How to Write 5000 Words a Day: 3 Irrefutable Rules

November 14, 2012 by Farnoosh Brock

The Apple Friendly Writing Desk with Thunderbolt Mac

I am not doing NaNoWriMo , the brilliant writing challenge of November in which thousands partake. I should be though. But this November, I am writing 5000 words a day into my own non-fiction ‘novel’.

I am writing my next book and digital product, How to Crack the Code to Get Promoted (at your corporate job) and apparently, I have a lot to say on this topic. Lucky you, if you want the little-known secrets that no employer tells you but badly wishes you knew so you stop making the obvious mistakes and start closing the gap between what you need to do and what you think you need to do to get that darn promotion and move up the ladder already, but I digress.

This blog post is about writing. It is about writing with the kind of consistency that makes the prolific Stephen King go “Hey! Not bad at all!” although I am sure Mr. King would be far more eloquent but you know what I mean.

This blog post is about ditching your own excuses, getting out of your own way, and start writing. Write your overdue novel, your project plan, your 2013 goals in excruciating detail, your first book or fourth, your blog posts, your magazine article submissions, your newsletter, your proposals, your research paper, your journal publication, whatever it is you need to write. Writing is the essence of all wealth and knowledge and it is the most therapeutic way to get in touch with your soul. Writing is the basis of your life’s work.

How else are you documenting your thoughts, your dreams, your plans, your gifts, if you are not writing them?

Well, I could go on about why writing is essential to your very survival as a professional in any field, but you can read On Writing or a million other books and articles on that. I want to talk about how to get in the habit of writing 5000 words a day. Even if you don’t call yourself a writer.

If you feel yourself building a wall of resistance as you read those words, welcome to the Writing Resistance Syndrome club: You Are Not Alone! You probably have at least a dozen excuses on the tip of your tongue as to why 5k words a day is a ludicrous thing to attempt, even if you are convinced about the power and the benefits of writing. You have responsibilities. You have to take care of kids and dogs and cats and your house. You have a job. You have to make dinner or watch an episode of something important. You have to browse Facebook and check Twitter.

I know. And just because I don’t have kids or dogs (and boy am I dying to get a pooch but must hold off) or a job that wastes my time (not anymore, thank God), doesn’t mean I use every hour of my day productively. I admit, I don’t. I waste time as brilliantly as you, and no matter how many times I beat myself up for it, I continue to waste time. And this is why I am shocked and thrilled that I have discovered a way to write 5000 words a day nonetheless, while I still manage to waste time, and I am about to tell you how you can do the same thing.

It’s a funny irony how high you tend to rank your own productivity in a vacuum.

You may believe that you will produce books upon books and a suite of products on top when you quit your job and go solo or when your child is off to daycare or college or when your husband leaves town or when the holidays are over or when … [fill in the blanks].

You create this amazingly productive robot in your mind’s eye and when those things come to be, when you are finally sitting at the keyboard in your favorite part of the house, all quiet and happy, you will still be itching to do something else after 10 minutes or 20 at most. You will still get up and get another cup of coffee, or get a snack, or use the restroom – again – or remember that you need to call about the car or the fridge or check on a friend or go see if the mail has come by yet. You will be at your most creative, thinking of everything else that you should do really quickly before you really start writing . And this is how most of that first quiet “perfect” day of writing will go for most of us.

On subsequent days, you may hate what you write and scratch it. You may start reading about ways to write more efficiently and get lost in the world wide web for a few hours, telling yourself that you are doing research and getting ready to write “seriously” and to produce “great content” very soon. And low and behold, when you have exhausted your search and are finally ready to write more, you are bound to get interrupted by something that I guarantee will seem more “urgent” than writing.

And so the days and the weeks will go by, your other distractions will weave themselves back into your life and writing will sadly take the same old dusty backseat of “someday” syndrome that it has always reserved, and you will brush it off by saying, “I’ll need to develop a great writing habit one of these days, as soon as I get such and such done and over with in my life.”

Sound familiar? Or is that just me?

So how then do you write 5000 words a day when your mind and every fiber of your body loves to resist writing?

Here’s some stuff you don’t have to worry about as much as you may think:

You don’t need to kill all your distractions. Not by a long shot. You don’t need to go into a cabin in the woods. You don’t need to cut off the internet. Are you crazy? You don’t need to have someone hide your iPhone in an undisclosed location.

But here are 3 irrefutable rules that you cannot break:

1. Do not interrupt the writing flow. You know that inner voice whence your writing originates, that sacred little place inside your mind, that faint voice that you hear when you start writing. When it’s in full motion, and when you are in the flow, do not interrupt it. Wait until it has finished its say and take a break before the next cycle begins. The more you hear this inner voice, the more you tune into it and the more you believe in it. And the more you will write. So take your breaks, indulge in your distractions, and take time off for dinner too, but do not do it when the writing voice is in its flow.

2. Do not give in to the myth of “writer’s block”. There’s no such thing. It’s a myth. It’s in your head. It doesn’t exist. So that inner voice I talked about, it can get weak, it can get tired, and it can make your writing difficult. But it’s not a block. If you don’t have anything to say on this topic, try another. If you write garbage, write anyway. If you can’t think of a single word, think harder, more creatively, less restrained, more open, because you have not exhausted your full brain power by any stretch of imagination, or take time to read – you must read a ton of books as a writer, I hope you know that one – or meditate or take a walk but please don’t go around saying “Oh I have writer’s block!” When you give this myth power, you will have destroyed your ability to write consistently.

3. Do not go to bed without writing your 5000 words. This rules gives you all the freedom in your day as long as you manage to get your 5k in! So if you want to watch your episode of …. (Sorry, I don’t even know what’s been playing in the last 10 years on American TV.) then do it, but you still have 5000 words to write. If you want to take care of everything else first then write, then so be it, or if you want to get up 2 hours earlier to write, then that’s fine too. But tell yourself that you will get in those 5k words in every single day, and don’t take no for an answer.

Since November 5th, I have written 41,700 words into Crack the Code to Get Promoted using only these irrefutable rules, plus daily Ashtanga practice and a great many walks with hubby, not to mention one too many hops over to Facebook . I started out with 3000 words a day and then bumped it up to 4k and then 5k+. How many words can you write in one day?

Writing is not easy, of course not, but who cares about easy? Easy is irrelevant. Easy is uninteresting. Easy is for losers because easy doesn’t get you far. You are a winner. Winners work. Winners crush it. Winners put their priorities to the test, winners don’t take no for an answer, winners are not fond of excuses, and winners do things their way but still win, and I bet you anything, winners write . A lot.

So start writing already. That book won’t write itself now, will it?

The Pomodoro Technique: How To Write 5,000 Words Every Day

by Ryan Casey | Jul 17, 2013 | Writing Advice | 33 comments

pomodoro

One of the most common questions I’m asked is how I manage to write so much whilst seemingly also having, y’know, a life.

Usually, I find this question quite funny, because I never really considered myself a prolific writer, not until recently, anyway. I used to write one-thousand to two-thousand words every day, which usually took me two or three hours. To me, that wasn’t really a lot. If anything, I felt guilty for not spending more time writing than I did.  ‘If I could spend five hours writing, I’d get five-thousand words written per day…’

But two things made me resist my target.

Firstly, it’s because I was doing what I was told by other writers too much.

Allow me to elaborate: every corner of the web you visit (bar a few. How many corners does the web have, actually?), you’ll find advice on what a ‘respectable’ amount of words per day is. I think the most common upper word limit, we can safely agree, is one-thousand words. For some reason, one-thousand words per day appears to be some sort of holy grail for writers. Anything higher, and the writer is either a.) rushing, or b.) writing crap.

By digesting all of this advice, we kind of start to believe it a little, which is what was highly frustrating to me. I was finishing my 1k per day in just over an hour and, because of the cauldron of rights and wrongs on the internet, actually felt a little  guilty  for writing any longer. I was, quite simply, a little bored.

The second reason I resisted my pursuit for 5k per day is because five solid hours at a desk sounds like a hell of a long time. There’s no way my creative juices could solidly run for that long, I believed.

I was wrong. Well, kind of.

I could give you a list of ‘this is what you should dos’, but I won’t because I think that when ingested, that kind of advice can be bad for your health. Instead, I just want to introduce you to a few productivity methods that can see you hitting the thousands  by lunchtime.

That’s right. A whole afternoon off to catch up on whatever crap’s on Netflix these days.

Bear in mind I’m talking about first draft words here. Not rewriting. That’s a different matter for another post. However, these techniques can be used everywhere. But anyway…

1.)  The Pomodoro Technique

You may or may not have heard of the Pomodoro Technique. I hadn’t up until a couple of weeks ago, but since I’ve started implementing it, my daily wordcount has doubled, and I feel refreshed and a sense of achievement because of it.

Basically, the Pomodoro Technique is this: you set a timer for twenty-five minutes and you do whatever task it is you want to do (in our case, writing). You work solidly on that task for twenty-five minutes, and then when the time is up, you take a five minute break, no matter what. Nip to the loo, refill your glass of water — Pomo’ don’t discriminate.

Then, you repeat the cycle again. After four full cycles, you take a longer break.

Can you see how beneficial this is to writing? I usually start writing somewhere around ten-thirty in the morning. I complete a few cycles and then take a lunch break. On a good day, I’ll have a couple thousand words written by the time I take lunch. On a great (read: early start) day, I’ll have hit 5k already.

The best thing about it is, because it breaks your work up into smaller chunks, you don’t feel as drained as you would do if you’d spent several solid hours. My productivity method used to be this: wait for the clock to hit the hour and then write until that hour is up. But it was a poor method, in hindsight — I regularly got distracted and my words per hour were nowhere near as high as I know they can be.

Another bonus? Maybe you do only have twenty-five minutes per day, but with the Pomodoro Technique, you can turn those twenty-five minutes into a goldmine of productivity. Do you have twenty-five minutes per day? Then you can finish a novel in eighty days. How’s that sound?

You can purchase various apps or visit websites for the Pomodoro Technique. I use an app called Focus Time . The official website is well worth visiting too. I mean, those little tomatoes look awesome, and I’d definitely have one if I wasn’t such a digital geek.

The Pomodoro Technique has helped me realise my potential. It really is as simple as that.

2.) White Noise

I used to write with no music, and then I went to university and realised I was kidding myself in thinking I’d get a moment of peace there. My experience of writing with music has always been hit and miss. Sometimes, it really suits the project (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ soundtrack work was perfect for my creepy novella,  The Painting ), but often, I just find myself distracted.

Enter: white noise. There isn’t really much exciting to say about white noise, to be honest, other than it’s great for blocking the outside world out. Now, I use it all the time, whether it’s quiet outside (it usually is — I live in the countryside nowadays) or not. It’s become a part of my productivity regime, and for that, I salute it.

I usually listen to this clip on my iPad. It’s free, and it’s pretty much endless, so it fits the bill.

3.) A Writing Tracker

I’m a sucker for keeping track of myself. I used to have so many of those days where I don’t feel like I’ve done as much as I actually have, so I realised I needed to create something to keep myself in check.

Now, I have a spreadsheet. I know, I know — I hate spreadsheets too, or at least I did. Now, I kind of love the things. All I have is columns for the date, hours written, word count for that session, and then two extra columns for the daily total hours and words.

It’s a great way of keeping track of things you might not  initially be aware of. For example, I used to be convinced I was a late night writer, but my 10pm to 10.25pm total was short of my earlier average. I was wrong about my own habits.

I’d really recommend setting up a spreadsheet as basic as mine. It’s heartening to see a novel’s wordcount grow, and provides you with plenty of motivation to continue.

4.) Freedom App

I’ve discussed Freedom in the past. Sick of being distracted by social media? Is researching your novel getting in the way of the actual writing of your novel? Then Freedom App could be for you.

Again, nothing overly exciting here: you key in a time and it blocks your internet for that number of time. The only way you can access the net is if you restart your computer, which for a lazy slob like me, isn’t worth the effort.

Freedom is available for Mac, and I believe there is a Windows version these days, too.

5.) A Folded Up Bolton Wanderers Ticket

‘Cause Apple’s Pages in full screen mode  still  doesn’t give the option to hide wordcount whilst writing, I have to do it that manual way. Damn them!

Yeah, I don’t like seeing my wordcount. If I’m checking my wordcount, I’m not focused. Don’t fall victim to the wordcount. Buy a Bolton Wanderers ticket. We could do with the extra fans.

* I hope you’ve enjoyed this post! An update on the fiction front: mailing list and Twitter followers will already be receiving details on the launch of my new novel,  Killing Freedom . I’ll be blogging about that tomorrow, but if you can’t wait…

http://www.twitter.com/RyanCaseyBooks — s’all on there. This rollout launch is part of a bigger strategy too. You’ll see! I hope.

Great points, Ryan. I think the key here is experimenting until you find what works for YOU, then go with it. Personally, I could never write with a timer going, that would make my anxiety levels go through the roof. LOL

Will, I couldn’t agree more! That’s why I’m always keen to say, ‘this is just ONE way of doing it’. I always find it somewhat discouraging when advice seems to suggest there’s only one way. Great tip.

As for the timer, my anxiety beats the hell out of me for twenty-five minutes, but it’s usually worth it at the end. 😉

“On a good day, I’ll have hit 5k already.”

Pfffft. You lazy sod. 😉

William Wallace Cook, who published at the turn of the last century, wrote two 33K stories a week over several months. The advice in his book “The Fiction Factory,” was adopted lock, stock and barrel by another writer, Erle Stanley Gardner, the creator of Perry Mason.

(You are correct, of course. I just came across a book on Gardner’s methods, “Secrets of the World’s Best-Selling Writer,” and had to share.)

Two 33K stories a week! Wow, I think I might have to challenge Cook some day. 😉

I’ll have to check out Gardner’s book — I’m always keen to check out new reference books.

Great tips, Ryan. I have a full-time day job, so sometimes finding time to write is tough. I generally come in a half-hour before work so I can do some writing. And I eat my lunch at my desk and write during that time. Of course, it’s hard not to be distracted by phone calls and emails when I’m on my lunch break but I still average about 1,200 words per day with this schedule.

I haven’t tried breaking it down into shorter increments of time. I’ll give that a shot and see how it works.

Thanks, Merrill. I absolutely know where you are coming from in balancing the day job with the writing time. It’s tough! I think the important thing (and something Pomodoro proves) is to try and find those half hour spots scattered throughout the day. They really do add up.

1,200 per day is great. That’s, what, a full first draft in less than two months? Good on you!

Best of luck breaking it into shorter increments. It works for me, hope you find the same success. Keep in touch with your results!

Call it synchronicity, but I just heard about the Pomodoro Technique–from my hubby, an IT guy, no less–a couple days ago. I thought about using it for my day job, but not for writing. I will have to try it.

I haven’t had much luck writing to music; I find it too distracting. I love writing outside, though. Since so many of my stories are inspired by nature, it makes sense to be surrounded by the great outdoors while I write. It provides a great soundtrack. Now you’ve got me thinking about having some nature sounds in the background on days when I have to write inside. 🙂

It’s a sign, Denise! The pomodoros are everywhere…

And yeah, nature sounds will no doubt be effective. I agree regarding music — sometimes it works for me, but more often than not, it just gets in the way. If I am to listen to music, it has to be soundtrack work.

You’ve provided some awesome tips here, Ryan. Writing style is one factor that determines how fast you can write. Since my style tends to be more literary, I write slower than most authors and sometimes envy the speed of a conversational style.

Glad I could help, Janalyn. I agree: writing style definitely influences pace. Regardless, I hope some of these tips come in handy for your writing too!

Ryan, I agree 100%. I’m very prolific, writing on average 12k per day when I’m working on new projects, and have long since set my worries about speed to the wayside.

When I trained to be a journalist, speed was essential, as was writing quickly as a screenwriter. So why do we think books are different? With proper planning, focus and organization (not to mention trust in your ability), speed is just another tool in a writer’s arsenal.

I, too, listen to white noise, though I do write in one hour bouts–they just seem to work best for me. The key, I think, is ignoring convention and finding what flows for you, as an individual, tweaking the process until it fits like a glove.

Best of luck in your work 😀

12k per day! That’s seriously impressive — great job.

Speed should definitely be considered a writing tool. Really, it’s absurd to think that the longer spent writing a first draft, the better a novel should be. If anything, a first draft will be much tighter in voice and tone when written over a shorter period of time!

One hour bouts are something I wish I could do, but I’m just too distractible. Glad it works for you, though. Good luck right back at you!

I’ve been slacking on my word count, going to use this tonight. I used to use a spreadsheet as well, may need to dust that off too. Thanks for the advice!

That’s the spirit — get that spreadsheet dusted off! It really can help. Best of luck. 🙂

Interesting! I’m going to have to try this, but the white noise would end up with something broken! I’m sharing with a friend who I think would greatly benefit from this from a health point of view! She forgets to eat while writing or editing and she’s always doing one or the other.

Ha, the white noise isn’t for everyone! I hope your friend enjoys the piece. Five minutes here and there (as well as longer half hour break after four pomodoro cycles) can really with organisation, eating, etc.

Hey Ryan, great post, I’ve been slipping productivity wise and dealing with the vicious guilt cycle that accompanies that! Im off to get freedom etc, about time I think. By the by, have you heard of Scrivener? It changed my life as a writer. Plus it creates its own epub versions as well. I would hands down say that it was the best 30 quid i ever spent.

Thanks, Kit! I have heard of Scrivener (I have a copy of it in my hard drive, in fact), and plan to start using it with my current WIP. It looks like something that will take a lot of time to get used to, but every writer I know who does use it say they wouldn’t even consider MS Word/Pages after using it. Looking forward to getting into it!

Its actually really quick to make the change! Promise. And oh the joy of not having to scroll through an entire document to find the part you need… Also, which you might like, with your tracking habits, it lets you track by wordcount, make a goal, like Nanowrimo. Let us know when you make the change!

Thank you! I will try the The Pomodoro Technique. I like Dr. Wicked’s Write or Die! I am aiming for 2,000 a day (to re-write & edit my novel). I love using bristol boards on my wall and cue/index cards – I like to have a bird’s eye view on things. I have been considering getting Writer’s Blocks software. I write more when I have less stress about organization. And thank you Kit for suggesting Scrivener, it looks interesting!

Cheers, Hannah — I’ll take a look at Write or Die. 2K per day is a great target, so definitely go for it. I don’t edit as I write, so you’re covering a fair bit of ground by doing that. And yes, thanks to Kit for suggesting Scrivener — good tip!

My hubby is on board and doubled his production that last week. Now he’s advocating I get on board. More later…

Ryan – thanks for sharing your ideas. The Pomodoro Technique sounds like an excellent writing tool. I might have to use a silent timer though. Anything that ticks would drive me to distraction! I wonder if there’s an app for that… I am restricted to evenings for my writing, but I will be trying this technique tonight. Forcing oneself to sit down for the next available hour-and-a-half is very offputting. But twenty-five to thirty minutes at a time? Definitely do-able.

I would recommend Scrivener to anyone who is considering it. Sure, the tutorial takes a little time, but that applies to learning anything new. And it walks you through the process, holding your hand all the way – not like an instruction manual at all.

I tried this last night, downloading a free countdown timer onto my desktop and setting it for 29 minutes. Instead of procrastinating, I got three bursts of writing / editing completed…almost 90 minutes of work! On two occasions, I just kept going because I didn’t want to stop. Thanks Ryan!

Brilliant! Delighted to hear it is working for you. It really is effective, right?

I felt fresher, less tied to the (hotel) desk and eager to get back to it. I had to force myself to walk around before I gave myself permission to continue. What a difference!

You have saved my life! A urgent project was dropped in my lap more or less out of nowhere. 30,000 words, four days. Thanks to your post (I’d never heard of the Pomodoro Technique before, either) I was able to write 10,000 words every day, in a workday’s time (so about 7 hours): that means free nights, which equals the chance to unwind and wake up refreshed for more writing in the morning. And, I had one extra day to review the whole thing! Thank you so much for posting this one!

Thanks for the tips! Got to write 15,000 words in 3 days! Hopefully will make it! Shall try your method. I don’t like the white noise though, somewhat irritating. I prefer nice music instead!

Hi eddy, Glad the advice works for you. I rarely hit 5k a day, but I know that with these methods I totally could.

Good luck going forward.

Great post! I used to get too distracted by music while writing, but I switched to Mozart and it’s been huge. The so-called Mozart Effect is controversial (i.e., the idea that listening to Mozart improves focus and turns you into a sort of genius), but I swear by it. At the very least, it’s trained me like a dog to write whenever I hear those notes.

Thank you for writing this! 🙂 I have been writing a good 2,000 words per night for my new novel & I recently had someone tell me that I was rushing things… it was not only jarring, but surprising that they thought they were an authority on how another writer should operate. I’d honestly be one to take advice from any writer who was typing up 5,000 words per day. Good work! I’m happy I found this post. ;D

Nice advice, Ryan. I do all of those things and can testify to their effectiveness. Actually I don’t do the Bolton Wanderers one. Would a West Ham ticket suffice?

I find it funny that while writing a book which will mention BW FC. I have gotten here. Small world.

How To Write 5,000 Words a Day, Everyday

Flexible routine, smart breaks, and kill two birds with one stone..

can you write a 5000 word essay in one day

I started Nanowrimo on 1 November and have been largely keeping up with the word count (screenshot taken as of 22nd November 2023). Although I have to admit that I don’t update it every day, I missed out on a few streaks. I write, on average, 1,985 words of my novel a day, but that’s just part of what I write. Plus the other novelette I am working on and blog posts like this, I manage around 5,000 words a day.

I count it as part of the 5,000 words as long as it’s creative (i.e. not emails).

How do I do it, you might ask. Here are my tricks (and doable even if you have a full-time job).

To receive new posts beginner writing tips and support Priscilla’s work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Tip 1: Write only when you’re inspired

Most writers stare at the blank screen, and nothing comes out. It is normal. However, You don’t necessarily have to hunch over your laptop all the time. Finding ways to get inspired is part of the writing process.

My first tip to write 5,000 a day, every day, is to create a lot of moments of inspiration. Avoid watching TV or doom-scrolling social media by getting yourself out for a walk, visiting exhibitions, or people-watching in a cafe. Many great characters and scenes come from observing mundane people’s lives.

Make sure you bring a notebook and a pen , so you can write down your ideas. It's even better if you grab your laptop on the go and write on the spot when you’re inspired.

Tip 2: Flexible routine - not timed

We tend to underestimate how much we can accomplish in those ‘spare moments’ in our everyday lives: when queuing for coffee, commuting, or waiting for a friend. T hese spare moments are the times to get writing, especially if you have a full-time job that’s not writing.

Count those sessions as a writing session - think of it like a boot camp.

Then, track that word count as well. I do enjoy using Nanowrimo as a word count calculator; you can sign up for free, and you can have multiple projects running at the same time. So every time you finish writing, even if it’s only 100 words, log it.

I have talked about not having a fixed and timed routine before. Because let’s be realistic, it’s a privilege not to be disturbed halfway through a thing in this day and age. Especially if you have kids, what kind of morning routine do you REALLY have? And your work email?

Think sessions, log progress, not fixed and timed calendar blocks.

Tip 3: Put your phone away

When you have a moment to write undisturbed, create an environment in which you are truly alone with your work . If that means sneaking to the library, turning your phone off, or hiding in a cave, do it.

I like to have a timer with me - the timer is not for timing how much time I spend on writing but to remind myself not to get distracted and walk away from the task at hand.

It takes me around 40 minutes to write about 2,000 words. To be absolutely clear, this is very fast. But if you follow tip 1, then when you write, you already know what you are writing, and you are inspired. Train your writing muscle ( see our tutorial here ) from the ground up, and you will be much more attuned to writing.

I managed to stay very focused during those 40 minutes because 1. I am inspired, 2. I lock my phone under my bed, and 3. I use a timer. If you want to see how I do it, then follow the video below with a minute-by-minute (!) of how I get to 5,900 words during a day. You can write along with me in this video as it has timers too.

Tip 4: Smart breaks

There are no true breaks as a writer. I think about my stories around the clock - when I am in the shower or when I am napping, and definitely when I am moving my eyes away from the screen.

As I mentioned in Tip 1 - I break to get inspired. I am always walking during my break , and I kill two birds with one stone by adding to my walk one of these three things:

I walk, and I listen to a Podcast : I only listen to two Podcasts: The New Yorker: Fiction and Planet Money . Quality is a must when you are taking smart breaks.

I walk, and I listen to an audiobook : Leave me alone if you don’t think of listening to an audiobook as reading. A good narrator brings out the flavour of a great book. I am lucky to have come across a few. In particular, Yiyun Li’s Book of Goose, narrated by Caroline Hewitt , was fascinating. This book begins my audiobook journey, and I can’t recommend this enough.

I walk, and I eavesdrop : One of my favourite things to do is go to an exhibition and eavesdrop on people’s conversations. You can do it anywhere, but I like exhibitions cause of the stuff people make up as they look at a painting(!). It’s a trick I learned from short-story writer Vanessa Onwuemezi. There is no better dialogue research than real meaningless dialogues like those in an exhibition to show off one’s character . So many subtexts.

So what are you waiting for? You don’t need to write 5,000 words a day. The purpose of this is to help you see the opportunities you might have missed that would keep your writing mind engaged throughout the day and get that story in your head onto paper.

Good luck with writing.

How to Write 5,000 Words a Day

How to Write 5000 Words a Day

Writing and creative work is hard.

Sometimes you sit there, pumped up and ready to get to it… and nothing happens.

Pen does not meet paper. Words do not appear.

And after what seems like a small eternity, when you finally start to write… it’s gibberish. Garbage. Unusable.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

What if there was a way — a system — where you could consistently produce quality output, day, after day, after day?

Well, there is.

And I’m going to give it to you right now.

This is the exact system that I’ve used over the past year to publish two long-form articles every week, without fail.

On my best days I write 5,000 words. On my worst days, at least 1,000 words.

And the great thing about this is that it’s a system. This means that anyone can do it, and that you can always fall back on the principles of the system to help get your writing done.

No matter if you write for yourself, on Medium or anywhere else, you can use the same system to consistently produce quality output.

Most articles about writing discuss how to improve expression or how to get more views for your articles. Some even discuss inspiration and creativity. But very few cover an actual process for how writers can consistently produce good work over time.

So here it is — how to write 5,000 words a day.

The Inner Game of Writing

The Inner Game of Writing

Your inner game or mindset is the most important thing when it comes to consistently writing.

Here are some beliefs that I believe are useful for consistently producing good work in quantity.

Belief 1: Writing is a system and anyone can do it

Writing is a system.

Yes, we all have different levels of natural talent and acquired skill.

But at the end of the day, with a basic level of writing talent or skill, anyone can operate a system that still results in consistently good output.

Some people may object to the idea that a creative endeavour like writing can be systemised and turned into a routine.

This is silly.

By having a system or framework within which we can consistently produce creative expression, we are far more likely to actually produce work than without it.

This is the approach that Steven Pressfield of The War of Art takes — you have a system for showing up and practicing the war of art.

“Going to war” with your creativity means that you use routine and discipline, show up on time, put pen to paper and trust in your system for writing to get it done.

As is commonly said, routine sets you free.

Belief 2: Inspiration is perishable

I learnt this from Jason Fried and DHH of Basecamp .

They say that inspiration is perishable, so use it when you can .

I believe this is true — if you have a great idea in mind, you should use the momentum of that idea and ride the chaos and get your writing done during that time.

Whenever you feel creativity arise, just go for it.

And when you lack inspiration, you can fall back on belief #1, which is that writing is a system.

Belief 3: Quantity vs quality

Writing is a skill just like anything else. The more you practice it, the better you get at it.

In the beginning, it is likely that quantity will be more important than quality for you.

You just need to write many, many things and get in the practice. As James Clear puts it , when he started writing he would aim for producing two articles a week, so about eight a month. Of these eight, he expected two to be great, two to be bad, and four to be average.

Not everything you write has to be Pulitzer or Booker -worthy.

As your writing improves though, quality becomes more important than quantity.

This is when you understand the form of your writing, and your routine, systems and habits around writing are established and strong, and you can take the time to step back and hone your craft and words.

The truth that many writers don’t want to hear is that it is hard to produce quality material at the pace of more than two long-form articles per week.

If you want an example of this, check out writers who publish 5-10 articles a day on Medium. Occasionally they’ll produce an amazing piece, but most of it is frankly, poorly written and the ideas have not been well thought-through.

Some of these writers are in their “quantity” phase and that is respectable and admirable. But at some point, we all have to slow it down to produce higher quality work.

Belief 4: The best writing is not the most read

The uncomfortable truth of all arts (and business) is that the best works (and products) are not the most appreciated or used.

Just because you’ve created something amazing… it doesn’t mean that everyone else will recognise its value right away.

This is doubly true in today’s day and age given the amount of information and stimuli that people are bombarded with daily.

What this means is that while you may think your writing has amazing value (and it may very well have), you still need to sell it .

As an artist this flat-out SUCKS because you believe that the work you produce should be able to stand on its own.

But that just isn’t the way that the world works.

Don’t take it from me — both Peter Thiel in Zero to One and Ryan Holiday in Perennial Seller clearly and unequivocally state: Just because you build it, doesn’t mean they will come.

You not only need to produce great work… you also need to market it for it to be read.

Belief 5: You can’t please everyone

No matter how amazing, neutral or wholesome your work is, you will have haters.

Some people out there are just broken in some way or another and want to make their opinions known, usually in a nasty way.

Everyone who produces creative work, from the journeyman writer to best-selling authors, will come across haters during their writing career.

The best way to handle them is to just accept that you can’t please everyone and to move on. Some people will love what you have to offer and some won’t, and that’s OK. There are no awards for arguing with haters, especially on the Internet.

Belief 6: Writing is a small part of an overall process

Most people think that writing is this amazing moment of inspiration where you sit down in front of a typewriter and thoughts suddenly flow from your mind to your hands to the keys and hundreds of pages of manuscript appear.

The truth is the actual sit-down-and-write part is maybe 20% of the process. The rest of the “writing system” consists of planning, editing, polishing, proofreading and more. 1 Hat tip Dr Clare Lynch of Dorris and Bertie .

Tools for Writing

Some people are of the impression that a specific type of notebook, pen or writing app will make them an amazing writer.

This could not be further from the truth.

Nice notebooks, ergonomic pens and well-designed writing applications will make your writing experience more pleasant, but that’s about it.

My general advice is to pick whatever tools you like and are comfortable with and use them, as that will motivate you to write more.

Let’s look into some specifics.

Tools for planning

We’ll talk about the different stages of the writing process in the next section, but these are the tools I like for planning.

1. Mind maps

Mind maps look like this:

Mind map for this article

They are my preferred tool for research and planning articles as I can quickly rearrange ideas, writing flow and add/remove concepts as I need to.

I like Mindjet MindManager , others like Mindnode . There are many, many other alternatives available as well.

2. Outlines

Some people prefer outlines to mind maps and that’s perfectly fine.

They are literally a linear text document with some bullet points about the different concepts explored in a piece of writing.

This can be done in any word-processing application like Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

3. Collections

A collection is a compilation of papers, notes, post-its or ideas that you put together during your planning phase.

These add up to the overall theme of the piece you are writing.

For shorter-form pieces like articles or guides you probably don’t need a collection, but for something longer like a book or article series you will.

Some applications like Scrivener have a collection feature built-in, but a folder on your computer or a paper folder works just as well.

Writing apps and tools

There are many different apps and tools available for writers nowadays — and that’s a good thing.

I personally like and use Ulysses (which I’m writing in right now) as it has a typewriter mode, markdown support and publication features for WordPress.

I’ve also heard good things about Scrivener but haven’t used it for a number of years.

Pen and paper or a typewriter also work if you want to go old-school.

And of course, there’s nothing wrong with writing in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Editing tools

Editing tools are a more recent invention, and they essentially use algorithms to help you improve your grammatical and linguistic expression.

Grammarly is the most heavily promoted editing tool online. I personally don’t use it as I think my grammar is pretty good, but I’ve seen it to be incredibly useful for non-native English speakers.

Hemingway is a tool that helps you clean up expressions, complicated sentences and adverb usage, supposedly as Hemingway would have done. I do run all my writing through the app — and then proceed to ignore most of the suggestions 🙂.

Ulysses now has a built-in style editor powered by LanguageTool Plus . I haven’t used it extensively but it seems complementary to Hemingway and I’ll be running my writing through it as well.

Standard operating procedures for writing

The last set of “tools” I consider useful for writing are standard operating procedures (SOPs) .

SOPs are written documents that outline how to complete a certain process, in this case the stages of the writing process.

In practical terms this means that I have SOPs for research, writing, editing and all the other stages of my writing system.

Writing SOPs

These SOPs have checklists so that I don’t miss anything at each stage, and so that I know what to do next to push each piece of writing forward.

They also make writing easier on the days when I have little inspiration — as mentioned before, routine sets you free.

The Writing Process

Here is the full writing process and system that I use to produce consistent output every single day.

  • Writing, editing and planning are not the same.
  • Routine is important, but just sitting down and putting pen to paper does not produce greatness. Unless you’re Seth Godin .
  • Writing is only about 20% of the process.

This system is geared towards producing blog and online content but can be easily modified for writing other genres and forms — simply remove the “graphics” and “publication” stages and replace them with “typesetting” or what you require.

1. Inspiration and ideas

Your inspiration and ideas come from everywhere.

Any conversation you have had. Anything you have read. Anything you have watched. Anything you have experienced.

As a writer, everything you eat, live, breathe and do can be sourced to create ideas for something to write.

It doesn’t matter where you get your ideas and inspiration from, but you must have a process for capturing and then developing them.

I recommend a quick capture/inbox system for quickly jotting down ideas when they arise.

Get them down first, and then work through them later.

I get most of my article ideas when at the gym, reading books, having lunches/dinners/coffees with others and working with clients.

2. Research and development

Once you have your list of ideas, you need to select one and start developing it.

Selection is dependent on what you are writing for (blog, Medium, magazine, book, otherwise) and I’ll cover my process for that in the How I Write section.

But for now, you can take a selected idea and start developing it.

This can be as simple as creating a folder on your computer to collect material related to the idea, and starting your choice of a mind map or outline.

I recommend starting with a brain dump .

This is where you sit down and get down all your thoughts related to the idea. It doesn’t need to be organised, edited or refined at this point, just get it all down.

Once you have done this, one of two things will be clear. Either:

  • Everything’s already there and you just need to organise it a bit. Or,
  • You need to do more research.

If you need to do more research , then do it. Look up your citations, research papers, perform fact checks and craft stories.

Note: Some pieces of writing require a lot of research, some will require none.

Once this research is done, go back to the brain dump step.

And continue alternating between brain dumping and researching until you’re happy with the initial outline/plan.

When you feel (yes, feel) that there is nothing more to research or get down on paper, then organise your outline or mind map so that’s it coherent and flows linearly.

Because it is always easier to write something if you know what the end is before you start.

Remember, research and development is 40% of our writing process and you should be spending the most time on it. If you get it right, then the rest is easy!

You will know that you are “done” with research and development when you can read through your plan, and see or hear the entire article unfold in your mind… before you’ve even written a word.

Finally — the actual writing process!

I strongly suggest leaving at least a day between when you complete your research and when you sit down to write. This is to let your brain consolidate your ideas and thoughts while you sleep, which makes for better writing.

You will want to use a deep work setup for writing. This means:

  • Your favourite beverage on hand (tea, coffee, water).
  • Some good music, with noise-cancelling headphones if you need them. I personally prefer instrumental/soundtrack music for writing.
  • Adequate time set aside. This really depends on the length of your piece and its difficulty level. A good estimate is one hour per every 2,000 words you want to write.
  • No interruptions. Close the door if you have to.
  • Put your phone in another room or a desk drawer, out of sight.
  • If you have a smartwatch, silence the notifications.
  • If you have a writing app with a focus or typewriter mode, turn it on.

Once you’ve set up your deep work conditions, it’s time to sit down and write.

I personally use this setup:

Aaron Lynn's Writing Setup

I have my plan/mind map open on one screen, and type on my centre screen.

When I’m not at my desk I’ll use my laptop and a tablet as a second screen.

It is possible to alt-tab between an outline and your writing app, but it’s difficult, and second monitors are surprisingly inexpensive nowadays.

If your piece is 5,000 words (or even 10,000 words) or less, I would try to complete it one sitting.

And by that I mean one continuous “chunk” of your day, taking the necessary breaks for water, to use the bathroom, timeslice breaks and so on.

It doesn’t matter if it takes you 3-4 hours to complete — wherever possible, it’s better to get it all down in one go to preserve continuity in tone and tempo.

A couple of extra tips:

  • Try not to backtrack or edit as you write. Just get it all down first. You will have PLENTY of time for editing later.
  • If you are really unsure about something, add an annotation/note within the text and come back to it during editing. For example, I never link in full URLs while writing.
  • Learn to write in Markdown if you are writing for the web. This lets you add bold, italics, headings and more as you write, making your editing and publishing job much easier later on.

Ah editing. This is where the “real work” of writing happens.

Like writing and research, leave a day between when you finished writing and editing to let your brain consolidate what you have created.

If you have a research assistant, proofreader or someone helping you with your writing… this is the stage where they can help you, at any time.

Here are the specific sub-stages that I use for editing.

4.1 First edit

The first edit is simply you sitting down, and reading through the piece as a reader would.

Ask yourself:

  • What do you like?
  • What don’t you like?

And make changes as you go along.

Be liberal in adding things, cutting things and rearranging things.

Fix any stylistic, grammatical or expression issues as well.

If you get to the end and your gut feeling is that you don’t like what you’ve written — throw it out and move onto the next piece. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

4.2 Tool edits

The second sub-stage of editing is to use the various stylistic tools available to you.

Hemingway App

I mentioned 3 earlier:

  • Ulysses’ in-built style suggestions .
  • Grammarly .
  • Hemingway .

This is completely optional and you simply run your text through the tool and edit as you see fit.

Remember that these tools are built on imperfect algorithms, meaning that you don’t need to take on all their suggestions. If in doubt, use your own judgement, not that of the tool.

4.3 Checklist edit

A checklist edit is exactly what it sounds like:

Using a checklist of sorts to edit your written piece.

This falls under the standard operating procedures that I recommended you create for your own writing process.

Depending on what you are writing for, this could be:

  • Proper citation formats.
  • SEO considerations.

It could also be stylistic items, such as:

  • Is your lede clear?
  • Is it clear who the article is for?
  • Is it simple to understand?
  • Could people skim this on their phone on the subway?
  • Does the writing deliver on its promise?

4.4 Edits to infinity

I like to do a second read-through of completed pieces after all the above steps.

This is very much like the first edit except your piece will be much more polished now.

At this point you can continue reading and editing pretty much forever until you are happy with the piece, and for longer pieces of writing, many rounds of editing may be necessary.

This is also a great time to have others help read over the piece for you.

At some point though you need to decide that it’s “good enough” and move onto the next stage in the writing process.

5. Graphics

If your writing needs graphics, diagrams or illustrations, this is the time to create them and insert them.

A tip I learnt from Mark Manson is to pick a general theme for your piece, gather lots of images related to that theme and then eliminate the ones you don’t want.

6. Proofreading

Proofreading is not the same as editing.

Whereas editing is about style and expression, proofreading is about grammar, typos and other errors.

The best way to proofread is to have someone else do it for you.

If you can’t do that, then you can do it yourself by reading your piece aloud, word-by-word.

By this point in the process, there should be no major changes.

By the end of proofreading, your writing is considered “done” and shareable with others — the rest is really just formatting and distribution.

7. Publication/Typesetting/Marketing

Technically, publication and marketing aren’t part of the writing process.

Whatever your plan is to package and distribute your writing, this is the stage for it.

Publishing could be uploading it to Medium, typesetting it as a book or posting it on your blog.

Marketing is simply what you will do to distribute and have others read what you have written.

How I Write

The system above can be taken, modified and used to produce any kind of writing that you want.

Everything that follows from here are idiosyncrasies that I’ve adopted to fit how I like to work and write.

You don’t need to adopt any of these to produce consistent, quality output on a daily basis, and I simply provide them as a reference point or inspiration for how you can implement your own writing system.

Write in batches

I mostly write essays, guides and articles for my website and these vary in length from 700-5,000+ words.

Because of this I like to work in batches of articles.

About once a month, I’ll sit down and look over the content ideas that I’ve captured and pick ten articles to start researching.

I have personally never understood the common concern of “running out of things to write about” because well… if you really understand and are passionate about a subject area, then you should be able to write about it pretty much forever.

This means that at any given time, I have at least 10 articles that are in the various stages of planning, writing, editing, proofreading or publication.

This is a form of batching tasks for efficiency .

If inspiration strikes however, I will often add an extra idea to my pipeline and just start working on it. This is the idea that inspiration is perishable and that you should use momentum to your advantage.

That’s how this guide came about actually — I was speaking with my friend Tom and mentioned that I had just finished a 5,000-word article that morning, and he said “I’d read a guide on how to do that”. And so, here it is!

Track using a Kanban board

Kanban boards are a project and workflow management technique originally developed by Toyota for car manufacturing.

In their modern form for knowledge work they look like this:

Writing Kanban Board

I use a Kanban board to track all of my writing.

As you can see, there are different articles at different stages at any given time.

The advantage of this is that I always know what is next for a given article: That editing comes after writing, that proofreading comes after editing and so on.

Each of these articles has a corresponding folder on my computer where I store the mind map, images and collected information.

Because I write primarily for my website, each article also has a category, an article type and even a unique identifier. The reason for this is that it’s much easier to say “tomorrow I’m going to write ART-101” than “tomorrow I’m going to write my article about writing”.

The screenshot above is from Asana which is what I use to manage all my work projects.

Each article task in Asana doesn’t have much in it. There may be an outline of the general article idea, and there are subtasks per each stage of the writing process.

There is also a due date which corresponds to the publication date.

Asana has a neat calendar view that lets me plan publication dates like this:

Asana Calendar View

I have become quite efficient and effective with my writing which means that I am usually ahead on articles by 2-3 months.

In terms of management I literally just move articles through each stage of the writing process until they’re done.

Writing automation

I am a big fan of workflow automation and I use this to help me write more efficiently too.

In this case, I use Zapier alongside Asana so that when a writing task is added to my writing Kanban board:

  • It automatically receives a unique identifying number.
  • It has a folder created on my computer.
  • A templated mind map outline is copied into that folder, ready for me to start putting ideas into.

Note: This is completely optional and NOT necessary to consistently produce quality writing.

Content as #1

There’s the old internet marketing maxim which is that “content is king”.

What marketers refer to is that a brand or company’s content is the most important thing in its long-term success and promotion online.

I have a different take on this idea.

As a writer, writing is the most important thing that I do.

Without fail, every single day I will work on something related to my writing.

It will not always be writing. Sometimes it is research. Sometimes it is editing. Sometimes it is publication and formatting.

But there will always be something every day, and I make it a point to make it my most important task of the day .

This means it is the first thing I do every day, usually when I sit down to start work at 6am.

With some deep focus and this writing system, I can write 5,000 words a day because my systems, structure and routines are set up for it.

(For reference, this article is at ~4,000 words and I’ve been at it for about 1.5 hours.)

What To Do Next

Writing doesn’t have to be difficult.

With a proper system, I believe that anyone can train themselves to consistently produce quality writing and output, every single day.

I’ve given you that system, in full, above.

Now it’s your turn to take it, modify it and use it for your own work.

is it possible to bs a research paper in one day?

2500-5000 words. If I can... tips please c:

UPDATE: I finished the paper at 11PM and started it at 11AM. I had no breaks except for when I had to eat and go to the washroom. Writing the actual paper was easy but doing massive research and meeting the word count was hell. My head was hurting like crazy after it lol.

The real question is, did I learn my lesson? Probably not but at least now I know how to cram a research essay in one day~ Thanks for the help guys.

How Long Does It Take to Write a 1000 Word Essay?

How long does it take to write an essay?

How long does it take to research an essay?

If you’re writing an opinion piece on something you already have some knowledge about, you may not have to do any research at all. It may just be a matter of organizing your existing thoughts into a coherent essay. If you need to find out about a topic before you begin to write, you can easily get information on certain topics, whilst others will be more obscure and therefore more difficult to research. Clearly, the easier it is to find information, the faster you can write.

How good are your reading comprehension skills?

Some of us can just skim a piece and pick up all the salient points. Others will have to read with more attention, and even re-read a piece several times to extract the information we need. Having good reading and comprehension skills makes writing much faster since you’re able to “get” the facts faster and organize them better. Now you know why you had to do so many reading comprehension tests at school.

How well did you plan?

Throwing yourself headlong at a 1,000-word essay and writing till you reach the word count may seem like the easy option, but it isn’t. Planning your essay so that it begins with an introduction, highlights the most important points you want to make and then wraps everything up into a conclusion actually saves you time. Sometimes, essay instructions will tell you how to structure the piece, so read them carefully and extract any information you can use to guide your essay’s structure.

How fast do you type?

Have you ever gotten lost halfway through a sentence? You know what you wanted to say, but halfway through, the thought slips away from you. The faster you can type , the more easily you can capture thoughts before your mind moves onto the next thing and you forget what you were trying to say. Typing skills are essential in the modern world. Consider using typing games to improve your speed.

How long does it take me to write a 1,000-word essay?

Faster isn’t always better. The more in-depth your report is meant to be, the longer you should spend on it. I can usually research and write a fairly technical magazine article of 1,000 words in three hours, but do remember that I’m a professional writer. I’m fast because I write all day, every day.

The longest I’ve ever spent on a 1,000-word article was 12 hours. It was absolutely brutal! The information I needed to gather was very technical, hard to find, and even more difficult to understand, and you can’t write something until you really understand the subject matter. I also had to contact experts for their opinions, but I couldn’t even ask about their opinions until I could target them with the right questions. As a result, I actually had to write most of the article before slotting in the expert comment.

The quickest I’ve ever written a 1,000-word article is one hour. In this case, I already knew the subject matter well and didn’t have to back up every fact in the essay with references.

Reviewing your work also matters

If you’re writing for grades and want a good one, you need a really good essay. Don’t start writing it the day before you have to hand it in. Try and get your first draft down at least a day or two before you have to submit your work. Then return to it and do your editing. Read your essay aloud to yourself, since this will help you pick up any careless errors you wouldn’t otherwise spot. Check to see if your information flows logically from one point to the next and make sure that you’ve presented your information clearly.

Remember, teachers get tired. They have to read the same kind of essay over and over again when they grade. If they struggle to understand what you’re saying, you might not get as good a grade as you would if you stuck to using short sentences and relatively simple language.

Your reviewing process shouldn’t take all that long. If you don’t have to make a lot of changes, you should be able to do your final edit in under half an hour.

Take your time. Whatever you do, don’t rush. You might want your essay to be written quickly, but if it’s an important essay, taking your time will give you a better finished product. Budget your time conservatively. It’s better to find that you’ve still got time left over than to run out of time and end up dashing things off with a looming deadline.

Below are some basic guidelines if you need a rough estimate on how long it will take to write an essay. It’s important to remember that there are a plethora of mitigating factors that can increase or decrease the time it takes to write. The below numbers are using an estimate that it takes about 3 hours 20 minutes to write a 1000 word essay:

How long does it take to write a 100 word essay? It takes about 20 minutes to write a 100 word essay.

How long does it take to write a 200 word essay? It takes about 40 minutes to write a 200 word essay.

How long does it take to write a 250 word essay? It takes about 50 minutes to write a 250 word essay.

How long does it take to write a 300 word essay? It takes about 1 hour to write a 300 word essay.

How long does it take to write a 400 word essay? It takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to write a 400 word essay.

This isn’t accurate. I wrote my 1000 word essay in an hour, not three hours. You should change the times you have listed to reflect how long it actually takes to write. Obviously you don’t know since the mes you listed are not the same as what I can do!

Did you even read the article? The writer says that it’s based on what she writes and is just a general approximation. How long it takes you or anybody else to write an essay will obviously be different because you’re not the same as everybody else. Nobody writes at the same speed so how long it takes you to write an essay will be different for every person.

Someone doesn’t understand the meaning of “rough estimate”

Well then you must be superhuman or some shit I don’t care, I came here for a question not your butthurt comments. Also, if your so good at writing I wouldn’t have found 2 typos in 2 sentences 🙂

*you’re

If you already have all the research done and know what you want to say, then a 1000 word essay shouldn’t take more than an hour to write. In fact, it probably can be done in 30 minutes or less. The time-consuming part of an essay is the research and how long that takes depends on how much you have to do. But the actual writing of the essay shouldn’t take too long at all.

But research is part of the writing process. If a person writes a book, they don’t only count the time it took them at the typewriter writing. They count all the time it took to research the book as well. Trying to separate the two doesn’t make sense.

I think an important thing to point out here is that there’s a huge difference between writing a 1000 word essay and writing a good 1000 word essay. You can write an essay in hardly any time at all if you don’t do the proper research and don’t spend time editing what you wrote. If you’re going to write a good essay, it’s going to take more time. You should always give yourself more time than you think you’re going to need to get it done.

This applies to all writing. Writing and writing something something well will have a huge time discrepancy even if both writings are the same length. Just because you are able to finish something quickly doesn’t mean that’s the best way to do it.

Exactly! Actually, it can take hours or days to come up with the right line – or it can come in seconds. There’s no real counting in terms of the creative process.

Days to come up with the right line? 😀

It does. Sometimes, no matter how hard you look at something, you won’t be satisfied with it. It may take you days to figure it out. And then, one fine day, you suddenly stand up right in the middle of breakfast and then run upstairs and then type out the right line. Source: personal experience

I just spent 8 hours on a 500-word monologue… This comment made me feel better.

Wow, your advice is excellent it motivated me to do a lot better in my essay.

In my opinion, hours that are presented here a partially true. It may take about an hor to write 300 word essay but editing also takes some time. So on averege, I count the time to write the piece itself + time edit everything.

Research, first draft writing, editing, and rewriting are all part of the writing process. I think the time it takes to do all of them should be counted in the time it takes.

It takes way too long! Teachers should not be allowed to assign essays more than 250 words. They always complain they don’t have enough time and work too hard. It’s only because they make their students do too much work!!

This comment just makes you look lazy. 250 words is nothing. Any topic that needs to be explored will take many more words than this. If you don’t want to write, just admit it and don’t try to project that on others.

If you do your research, use annotations for resources and understand to whom and what you have to transfer than the fewer words the better. Remember that you are demonstrating deep knowledge of the topic by making it accessible to the audience without them doing the research. Simplify, simplify, simplify.

Contrary to what academia self-righteously preach, its imperative for any writing and explanation of thought to be simplified. If you cant explain it in short time/short essay you don’t understand it enough.

I disagree, I feel 250 words is way too less to explain any topic. In my opinion, the maximum word count for an essay should be 1500.

It should take long enough that you get all the points you want across in the writing, but not too long as to bore the reader. Writing should be engaging, not boring.

Nice philosophy, but completely unhelpful if you have a paper due tomorrow and limited amount of time to write. The real world doesn’t work that way.

If someone has an essay due tomorrow and they waste time reading this, then they are a bit of an idiot for giving themselves even less time to work with. If they’re leaving work to the last minute like that, then the only thing they should be doing is jumping right in and writing (or planning the essay, but that should be done much sooner).

This is so arbitrary and will depend on the individual. It’s like asking the question, “how long does it take to write a book?” For some, it will only take a couple of months while for others it will take a lifetime. it also depends on the type of writing you’re doing. Some writing is easy and quick and other writing is difficult and requires huge amounts of research.

The uphill task of writing an essay is doing thorough research. Once you have completed the research, you can deliver a 1000 word paper per hour

I completely agree with you on that one. I recently worked on a 4000 word essay, and while the research did take me three hours to conduct, I completed the essay itself in a bit less than four hours and scored a total of 32/34 points.

So happy to read that! That’s because I just realised, that that is what I needed to read. I’ve got two months to write six 2500 word essays. I’ve been procrastinating because I’m simply in fear of doing a bad job. I’ve done lots of research; made lots of notes; collected citations and written nothing. It’s time. I can do this!

I’m writing a 1600 word essay right now as I type this lol

Then show me after you have finished.

Im writing a 2500 word essay, almost done, I can’t even imagine writing a 10000 word essay in university, that sounds EXTREMELY painful 🙁

I found these estimations quite accurate, thank you.

I’m writing a narrative for my English class right this moment and the word requirements are 800-1000. I’ve only been working for two hours and I’m at 1,157. I’m nowhere near done…

your word requirements are 800-1000 and u have 1157? You’ve been done for a while I would say

Wow i have to write a 1 500 word essay in 4 days and I have about 1050 words left Dono how long thats gonna take me 😂😭😭😭

I am writing a dissertation and those estimations made me positive because just 41 hour to write 12,000 essay seems nothing. But at the moment I just finished literature review(though the hardest part yet) without editing I am already at over 35 hours of work. And that’s not even a half! But I am aiming for a good grade though…

I’ve found these estimates incredibly accurate in my years in college. I’m about to graduate next week and have one more 3500 word paper to write. We’ll see if the estimates hold true. However, the estimates (for me at least) don’t include the time it takes to edit so I usually add a little time depending on how long the essay/paper has to be.

Wow, these tips are helpful, Thank You to the creator of this website. These tips helped me a lot in my essay for school.

  • A lengthy report (2,000+ words)
  • A term paper (2,500+ words)
  • A thesis (5,000+ words)

As you can see, essays of this word count are pretty rare, though still possible. On this page, we’ve collected the top 5000-word paper examples and topics. If you’re looking for more samples, check the IvyPanda free essays page!

✏️ How to Write a 5000 Word Paper

As you may see from the large word count of a 5000-word assignment, it should be well-structured and organized to maintain readability and coherence. Here are some vital tips for organizing an essay or research paper of this length.

The picture describes a 5000-word paper structure.

5000-Word Essay Structure

Given the length of this essay assignment, you will need to divide the paper into sections to allow readers to navigate through the content and find appropriate sections with ease.

As a rule, such papers include:

  • An introduction
  • A literature review that shapes the theoretical basis for further analysis
  • An actual analysis
  • A conclusion

You may also have a separate methodology section if you’ve applied some systematic approach to data selection or analysis, but it’s a rare occurrence in essays.

As for paragraphs, your 5000-word essay may have from 25 to 50+ paragraphs (if we count the number of paragraphs by a standard word count from 75 to 200 words each).

If this looks too challenging, you might want to use the free outline generator we’ve developed.

5000-Word Essay Introduction

The standard approach to introduction writing is to allocate 10% for papers of 1,500+ words in length and 10-20% for smaller papers. Since we have a 5,000-word assignment, 10% will be enough. This means that you will need to dedicate 1.5-2 pages to your introductory section – around 500 words long. Here, you should introduce your subject, specify the problem you’re going to discuss further, and formulate a thesis statement for 1-2 sentences with your main argument and points on the chosen subject.

Try using the research introduction maker to get a sample introduction for a paper on your topic. Two more instruments that you’ll probably find helpful are a hook sentence generator and a thesis statement tool .

Write Faster: How to Write 5,000 Words per Day

by Lewis / October 22, 2019 / NaNoWriMo , Other

“Is it even possible?”

Whenever I tell people that The Ten Day Draft will help them write the first draft of their novel in only ten days, I almost always get the same reaction: surprise, or maybe even confusion. It seems no one believes they can write fast enough to keep up with this quick pace.

However, not only did I complete this process twice myself, but I know of many other writers who write 5,000 words per day every day ! Ultimately, there’s no doubt that writing faster is possible —the only question is, will you take the challenge?

_______________________________

This article is based on the first chapter of my second book, The Ten Day Draft .

If you enjoy this post, I hope you’ll check out the full book for specific prompts, step-by-step guidance, advice, and tips for making your first draft a reality—and of course, let me know what you think in the comments below! 🙂

Write Faster: How to Write 5,000 Words per Day

After all, it’s difficult to stay motivated when faced with such inconsistent progress.

This is especially true considering how much work and creativity a novel requires.

You need to see your story moving forward. You need a definite end point to work towards, some cohesive vision of your novel to bring to life. Above all, you need a light at the end of the tunnel, and it needs to be getting closer every day.

When you’re only writing two hundred words per day, any progress you’re making is invisible.

Think about it: at that rate, a fifty thousand word novel would take well over eight months. It’s easy to see why your motivation would wane over nearly a year’s worth of work. Fortunately, events like National Novel Writing Month are working to change this. By setting hard deadlines, they push writers to get over their reservations and move past whatever subconscious barriers are preventing them from writing faster.

However, I’d argue events like NaNoWriMo don’t go far enough.

Why not cut to the chase and write 5,000 words per day instead of only 1,667? Why take thirty days, when you could write your novel in ten?

Your Ten Day Writing Challenge

Whether you spread your ten days across a month or complete each day back to back is up to you, but when compared to NaNoWriMo, this ten-day challenge is actually easier to take on.

NaNoWriMo asks you to fit an hour or two of writing into each day, and this is perhaps NaNoWriMo’s greatest weakness. If you miss a day or two, it becomes harder and harder to make up that lost time while keeping up with your daily responsibilities, and easier and easier to lose the motivation to continue.

can you write a 5000 word essay in one day

On the other hand, by only planning to write for ten days, you have a full 2/3rds of the month left for all the other things your life requires. In fact, there are nine days in November that fall on a weekend, meaning you only need to find one other day to dedicate writing! It would seem that, despite asking you to write faster, writing your novel in ten days actually makes the whole process easier.

The key to all of this? It’s completely possible.

While writing The Ten Day Draft , not only did I write the first draft of a novel to test my theories, but I wrote the book itself in only ten days as well. I’m not alone in this either. Tons of other writers write even faster than I do by using a few simple, yet important tricks.

Ultimately, the goal here isn’t to write to exhaustion, but to break through the mental barriers preventing you from becoming a more productive author. After all, to grow and improve as a writer you need to write a lot, which means you need to write fast. So, here’s how I taught myself to write faster, and how you can do the same!

6 Tips for Writing 5,000 Words per Day

Make the choice:.

First and foremost, you can’t write a novel unless you dedicate yourself to the task ahead.

There’s no doubt that this will be a difficult project, at the very least because of how creatively demanding it is. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it your all. Think hard about why you’re writing a novel to begin with and record your reasons. What about this story is meaningful to you? What will make it worth the work?

Once you know your “Why,” you can set goals and stick to them.

Pull out your calendar and look at all of your commitments for the next month. Think about what days you’ll have the most time for writing, and which days you’ll feel most productive. Once you’ve found your ten days, mark them in your calendar and treat them like every other appointment, meeting, and class you’ve committed to.

By recognizing why this challenge is important to begin with and then making the choice to stick with it against all odds, you’ll have created your first line of defense when your motivation begins to wane.

Find Your Writing Time:

When will you write?

  • For an hour before work?
  • During lunch?
  • For a few hours before bed?
  • Randomly throughout the day?

No matter what your writing schedule looks like, the key here is to pick a time when you’ll both feel productive, and when writing will fit most naturally into your life.

Of course, much like marking your writing days on your calendar, you should treat your writing time as sacred for the next ten days. If a friend invites you to dinner, decline. If your dog demands cuddles exactly when you sit down to write, tell Fido he’ll have to wait a few hours. While saying no is rarely easy, the long-term payoff is worth it. Remind yourself that you only have to keep this up for ten days and then stick to your writing time as much as possible.

Remove All Distractions:

Distractions are the bane of any writer’s existence.

However, this goes deeper than shutting out noise or ignoring other people.

While almost all of us know to find a quiet space to write in, fewer are as diligent about cutting out digital distractions as well. Whether you’re distracted by emails, texts, phone calls, Twitter, or Instagram, you need to cut the Internet and your phone out of your writing routine. Both are deadly time sinks that can sap your writing time away before you even realize it, and they have no place in the next ten days.

Instead of leaving your phone beside you as you write, put it in a drawer in the other room. Turn off your Internet router and unplug the TV. Whatever you have to do to eliminate digital distractions, be ruthless.

Plan Your Story:

Of course, I know many of you will say you need the Internet for “research purposes.” However, research rarely has a place when writing your first draft.

Instead, you should complete any research during the outlining phase.

Outlining your novel is a critical step when you’re trying to write faster, because it prevents you from staring at a blank screen struggling to figure out what happens next. It’s also your chance to research anything you need for your story, all while organizing the various bits and pieces you’ll have to keep track of later on.

I already have quite a few resources about how to outline your novel , so check those out if you don’t have an outline quite yet. There’s still a week and a half until November begins, meaning you have plenty of time to create an outline before your writing challenge begins.

Embrace the First Draft:

Once you know why your story is important to you, have your writing schedule all sorted out, and have an outline ready to go, you’ll have to face by far the hardest aspect of writing a novel— letting go of your inner editor .

You see, first drafts are bad. In fact, not only are they bad, but I’d argue they’re supposed to be bad. Your first draft’s job to get the core ideas of your story onto the page, creating a foundation you can build from as you begin editing later on. They aren’t the time for polished prose and fancy dialog, especially not when you’re trying to write faster.

However, your inner editor doesn’t understand this.

To them, any perceived flaw in your writing (real or not) is a massive problem, one they have to correct before moving on. Unfortunately, your inner editor can often be too sensitive, deeming parts of your story flaws when there’s really nothing wrong with them. This is especially true during your first draft, when your story is in its earliest, most fragile form.

This means that, before you can write faster, you have to embrace the first draft for what it is—rough, unpolished, and ideally free of your inner editor.

Just Write:

Finally, to write faster you need to remember a simple fact:

Inspiration doesn’t proceed action—action proceeds inspiration.

No matter how uninspired or unmotivated you may feel over the next ten days, you have to sit down and write. This is perhaps the biggest reason writing your novel in ten days is so beneficial, because you only have to push past these barriers a few times, rather than struggling against them for months.

Inspiration doesn't proceed action—action proceeds inspiration. #amwriting Share on X

As hard as it may feel in the moment, you’ll be shocked how much easier writing becomes after you give up your subconscious resistance and simply let yourself write. Much like runners hit a runner’s high after pushing past the physical strain of running, writers hit a flow state after they relax into the process of creating their stories.

There’s nothing more magical than this feeling of ease, but you’ll never reach it if you don’t sit down and put words on the page—no matter how hard it may feel at first.

It’s Time to Write Faster

The Ten Day Draft

Or maybe even write your novel in ten days this November!

The Ten Day Draft is officially available , and it’s full of even more advice for managing your mindset and writing faster. It also covers the second half of the picture — storytelling. After all, writing a novel is just as much about understanding the story you’re trying to tell as it is about mindset.

In the end, we’re all capable of bringing our stories to life. We just have to dedicate ourselves to the journey ahead—and perhaps write a bit faster! 🙂

How to write 10,000 words a day

One of the most popular posts on the Thesis Whisperer is How to write 1000 words a day and not go bat shit crazy . Last year a Twitter follower brought to my attention a post called How I went from writing 2000 words to 10,000 words a day by the fiction writer Rachel Aaron.

I did a double take.

Can you really write 10,000 words a day? Well, Rachel says she can, with three conditions:

1) Know what you are going to write before you write it 2) Set aside a protected time to write, and 3) Feel enthusiastic about what you are writing

I read the post with interest. Much of what Rachel did conformed with what I suggest in my earlier post, but I couldn’t bring myself to really believe Rachel’s productivity claims. To regularly write 10,000 words: It’s the dream, right? Imagine if you could reliably write 10,000 words a day, how long would it take to finish your thesis… A week? How about a journal paper – a day?

Impossible!

Or so I thought.

The Thesis Bootcamp formula was developed by Liam Connell and Peta Freestone of the University of Melbourne. Thesis Bootcamp (and the veteran’s days which follow) is a total program designed to help late stage PhD students finish their thesis document (In some countries this document is called the ‘dissertation’, but I will use the Australian term ‘thesis’ here). The Thesis Bootcamp concept is simple – put a whole lot of PhD students in a room for a whole weekend and set them the goal of writing 20,000 words each.

Yes – you heard me right.

At every Thesis Bootcamp we have run, at least one student will achieve this goal, and many write many more words than they thought they would. In a previous post Peta Freestone and Liam Connell wrote about the ideas behind Thesis Bootcamp . In this post I want to reflect on Rachel Aaron’s threefold advice and put in the context of thesis writing.

1) Know what you are going to write before you write it

Composing a Thesis requires you to do different types of writing. Some of this writing is ‘generative’ in that it helps you form and articulate ideas by… just writing as much as you can, not as well as you can. It works best when you don’t second-guess yourself too much. The philosophy is ‘make a mess and then clean it up’. Perfectionist writers have a problem doing this, which is why we see so many perfectionists at our Bootcamps.

At Bootcamp we teach our students to focus the generative writing energy to productive effect. An important step in this process is for the student to spend at least a week making a ‘Thesis map’  before they come to Bootcamp. The map is essentially a series of sub-headings which the students use as prompts for composing new text, or re-using existing text.

Students, particularly those in the humanities and arts, tend to agonise over the Thesis document ‘structure’. I think the anxiety stems from the idea that ‘Thesis structure’ is some kind of perfect platonic form they need to discover.

It’s important to realise that structure is made, not found. Thesis structure is strongly influenced by disciplinary precedent and the content of the Thesis itself. A history PhD it might follow a timeline from the past to the present; a science PhD might echo the order of the experiments that have been performed. But multi-disciplinary PhDs, or PhDs in ‘polyglot’ disciplines like education, do not have comfortable traditions. This means you’ll have to make the structure up. Try the following technique:

  • This Thesis contributes to knowledge by…
  • This Thesis is important because…
  • The key research question is….
  • The sub-questions are….
  • Decide how long your Thesis will be. Most universities have a maximum word count. Aim for your Thesis to be at least 2/3 of this total (it’s likely you will write more than this, but this gives you some wriggle room).
  • Make a document with chapter headings and word counts next to them. Include an introduction of 2000 – 3000 words followed by up to seven chapters of equal length and a conclusion of around 4000 – 5000 words.
  • Under the conclusion heading write a rough list of points you think will go in there (hint – these should be answers to the research questions you have posed). Study these closely – have you got data, theories, evidence and arguments to support these conclusions? These concluding points, singularly or in combination, will form the ‘key learnings’ of the Thesis – the knowledge and ideas you want your readers to absorb.
  • Each chapter should have at least one key learning in it, maybe more. Under each chapter heading note the key learnings in the form of a brief synopsis of up to 300 words. This synopsis is like a mini abstract that explains what the rest of the chapter will be about.
  • Then make a list of the material you will include in the chapter as dot points. Don’t worry about the gaps and stuff you haven’t written yet – just make a note of them. These should be short sentences that will act as subheadings
  • Now ask yourself: If, at the end of the chapter, I want the reader to be convinced of the validity of this key learning, what needs to appear first? What comes next? And so on. Rearrange or write new subheadings as you go until you have arranged all the subheadings of the chapter in a way that tells the research story.

Following these steps will help you to create the Thesis map – but it’s important to remember that this is merely an aid to writing, not a plan set in stone. You can change, add and move stuff around as you write.

In our Thesis Bootcamps we ask students to just pick a spot on this map and start writing as fast as they can, not as well as they can. Does this generate perfect thesis ready text? Not necessarily, but many students say that the writing they produce at Bootcamp is clearer than the writing they did before it, when they are worrying over every word. I think the thesis map is a big part of this clarity because it keeps the focus tight.

This organising technique works best for very late stage thesis students, but it can be a way of creating order at any time in your journey and working out what you need to find out or write more about. I’ve made a downloadable cheat sheet which shows you my own Thesis map, generated by the above method so you can make one of your own.

2) Set aside a protected time to write

I’ve written so much about this, so I wont rehash it all here. If you are interested in some techniques and ideas for creating protective writing time, have a look at the following posts:

  • Another way to write 1000 words a day
  • Office or cafe?
  • Shut up and Write!
  • Detox your desk
  • A visit from the procrastination fairy

3) Feel enthusiastic about what you are writing

I think this is the ‘secret sauce’ in the 10,000 words a day recipe. Rachel Aaron did some deep analysis of her productive writing days and compared these to the occasional not-so-productive days. The days Rachel was able to write 10,000+ words were the days she was writing scenes she had been ‘dying to write’ – she called these the ‘candy bar scenes’. Days where she found it hard to muster 5000 words a day she was bored with what she was writing:

This was a duh moment for me, but it also brought up a troubling new problem. If I had scenes that were boring enough that I didn’t want to write them, then there was no way in hell anyone would want to read them. This was my novel, after all. If I didn’t love it, no one would.

In the fiction world the answer to Rachel’s dilemma was simple – make the boring scenes more interesting! Unfortunately in Thesis World this is not always possible. There will always be parts that are functional and unexciting; I call these the ‘dry toast’ sections – you need to do a lot of unproductive chewing before you can swallow.

There’s a term that describes this process in gamer culture – ‘grinding’. Grinding is being forced to perform the same action over and over again before you can ‘level up’ in the game and get more powers / weapons / armour or whatever. The level up is the pay-off.

One of the most genius ideas Liam and Peta incorporated into Bootcamp was the squeezy lego blocks. We give these out for each 5000 words written in a particular colour order: green, blue, red and gold. The blocks clip together to make a little lego ‘wall’ that the students can display at their writing station. When first presented with the idea of the blocks the students laugh, but all too soon, they are typing furiously with single minded purpose – to get the next block. We have a little ceremony every time someone gets a block, clapping them as they walk up to write their name on the board. It’s cheesy, but it works to turn writing from a source of pain to a celebration. So think about how to reward yourself for every 5000 words written.

Up for the challenge? Have a look at the testimonials on our ANU You Tube channel . I’d love to hear about other ways of doing writing marathons and what you think about this kind of ‘binge writing’.

how to write 2500 words a day

Do you ever wish you could write more and in less time?

I easily write at least 2,500+ words a day, and while it may seem like an impossible task to some, it is attainable for any writer – even if you don’t have much free time for writing.

To be truthful, 2,500 words for me is kind of on the low end of word counts – many days I write between 3,000 – 5,000 words!

Before you think I must lock myself in a room for 12 hours a day to do this, I want to tell you what my personal life is like.

I’m a mom. I have three kids. We have pets.

Most of my “glamorous life as a writer” is spent doing mom things: cleaning the house, cooking dinner, doing piles and piles of laundry, driving the kids to school, and grocery shopping.

Writing is always on my schedule each and every day – but the schedule gets filled pretty fast!

If I’m lucky, I’ll get a window of 3-4 hours to write per day. Most days, I only really have 2 hours to write. It’s the techniques and tips I’m going to share in this article that make all the difference between writing 500 words and 2,500 in that short amount of time.

Here’s How to Write 2,500+ Words a Day:

These tips and techniques will work for almost anyone. While everyone’s personal situation will vary, you will be able to write more words each day with a little practice and determination.

Step 1: Show Up to Write, Every Day

This may seem obvious, but just showing up is something I’ve struggled with on and off over the past 10 years as a professional freelance writer.

On days I did not have specific tasks, I would sometimes let writing slide. Weeks and months would pass without typing a single word. This was a big mistake, because in that time I could have written an entire book, or even enough content to fill an entire website such as this one.

It’s all too easy to put writing on the back burner, especially if its not something that has an immediate financial reward. I can’t tell you how many times I would get “stuck” simply by thinking other tasks were more important.

Worse, not writing created a vicious creativity-killing cycle of feeling bad about myself on the days I didn’t write anything. Those nasty little self-doubt phrases started creeping in, like “I’m not a writer” and “It’s impossible to make any decent money from writing”.

When you start thinking self-defeating thoughts like that, the creativity and focus disappears. It’s hard to write a cohesive sentence, let alone an article or book when you are in the cycle of anger towards yourself!

If you do find yourself feeling these types of things, one way to break out of the rut is to start small each day.

Start with a 5 minute free write.

The next day, challenge yourself to do 8 minutes.

Then 10 minutes.

Don’t worry about what you write – and if need be, try some of our creative  poetry writing prompts .

Maybe poetry isn’t the type of thing you plan on writing professionally, but it can help wake up that inner writer inside of you and get back into the swing of things.

Work your way up to 30 minutes, and once you are there, make it a point to put writing on your schedule. List it on your planner or even on your calendar.

If your schedule is busy, find ways to prioritize it over other things that are time wasters. There are a lot of ways to make more time for writing !

Just getting into the routine of making writing a daily habit will help you write more consistently. It’s a simple obvious statement, but getting into a regular writing practice is the first step on the path of writing more efficiently.

Step 2: Have a Plan for Writing

Want to know the next secret for writing more words each time you sit down at your desk? You need to have a clear intention for what to write about before you start.

This is another one that probably sounds obvious, but let me explain in more detail.

Many writers start with a general idea and then try to write with no idea what they are even going to say. Oh sure, they may have a general concept, like “a story about cats” or “the history of the typewriter” – but the idea stops there.

If I sat at a keyboard right now and tried to just come up with a story about cats, I can tell you right now even I would be doomed to fail.

To prove my point, let me just try by writing this story in my head.

“Once upon a time there was a cat. The cat was brown. He lived in the second story of an apartment building. His owner was never home, so he was sad. Then he got bored one day…”

Yeah, I don’t think I have to tell you this is terrible writing! I’m pretty sure my 8 year old would have written a better story!

The secret to writing faster is to have a specific plan from the get-go. Your ideas and main points need to be obvious before you even sit down at the keyboard.

Lists: The Writer’s Lifesaver!

can you write a 5000 word essay in one day

My go-to method for staying on track and having well developed ideas is to create lists. I use apps like and on my phone as well as my laptop, and so I’m able to think of the ideas almost anywhere.

I can do this while waiting in line at the grocery store or even while sitting in the carpool line for 20 minutes when I pick up the kids from school.

Using the list method, I make simple bullet points answering some basic questions. What needs to be said? What will make this interesting? What research, if any, should be done before I sit down to write?

Let’s say I’m writing a non-fiction book on the history of a typewriter. My simple list for writing the intro chapter might look like this:

Introduction

  • How we take our laptop keyboards for granted
  • Visual description of writers sitting in a workroom of typewriters
  • The fascinating evolution for communication and connection with others
  • Quote about typewriters

With these 4 main points illustrated in my mind already for the introduction, I’m ready to do the research quickly and then when I sit down to actually do the writing, everything will flow together easily.

While outlining and list-making isn’t for everyone, I find this method greatly helps me organize my thoughts and ideas before ever typing a single word.

Having a clear thought and intention every time you sit down at the keyboard is a lot easier than staring at the screen wondering what to write.

Another added bonus? Your editing and revising process will go a lot smoother as well!

Step 3: Improve Your Typing and Writing Speed

Do you type fast enough? Could you type faster?

My typing rate averages at about 65-75 words per minute. The average person types at about 40 words per minute.

By raising your typing capability to 20 more words per minute, this can greatly add up over an hour’s time. That’s 1,200 more words just by becoming more efficient at typing!

How to Type Faster In One Minute a Day

time yourself to see how fast you can type

This is a simple exercise that can help you type far more efficiently than you already do.

If sitting at your keyboard is a grueling experience, this tip will help make writing far more comfortable and help you type more efficiently.

The first thing to do is get a rough idea of how many words per minute you can type on average.

This can be done through online typing speed tests. You can also simply set a timer, and then begin typing the words from the first page in a book in front of you.

When the timer for 1 minute stops, check your word count. How many words were you able to type without even writing? {Remember, you’re copying something that is already written – this is only to see how fast you can type!}

Of course, writing something is a little bit different from just copying words from a book that has already been published. However, often times when writing it is all too easy to get caught up in the formatting details. If you’re worried more about the font size and the spacing, you’re not writing. Save those things for editing and publishing!

If you want to improve your typing skills, you may want to consider taking a typing course online. However, you can always simply practice with 1 minute drills each day. It’s a good way to make your typing ability stronger, so that when those words do flow out of you easily and beautifully, you can make sure each and every one is captured.

Step 4: Don’t Edit As You Write

This is something that can spell disaster for most writers. How cliche is the image of a writer sitting at a desk typing a sentence, only to delete it and type a new sentence, only to delete that sentence? Or, maybe you think of the typical scene of a writer with crumpled up pieces of paper?

avoid editing while writing

Throwing out every sentence you write my friends is not writing. This is more like rewriting and editing. Rewriting, editing and deleting while writing is a recipe for a disaster.

If you have a habit of doing this, you might find yourself spending more time than necessary to bring your thoughts and ideas into words on the page.

I know some days those words flow easier than other days, but if you’re struggling that much to write a full sentence without getting anywhere – take a 5 minute break and then come back.

Do your best to just sit at the keyboard and write all the thoughts down as they flow – don’t worry about trying to have the perfect grammar or spelling. You can always do this while you edit your work .

If nothing else, the next tip below will help you avoid getting stuck in a rewriting and editing cycle.

Step 5: Write the Hardest Parts Last

For me, the first two sentences of anything I write are usually the hardest. Maybe it’s typical writers block – thinking it has to be absolutely *perfect* before I can continue.

Unfortunately, the strive for perfection can sometimes result in becoming completely frozen. Instead of crafting a great piece, you end up writing absolutely nothing because you are stuck on the beginning sentence that you can’t quite get right.

struggling writer

If you find this happening to you, skip writing the introduction paragraph, or maybe even the first chapter.

Often times I will write the introduction or beginning of a chapter last. There is no rule that says as a writer you have to create the piece from beginning to end. You do not have to stick to a linear timeline while you write!

The same holds true for writing blog posts. When creating articles for this website, I almost never write the beginning paragraph at first. I start with the body of the content, and then once I have a good idea of everything that’s covered, I’m able to easily write a summary and introduction sentence that will hopefully draw readers in to learn more.

Again, a simple concept that increases your writing efficiency.

Step 6: Minimize Distractions

This could probably fall into the first tip I shared about making time for writing, but this wouldn’t be a complete article if I didn’t mention distractions. Distractions can be one of the most deadliest writing mood killers.

minimize distractions while writing

You can’t write while distracted. For me, this can be simple as having a cup of coffee next to me while I write. Before long, my coffee is empty, so I need to get up for a refill.

Eating next to your computer while typing is always a bad idea – this greatly reduces your typing speed. Since your brain is trying to process eating, you also aren’t fully focused on your writing.

Then we have other issues that can cause distraction. Things we may not even be able to fully control – like someone knocking on our door while we’re in the middle of typing the world’s most epic novel ever to grace the land.

It’s hard to predict these types of distractions, but it’s not impossible. You may have to set boundaries with people you live with, as well as friends and family. If you write from home, people might not take it that seriously, and so might interrupt you often. Clear boundaries will help minimize these types of distractions.

Your environment is also very important. If your desk is a cluttered mess, you might find yourself looking at the clutter and feeling bad for being disorganized instead of writing.

The clothes you wear are important also. You don’t want to wear something that is itchy or uncomfortable to sit in for very long!

Lastly, take some precautions to take care of your wrists and posture while writing. A good office chair that is ergonomically designed can make all the difference in how your back feels after an hour or two of writing! Many products also exist to help avoid wrist fatigue while writing if this becomes an issue for you.

Step 7: Do Your Research Before Writing

write more and avoid the internet

If things like people interrupting your work isn’t bad enough, we also have to remember how distracting the internet can be!

On any given social network at any moment there are millions of people actively posting new content – which means you can find yourself spending more time laughing at silly cat jokes than researching the specific breed of cat your main novel character owns.

Online research can be very dangerous for your writing craft, especially with all the shiny distractions of the internet.

It’s all too easy to go from a quick search to check the date of something to losing an hour of your time to social media or checking your email while your work goes unfinished.

To help me stay on task to finish my goal of writing at least 2,500+ words a day, I try to do as much research as possible before I even start. Using apps that block certain websites like Facebook while you do your research can also be very helpful.

If I find myself needing to check facts or a source while writing, I will make a note of this in the work and then only after everything is finished do I look up the information that I need.

Being so close to completion, I’m more motivated to stay on task if I do the research at the very end of the revising and editing process, rather than during the writing process.

We’re at 2,500 Words At This Article, And It Only Took Me 90 Minutes

I just noticed while I was typing this article now that I’m already at the 2,500+ word mark. I didn’t struggle to write this post, because I knew in advance what I would be writing about.

My total time to write this article, from start to completion: around 90 minutes.

While there are times I can write faster than this, I’m pretty impressed with myself. 25% of this article was written last night in the 30 minutes while my kids were doing their homework and dinner was cooking. The rest of this article was written in the hour before they woke up.

I don’t normally break up my writing schedule like this, but it helped me fit writing into a busy day’s schedule on a day I might have normally not been able to write. The best part? It’s only 8:30am today, so now I still have a full day ahead of me to work on my other writing projects!

Hopefully these tips will help you become a more efficient and happier writer – and help you start writing 2,500+ words or more a day.

Do you have any tips you’d like to share for how to become more efficient at writing? What tips from this article are ones you need to remind yourself to do more often? How many words do you average each day as a writer? Share your ideas, techniques, and thoughts in the comments below!

For Step 3, I highly recommend https://www.typingtest.com. I’ve been using it for years and my average has stayed consistently around 80 wpm. It also has a free training program.

Actually, I just re-took the test and got 88wpm average typing speed (Pro)!

Nice! Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks. You writing is nice, warm and helpful. I genuinely enjoyed it.

Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it!

I feel like I write more creatively by hand (but obviously you can’t publish a moleskine notebook), I ALWAYS make sure I’ve listed a few lines a dialogue for each character involved in the scene I’m writing. This semi-concrete (SUPER BRIEF) outline is like an ignition starter-I can usually get a little ways past my outline once I start. If I run into a block I take a few minutes to handwrite again. So I’m big on planning. I did TONS of research before I typed a word of my books and when I need to I go right back to google! I totally agree with writing ideas down constantly. I always keep my notebook with me in case I’m waiting in the car for too long, or get to work a little early. Best tip here is write what comes easy-don’t get fixated on a sene-pull everything you’ve written so far together every few weeks if you’re making good progress and take an inventory of what you still have to write-LISTS LISTS LISTS. Great article thanks!

Lists are great! Thanks Stella! 🙂

Thank you sooooooo much!!!!

Thanks a lot it is really helpful…great guidance.

The advice from this blog have been very helpful. I feel more motivated to write. Thank you very much.
