Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

Writing an essay on how you spent your summer vacation is a classic way of starting a new school year. Think about this essay as an opportunity to tell a story about your summer while reflecting on the experiences you had. Choose a memorable moment you had this summer and start crafting your essay, giving as many details as possible.

Choosing a Topic

• These can also make nice visual aids if you are asked to present your essay.

• A list might be full of things like babysitting, attending a camp, working at a local store, taking a road trip, etc. This type of brainstorming can help you pick major events and other important moments from your summer.

• For example, maybe you spent your summer traveling around Japan. Think of a memorable moment you had while traveling — maybe you walked up a mountain in the pouring rain — and write about this moment, adding lots of details.

• For example, if you're writing about spending time at the beach, your outline could remind you to talk about the sandcastle building contest you entered, the dolphins you saw, and the ice cream you ate every day.
• Details might be what the other sandcastles looked like, how far away the dolphins were, and what kind of toppings were on your ice cream.
• Your outline is just to help you organize your thoughts — it can be written by hand or typed.

Crafting the Essay

• Instead of saying that you worked in a pet store, ate a PB&J sandwich, and walked home every day, talk about more than just your actions. You could talk about which pets are your favorites to work with, how it felt to eat the same sandwich every day, or what you thought about on your walk home.

• Using sensory details like these will help your readers visualize and engage with your writing. These help your audience make your experiences feel real to them, even though they weren't there.

• For example, instead of saying “I went to the beach this summer,” try saying “I spent my summer swimming in the frigid water at Virginia Beach.” The more details you can provide, the more engaged your reader will be.

• Instead of saying “the burger was really good,” you could say, “the burger was juicy and filling.”

• Don't just rely on spellcheck. It will help catch some errors, but it will miss some things, too.
• Ask a parent or other adult to read over your essay too, if you'd like.
• Setting your essay aside for a little while will give you a fresher perspective when you go back to revise it.

Structuring Your Essay

• Make sure your conclusion doesn’t just copy the introduction.

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

• The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
• The rising action (the beginning of your story)
• The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
• The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

How to Write a Summer Vacation Essay

Summer break is a great time to kick back, relax and enjoy yourself and, if you’re lucky, to go on an awesome trip! But how can you translate your amazing vacation into a narrative essay for English class or work it to fit a common application prompt? Here’s some tips to help you out:

Save Mementos From Your Summer

Even if you’re not the sentimental type, make sure to document your summer travels. Take pictures, write diary entries, save train stubs. This is the best way to ensure that you’ll remember your summer well enough to look back and write about it later.

Write an Outline Before Writing Your Essay

Regardless of whether you spent your summer break in Madison, Wisconsin or Madrid, Spain, you should plan out what you’re going to write before diving in. Make a list of what you’ve done over the summer so that you can later narrow down a focus for the essay itself. Keep in mind that the best essay topics aren’t always on the most exciting activities an essay about getting stuck in traffic on the way to the airport on the way to Denver could work better than an essay on hiking the Grand Canyon and looking out at the incredible view.

Be Specific

Since you’re going to keep a record of your trip and come up with an outline before writing your essay, you should be able to put some detail into your essay. Be as specific as possible when it comes to your word choice. If you’re talking about some gelato that you ate in Italy, don’t say that it was “delicious.” Instead, say that it was “creamy and chocolatey, with a note of vanilla.”

Focus on Feelings About Your Trip, Not What You Did

If you spent the summer on the beach in Cape Cod, you shouldn’t write about what you did. You should write instead about how you felt while there. An essay that reads “I went to beach, then had lobster for dinner” is not quite as exciting as one that goes, “As I went for a walk on the beach, I thought about how lucky I was to be able to enjoy nature.” Feelings translate better into text than events, and you should try to place those feelings into context.

Stick to Writing About a Small Moment

With any essay you write especially a short one it’s important to focus a narrow moment in time. Don’t write about your entire week in Paris. Instead, write about the moment you got lost in the city at midnight and fumbled your way home in the dark. You don’t have to pick a particularly glamorous moment from your trip, but you should pick one that meant something to you.

Edit Your Essay Carefully

The shorter the essay, the more important precision is. Regardless of length, make sure to carefully read over what you’ve written to make sure every sentence conveys the message you most want displayed. The editing process matters just as much as the writing process, even if it seems less so.

• You could also pay a much lower nightly rate by visiting during the offseason or shoulder season.
• If you're flexible about where you travel, choose an affordable destination where hotels don't cost as much.

Staying at a five-star hotel can make for an amazing travel experience. These hotels tend to have the best rooms, plenty of on-site amenities, and a higher level of service than you'd get elsewhere.

They also cost much more. When you're trying to travel without spending an arm and a leg, a budget-friendly hotel could seem like the best option. However, there are also ways to make the five-star experience much more affordable, including travel rewards cards and several other strategies frequent travelers use.

1. Open a hotel credit card

• You'll earn points in the hotel's loyalty program every time you pay with its credit card.
• Hotel credit cards usually have sign-up bonuses for new cardholders. Depending on the card, you could earn over 100,000 bonus points.
• Several hotel cards offer annual free night certificates. There may be restrictions on where you can use them, but some cards have free night certificates that can be used at five-star hotels.

Hotel credit cards are my favorite way to save when staying at high-end properties. Last month, I saved over $2,500 at a five-star hotel on the beach thanks to a free night certificate and my hotel points. If you want to book hotel stays for less, and even for free, I'd highly recommend getting a hotel card.

2. Visit during the offseason or shoulder season

Just about every destination has a peak season, which is its most busy period, and an offseason. In between those, there's the shoulder season.

You might be surprised just how much of a price difference this makes. For example, some five-star hotels in the south of France cost $500 to $600 per night during the peak season (July and August). By the shoulder season in September, many of those same hotels are charging about $400. And in the winter offseason, rates are under $300.

I realize most people don't want to visit the beach in winter. But when possible, try to schedule your trips for the offseason or shoulder season. It can make your hotel stay much more affordable.

3. Try a flexible date search

Hotel websites and online travel agencies normally have a flexible date search option. Instead of looking for exact travel dates, you provide a month and how many days you want to stay. For example, you could search for four nights in October.

You can then select a hotel and see its nightly rates that entire month. If you're open about when you visit, this is a good way to check when prices are high and when you can snag a deal.

4. Set up a travel savings fund

People who love traveling, and who want to do it without going into debt, are proactive about it. They save money for travel, whether they have a trip planned or not. When they need to book airfare or an expensive hotel, they already know how much they can spend and where the money's coming from.

If you want to stay at nicer hotels, make that one of your money goals. Start a travel fund in your savings account. Many savings accounts let you create sub-accounts or savings buckets for specific goals. Once you've made your travel fund, send money to it every month. If you put in $250 per month, that's $3,000 each year you can use for travel.

5. Pick an affordable destination

Being flexible about where you travel is another way to save on the five-star experience. Luxury hotels in expensive destinations may be out of your budget, but there are plenty of more affordable places to go.

For example, Latin America has become a popular budget travel destination for travelers from the United States. In Europe, travelers have raved that Poland and Portugal offer excellent value. You could also consider cheaper alternatives to the big tourist destinations, such as Bordeaux instead of Paris, or Valencia instead of Barcelona.

This jewel-toned maxi-dress caught my eye, too. With its subtle scalloped detailing and 100 percent cotton construction, the dress is tempting me a bit too much.

There’s also this fruit-speckled midi-dress that has a boxy cut-out back. (Just note: It’s even cheaper on Farm Rio’s website in some sizes.)

This pair of Vans is one of the best items I found hidden in the treasure trove that is Ban.do’s warehouse sale. Ben Van Leeuwen calls them a “cross between Vans and a big, bulky shoe” and says he can easily walk ten miles in them.

When the Best Possible Story is Right Outside Your Door

It was supposed to be easy: Teaching travel writing. After all, I’d been teaching for more than a decade, with essays picked for Best American Travel Writing , a decently regarded book of essays about the Middle East, and even a New York Times Magazine piece about the time I walked from New York to New Orleans. I’d been to Yemen, had a favorite restaurant in Baghdad, and could tell you the best place to eat North Korean food in Riyadh.

But in ten years at UCLA, I had mostly been teaching outside my expertise—a composition class about Los Angeles, a creative writing class for pre-meds, and a general journalism course for English majors—and what a strange feeling it was to at last preach the genre I supposedly knew best. I was scared.

Sometimes you get what you want and it’s harder than what you didn’t. Then protests came to my campus—the same quarter I was teaching travel writing—and suddenly the most interesting story was located, in fact, about 100 feet from the classroom. Would I be able to get students excited about the idea of going somewhere? (I myself rarely went anywhere.) What would it feel like to teach about travel when the best advice I could give was to go nowhere and stand up for something?

I left Miami in 1997 to attend college in California and when I was 19 I hitchhiked to Alaska and worked on a fishing boat and then in a cannery and then I transferred to a college back east and almost immediately dropped out to work at a newspaper in Cambodia. There I met the woman I’d marry and we moved to Indonesia and started dabbling in Russia and the former Soviet Union.

In 2008 we moved to Saudi Arabia, two of the first American journalists to be based there. We had a child and my wife was offered an exciting job—in Baghdad. Plenty of families lived in that city of 10 million. Instead, the child and I moved to Istanbul and we’d all meet up in Kurdistan or Beirut, which we soon made home, just in time for some of the most dangerous and violent years of unrest in neighboring Syria.

Those years, my wife put on battle gear and snuck over the border while I changed diapers and wrote essays—about going to Sanaa with a tiny baby, who got German measles, probably from children in the old city who tried to share food. Or that time we rented a house on an island in Turkey but my wife kept fighting with her editor and the seagulls never stopped screaming. Or a Christmas in Kurdistan, featuring the most grim and insane Chinese food of my life. There were a lot of protests.

Then in 2013 we moved to Los Angeles and I tried to write more of what I guess you could call travel essays: About taking the bus to my book launch in Los Feliz and walking the length of the South Bay bike path and a trip to Joshua Tree to think about the legacy of Edward Abbey. Gradually, my desire to write this kind of essay dried up as my life became less mobile. Instead I raised a kid and learned how to surf and got good at teaching classes that had little to do with the person I’d once been and the places I’d once called home. I wrote about opera for The Paris Review and about parenting for The Los Angeles Times and I also reviewed a lot of books. I gradually became someone else, somewhere else.

Suddenly it was the spring of 2024, and I was entering a classroom in LA that I’d lectured from for years, except this time I came bearing the brand new syllabus for a class I’d written and designed and conjured into existence: English 131E: “Travel Writing.”

The plan was to read David Foster Wallace on the fair and the ship but also Agnes Callard’s essay about why travel sucks. We’d consider how queer African-American writers like Bryan Washington, obsessed with Japan, could reorient which stories we were telling and why and how Crying in H Mart was helping a new generation of young writers look in the mirror and care about their experience too. You could just go to the grocery store and write a beautiful essay. I could just walk into a room and try to teach students how to write about travel.

Then it was mid-way through the course. Not bad! Students had written half a dozen short essays, a midterm, and they were gearing up to take a “field trip” to write a much longer essay. One student was driving up to the Central Valley to find a songwriting community around the migrant experience. Another had trekked up a mountain in Utah, hoping to escape an ex-fiancee. A third was going to take Ubers at night and chat up garrulous drivers.

Then something pretty remarkable happened: A bunch of UCLA students (some of them my own) started gathering in giant numbers on the main quad. Walking past the encampment on that fateful Tuesday afternoon, I carried my satchel—stuffed with stories about adventures far and wide—and when I ran into a colleague I could barely hear him over the hovering helicopters. I took a final look before heading home, not knowing of course how bad it would get that night but sensing something foreboding.

Moodily, I stood there, listening to the murmur of teens and young people in their early 20s—not unlike gatherings I’d seen or knew about from my time in the Middle East—and my mind went dark, to the concussion of an explosion, bad guys with guns, the scream of sirens. It’s hard to care. It’s easy to get hurt.

Overnight, the worst things did happen. Well, not the worst, but it was astonishing to believe something so bad could happen right there, on my own campus. (The California Highway Patrol recently confirmed firing into the crowd nearly 60 projectiles, including “33 beanbag rounds from 12-gauge shotguns and two dozen 40-millimeter ‘direct impact’ rounds from pistols and shotguns,” a report said.)

That sad next day, and in the days to come, in the wake of a despicable and avoidable tragedy on its own campus, UCLA administrators sent a panicked official memorandum to the faculty. I monitored Twitter. I fielded emails from students, many of whom were shaken up. Then I got concerned emails from friends far away. Finally another note arrived from UCLA, this time telling us all classes were moving online indefinitely.

What a strange time to be teaching! What was my role here? Nothing felt right. Predictably, students started writing essays about what had transpired. Many of them were strident, predictable. I struggled to explain how to take this titanic event and turn it into a good story.

Then I got a good one. And in reading that student essay I realized something new that is actually maybe something basic—something I’d even baked into my own syllabus, even if I’d forgotten about it.

The very good piece started in Orange County, during an early morning grocery run with the student’s father, in the wake of the protests on campus and the arrests and the violence. The student of mine wasn’t speaking to her dad, she wrote, because he was still mad she had risked her life by joining the protest. She, meanwhile, was mad at her dad that he couldn’t see why she’d joined, and so she refused to talk to him.

They angrily stalked the aisles of an empty grocery store in a wealthy Los Angeles suburb, filling a cart, still not understanding each other. What would give? At the cashier, stonily putting stuff on the checkout counter, they startled when an employee noticed the student’s college sweatshirt.

“You go to UCLA, huh? I’ve been hearing about those riots all week. You weren’t at those protests, were you?”

Such tension! The student writes about looking at her dad, then at her sweatshirt, and then back at the cashier. “No,” she says innocently enough, “I wasn’t there. It’s all pretty scary, though.”

This was not true. She had been there. It was scary. But whereas all my other students tended to write at length about that awful night, and to emphasize the days leading up to it, and the days after, attempting to say so much, this student barely wrote at all about the suffocating feeling of being pushed, “White bodies to the frontlines,” or the bricks flying, or the taste of bear spray, or the cops firing weapons at her face, or how very scared she really was. (I mean she wrote about all that but with effective restraint.)

What stands out to me is how she wrote about lying to the cashier, the way she looked at her dad, who started to laugh and then she wrote about how she started to laugh herself.

On the way back to the car, she wrote, her life seemed to be opening back up.

It’s been a couple months now. I guess I knew part of me would enjoy standing in front of a bunch of 20-year-olds, telling them the action was in a faraway place. I knew my syllabus was designed to make that idea more complicated. But I also knew I hadn’t done much traveling myself lately.

It’s probably a good time to point out that this writer I’m so impressed with wasn’t even in my travel class. She’s a premed, taking the other class I taught this spring, which is called Medical Narratives, and is a kind of creative writing boot camp for future doctors.

Here’s the deal: Sometimes the best story is standing right in front of you. Sometimes it’s a future doctor with a light touch, sitting there in a classroom you’ve taken for granted. I guess what I’m saying is you can go to the grocery store, you can forgive your dad, and regardless of how hard or hopeless it seems, how much it might hurt, you can make just about anything in your life huge and beautiful and worthwhile.

Is a Disney Theme Park Vacation Still Worth the Price?

As Disney has raised the cost of tickets and hotel rooms at its theme parks, and added pricey, difficult-to-navigate tools, even its most loyal fans are asking themselves if they should rethink their vacations.

Earlier this year, Jake Williams, a filmmaker and content creator in Toronto, made his long-awaited return to one of his favorite places on earth: Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. After traveling to Disney World and Disneyland multiple times a year since childhood and becoming an annual pass holder as an adult, Mr. Williams hadn’t been to a Disney park since 2019.

“As someone who went all the time, it’s crazy to me that I hadn’t gone to a Disney park in that long,” he said in a phone interview. “It’s a special place. ”

Before his trip, Mr. Williams heard about some changes at Disney World, but he didn’t anticipate how different things would be, starting at the airport. Since his last visit, the company had gotten rid of the Magical Express, a free bus that for more than 15 years shuttled people from Orlando International Airport to their Disney resorts. Guests must now take a shuttle that costs between $23 and $30 per adult each way, depending on the time of year, use a ride share service or rent a car.

To Disney-goers, the end of the Magical Express speaks to a larger issue: The cost of being at the happiest place on earth is going up while the perks are going away. As the company has raised the price of tickets and hotel rooms, and added costly, difficult-to-navigate tools to book rides as replacements for previously free products, even its most loyal fans are asking themselves if it’s still worth it.

Mr. Williams said that a day in the Orlando parks and a one-night stay at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort cost a “jaw-dropping” $886.34 for two adults. He decided to calculate how much the same trip cost in 2017 — a year when he visited the park several times. The cost: $567.90. Even accounting for inflation, he was stunned.

“It’s hard to justify going to Orlando rather than, like, Iceland,” he said. “When you have a budget like this, you can go a lot of places and see and do a lot of things. You could even do a Disney cruise for less than that.”

Island travel holds a lot of appeal for families. Maybe it's the gorgeous ocean views and pristine beaches that lure us to the most idyllic U.S. islands. Maybe it's the laid-back coastal vibes that make them such a great family vacation idea . I have many fond memories of visiting Martha’s Vineyard, Amelia Island and Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island as a child. For my own little one, there’s something especially magical about taking a ferry to reach our destination.

Of course, not all island vacations in the U.S. need to be accessible by ferry to be charming, but the country's best islands for family vacations are typically surrounded by large bodies of water, which makes them feel remote and removed from the hustle and bustle of daily life. If you're dreaming of a passport-free island vacation with the kids, these are the U.S. islands that have a special appeal to families.

1. Whidbey Island, Washington

Just north of Seattle and easily accessible by ferry, Washington's Whidbey Island is one of the longest islands in the United States, stretching about 40 miles. Though there are several scenic towns on this island, my family's favorites are Langley and Coupeville, both of which offer easy access to kid-friendly activities like hiking, water sports, or a simple day at the beach.

In Langley, stay at the spacious Langley by the Sea rental home for spectacular waterfront views, a fenced backyard, a state-of-the-art kitchen for home-cooked meals, and a large family room perfect for reconnecting with the kids over a classic board game . A quick five-minute drive away, downtown Langley bustles with lively shops and eateries. Stop by Sea Biscuit Bakery for a grab-and-go breakfast and select from one of many house-made pastries and hot breakfast sandwiches. Family-friendly Penn Cove Brewing serves up tacos, sandwiches, and salads. Ultra House offers ramen and Asian fusion with a twist and offers a kids menu.

Situated off the Sunshine State's northern coast, Amelia Island is one of the most romantic getaways in Florida for couples , but it's also an especially great island for families. One of my family's favorites is the Judd Creek Trail , an easy 1-mile loop. Kayak and e-bike rentals are available on the island from Vashon Adventures , which offers tours and classes suitable for all ages.

If you’re interested in UFOs, visit the site of a purported UFO landing (commonly referred to as the Maury Island Incident) at the Vashon Municipal Airport. For something more terrestrial, plan a relaxing day looking for sand dollars and seashells at the beach. Visit a local llama farm (by appointment only) for a unique island vacation experience.

The variety of dining choices also make Vashon one of the best islands in the U.S. for families. From the moment you set foot off the plane, perpetual sunshine and sprawling mountains greet you.
