Activity: Perform a poem

year 6 creative writing task pdf

Read the poem, talk about what it means, and perform it to an audience.

5. Find story inspiration

You can find fun story ideas anywhere! Why not raid your kitchen cupboards or hunt through the attic to find lost treasures? Anything from an old hat to a telescope will do the trick. What could the object be used for? Who might be looking for it? What secrets could it hold? Suggest different genres such as mystery or science fiction and discuss how the item might be used in this kind of story.

Real-world facts can also be a great source of inspiration. For example, did you know a jumping flea can accelerate faster than a space rocket taking off into orbit? What crazy story can your child make out of this fact? Newspapers and news websites can be great for finding these sorts of ideas.

For more storytelling ideas, download our free Story idea generator  or our Character profile activity sheet .

6. Draw your ideas first

If your child isn’t sure where to start with a story or even a piece of non-fiction, it can sometimes be helpful to sketch out their ideas first. For instance, can they draw a picture of a dastardly villain or a brave hero? How about a scary woodland or an enchanted castle?

Your child might also find it useful to draw maps or diagrams. What are all the different areas of their fantasy landscape called? How is the baddie’s base organised?

Some children might enjoy taking this idea a step further and drawing their own comics. This is great practice – it stretches your child’s creativity, gets them thinking about plot, character, and dialogue, and is a big confidence boost once they’ve finished and have an amazing story to look back on.

What your child will learn

In Year 6 (age 10–11), your child will be aiming to build upon the goals and expectations they were first set in Year 5. They will be expected to:

  • Identifying the audience for and purpose of the writing
  • Noting and developing initial ideas, drawing on reading and research where necessary.
  • Selecting appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how such choices can change and enhance meaning
  • In narratives, describing settings, characters and atmosphere and integrating dialogue to convey character and advance the action
  • Using a wide range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs
  • Using further organisational and presentational devices to structure text and to guide the reader (for example, headings, bullet points , and underlining).
  • Assessing the effectiveness of their own and others’ writing
  • Proposing changes to vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to enhance effects and clarify meaning
  • Ensuring the consistent and correct use of tense throughout a piece of writing
  • Ensuring correct subject and verb agreement when using singular and plural , distinguishing between the language of speech and writing and choosing the appropriate register.
  • Proof-read for spelling and punctuation errors.

Handwriting, spelling, grammar, and punctuation are all important aspects of writing too. You can find out more about them on our dedicated pages:

All children in Year 6 take a KS2 Writing Assessment as part of their KS2 SATs .

The test itself is not a formal, timed exam but is instead a 'teacher assessment' that's written and marked by your child's school around the KS2 Writing Framework.

Here you will find all available past KS2 SATs Writing assessments, published prior to the switch to teacher assessments in 2013 . This includes Level 6 tests materials together with the sample tests for Year 3 , Year 4 and Year 5 published in 2003 and 2006.

These tests may seem quite old (indeed they are from the former national curriculum) but they remain useful for practise at home or inspiration for teachers to use in the classroom.

Do you have enough independent Year 6 writing tasks to assess your pupils against the writing Teacher Assessment Framework for the end of Key Stage 2?

Plazoom has created a selection of Year 6 writing tasks linked to the foundation subjects. These provide opportunities for cross-curricular and creative writing in KS2 .

Object from the past

In this writing task, pupils will write a narrative about an object from the past. You could do this within a history topic, with pupils discovering an object from the period that you are studying. They will need some knowledge of the time period and the artefacts that have been left behind.

We’ve included a range of images showing artefacts from a range of periods studied in the KS2 history curriculum. This is so that pupils can choose an artefact or period of history that they are particularly interested in. They’ll need to draw on knowledge learnt from previous topics.

You can use this activity within a history lesson. It provides an opportunity for cross-curricular writing where pupils can show their understanding of a period from history. This also allows pupils to demonstrate their writing skills independently.

Alternatively, you could use it to inspire pupils to write an engaging narrative to provide a further example of independent writing evidence.

This resource pack includes:

  • Personal writing skills checklist : For pupils to write their own writing checklists to encourage independent editing.
  • Narrative writing skills checklist : A list of features, without modelled examples, for pupils to use as a checklist for editing writing.
  • Features of a Finding Tale poster : A poster for display outlining the structure of a finding tale to help pupils with planning.
  • Year 6 Punctuation Poster : A PDF poster showing punctuation marks, with examples, that we expect pupils in Year 6 to use in their writing.
  • ‘A Discovery From The Past’ story start: An engaging start for pupils’ narratives to inspire fantastic writing.
  • Historical artefacts image cards : A collection of images to inspire creative writing.
  • Narrative planning sheet : To support pupils when planning and organising their ideas.
  • Themed writing paper : A PDF writing sheet for pupils to use when writing their final draft, which includes the story start for ‘A Discovery From The Past’.
  • Teacher assessment sheet : For teachers to use to assess pupils against the year 6 writing TAF statements. You can place these in pupils’ books as a record of evidence seen.

End of KS2 TAF Statements the writing could provide evidence for

  • To use paragraphs to organise ideas.
  • To describe settings and characters.
  • To use capital letters, full stops, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contraction mostly correctly.
  • To describe settings, characters and atmosphere in narratives.
  • To use a range of punctuation taught at KS2 mostly correctly.
  • To select vocabulary …. that reflects what the writing requires, doing so mostly appropriately.
  • To use the range of punctuation taught at KS2 correctly and, when necessary, use such punctuation precisely to enhance meaning and avoid ambiguity.
