Carrying out a research paper is concerned to be a simple task. However, in practice it is far more complicated. The most important factor is for the researcher to know the main principles of the research process. It is vital to identify the research methods progression, the meaning and purpose of the research to be carried out, by the formulation of hypothesis, aims and questions, the use of methodology-both quantitative and qualitative-their characteristics and suitability when utilized, and the need of sampling and ethical considerations. By the use of theoretical framework, the current research paper firstly discusses and analyses the principles of bringing about a research paper, and most importantly it emphasizes the advantages and disadvantages of research methodology.

Research has an ingrained role in generating understanding and insights through studying a particular phenomenon. Yet, the research process is characterized by various challenges that have the potential of creating confusion for researchers especially during their first encounter with the research process. According to Crotty (1998), research students, even experienced ones, are often overwhelmed during the research process due to the numerous and varying methodologies and methods that they are required to adapt to or choose from. In most cases, these methods and methodologies are not organized, and occur as a maze rather than a clear pathway to logical and orderly research. To complicate the situation further, key research terminology is not consistent in most research literature and texts. In this regard, it is important for researchers to understand why there are such variations and inconsistencies in the field of social research, and that they can overcome these challenges in order to undertake successful research projects. In this paper, I will present my Interpretivist theoretical position among the research philosophies of science through exploring the various schools of thought and giving examples for such paradigms. Prior to this presentation, I will conduct a short historical background on the development of science, followed by a brief presentation of the major

The objective of this study is to provide a guide to qualitative research methodology in social sciences. It is the result of the observation that research in Management Sciences in most Universities in Cameroon is still dominated by the quantitative approach supported by economists who handle most research methodology courses. In an environment of oral tradition and the difficulties to have access to data, emphasising purely quantitative research may leave aside many aspects of the environment and several areas of human behaviour that make its specificities. Therefore, there is a need to generalise the use of qualitative research to enable researchers to always have a good insight into phenomena not yet clarified before thinking of any generalisation which is the main objective of quantitative research: this gives room to the contextualisation of research which results can easily be applied in its context, thus, enhancing development.

To accumulate a body of knowledge which can inform and improve socio-economic and political human existence requires evidence-based approaches, as such, conducting scientific researches is usually carried out to find solutions to a prevailing phenomenon; therefore, extracting and accumulating such a scientific knowledge and/or information is a crucial process. In this endeavour, researchers usually deploy various scientific approaches and methods; methods which are mostly informed by ontological and epistemological underpinnings. In discussing quantitative and qualitative research approaches and drawing distinction between the two approaches this paper will explain the three major dimensions considered critical in research process

Social Research Methods: Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches

  • Mr. Ahmadin Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM), Indonesia

In social research there are two methods that are often used, namely a qualitative approach which is built on the foundation of the philosophy of phenomenology and a quantitative approach which refers to the philosophy of positivism. The two adherents of this approach sometimes criticize each other, especially regarding their effectiveness and reliability in presenting data related to social problems. This paper examines the two not in opposite positions, but reveals the characteristics of each and the possibility of using these two approaches simultaneously in research activities. A certain theory, including the study approach, is not always in accordance with the social problems studied, so that these two approaches, namely qualitative and quantitative, are the choices to be used. This paper also discusses about humans and their problems, what are social problems, research and its objectives, and the steps of research.
