The aim of this highly interdisciplinary PhD program of systems biological researchers of the University of Zurich and ETH in Zurich and Basel is to train students from various disciplines and departments including Computer Science and (Bio)Informatics, Biological Sciences, and Engineering to become future leaders in Systems Biology.

Systems Biology aims at the quantitative analysis and predictive mathematical modeling at all levels of biological organization. The PhD program “Systems Biology” provides students with the generic skills for working in this new scientific field as well as training in project-specific (biological and/or computational) aspects of their PhD work.

Harvard was one of the first institutions to offer a program to explore this exciting new field. The program’s core curriculum includes courses on the methods and logic that shape research, how to conceptualize and present research, and an introduction to the faculty’s research.

The program has 48 faculty located in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Medical School, and Harvard-affiliated teaching hospitals including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Mass General, and Boston Children’s Hospital. SSQB is one of 14 PhD programs in the Harvard Integrated Life Sciences program that collectively gives you access to over 900 faculty research groups situated in the heart of Boston’s biotech hub. Our students are working on projects that range from fundamental problems in biology to translational research, whose goal is to directly affect medicine and global sustainability.

Graduates of the program have gone on to faculty positions at prestigious institutions such as MIT and Princeton University, while others are now industry leaders as startup founders or as decision makers at companies including Boston Consulting Group, Yumanity Therapeutics, McKinsey & Company, and Regeneron.

Academic Background

Applicants typically have a background in biology, physics, chemistry, computer science, engineering, or mathematics and work to forge a new approach to biology that combines theoretical and experimental approaches. The typical student has a strong background in one of the disciplines relevant to systems biology and an interest in interdisciplinary research.

Welcome to the MIT Computational and Systems Biology PhD Program (CSB)

The Ph.D. program seeks to train a new breed of quantitative biologists who can take advantage of technologies at the leading edge of science and engineering to tackle fundamental and applied problems in biology. Our students acquire: (i) a background in modern molecular/cell biology; (ii) a foundation in quantitative/engineering disciplines to enable them to create new technologies as well as apply existing methods; and (iii) exposure to subjects emphasizing the application of quantitative approaches to biological problems.  Our program and courses emphasize the logic of scientific discovery rather than mastering a specific set of skills or facts.  The program includes teaching experience during one semester of the second year.  It prepares students with the tools needed to succeed in a variety of academic and non-academic careers.

The program is highly selective with typical class sizes 8 to 10 students. About half of our graduate students are women, about one-quarter are international students, and about 10% are under-represented minorities.

Students complete most coursework during the first year, while exploring research opportunities through 1- or 2-month research rotations.  A faculty academic advisor assigned in the first year provides guidance and advice. Students choose a research advisor in spring or early summer of year 1 and develop a Ph.D. research project in with their advisor and input from a thesis committee chosen by the student.

Average time to graduation is 5½ years.

PhD position in Systems Biology of Microbial Communities

How do interactions networks set the properties of microbial communities?

Microbes usually live together in large communities. These complex communities are shaped by the interactions between the microbes, and a community can be understood as a network of interacting species. The interactions determine which bacteria can survive in the community, and thus how the overall community forms and functions. However, how the interaction networks set the properties of microbial communities is generally unclear. We have an open PhD position to explore microbial interaction networks. The position is fully funded for 3 years by a grant from the DFG and should be filled as soon as possible. Salary is paid according to TV-L, E13 (65%). An initial one-year contract will be provided, with the expectation of an extension.

Data is the new resource of the 21st century, and its availability seems boundless. If you`re passionate about contributing to the establishment of a crucial segment in the data relationship life cycle for plant science, we invite you to join the Omics-/Database-based Bioinformatics division (IBG-4) at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences at Forschungszentrum Jülich. IBG-4, led by Prof. Dr. Usadel, specializes in data integration, classical bioinformatics, Data Science, and machine learning. The research group, "Sequence-based Bioinformatics," is dedicated to analyzing plant genomes to assess their potential use in breeding strategies.

• Analysis and integration of diverse biological data from the field of plant sciences (large scale genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic and/or single cell data) using cutting-edge technologies e.g. Artificial Intelligence (AI)
• Development of novel tools and algorithms in the area of omics data analysis and integration
• Publications in international journals and travel to international conferences
• (Co)supervision of Bachelor and Master students

Your Profile:

• Master in bioinformatics, biology or similar with experience in the relevant field
• Knowledge in programming languages (e.g. Java, Rust, C/C++) and statistical analysis using R/BioConductor/python
• Experience with the analysis and integration (data fusion) of high throughput data such as NGS, single cell data, metabolite profiling and/or plant phenotyping data
• Experience with the application of AI for data analysis and interpretation is advantageous
• Experience with plant omics data is a plus
• Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently
• Very good cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a distributed team in an international and interdisciplinary environment
• Excellent communication skills in English are mandatory

The position is initially for a fixed term of 3 years. Pay in line with 65% of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) and additionally 60 % of a monthly salary as special payment („Christmas bonus“). Pay higher than the basic pay may be possible.
