Instagram's animated text update comes with a few different fonts.

Instagram Launched Animated Text In Stories, & Each Font Has Different Movements

Instagram's latest text update is making it so easy to animate your Story posts. On Monday, Feb. 8, the tech giant decided to give users a more lively alternative to static texts and fonts by rolling out an animated text option — and TBH, the eye-catching addition is long-overdue. If you're ready to try it out, here's how to get animated text in Instagram Story to spice up your photos and videos.

Considering Instagram has already rolled out animated GIFs and stickers on Story as a way to engage followers, the highly-anticipated Feb. 8 announcement that users can now make their text move as well was a welcome one. While the feature — which was first sighted in July 2020 by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi — was previously only available through third-party apps, you can now use animated versions of the static texts and fonts you've grown accustomed to. Every static text option comes with a different corresponding animated look, giving you so many options to spice up your Instagram Story photos and videos.

To try it out for yourself, you'll want to first make sure your Instagram app is updated to the latest version (version 174.0). Then, open the app and head to your Story camera. Every iOS and Android Instagram user should currently have access to the feature, so if you don't see it, try restarting your app and double-checking if you have an update waiting.

To find the animated text, you'll want to snap a picture or video like usual in Stories. Then, tap the text button (Aa) at the top right corner of the screen like you'd normally do to add static text. You'll now see four icons at the top of the screen instead of just three, and the animate button is located at the far right. (It looks like an italicized "A" with two horizontal lines on its left side.)

After you've found the animate text button, choose a style from the nine font styles at the bottom of the screen, write out whatever you want to say, then tap that animate button. Your text will then become animated and, depending on the font style you choose, you can expect to see it flashing on your screen or appearing letter by letter with a variety of different aesthetics. If you're not a fan of one look, go back and adjust the font to find one you like — each font has a different movement.

TBH, it's surprising that it took this long for Instagram to roll out a feature that allows you to animate different texts and fonts, but now that it's here, have fun trying out the different looks and adding a new engaging element to your Story posts.

How to use Instagram Stories’ new Captions speech transcription Sticker

Instagram has confirmed the rollout out of a new auto-caption feature for Stories, which will automatically transcribe words spoken within a video and add text as a sticker.

After a few users began to see the feature arrive within the app, Instagram has started the process of making the tool available to all users.

Once the new Captions Sticker has been applied, Instagram will automatically generate the caption based on the speech it deciphers within the clip. The caption can be edited for accuracy, spelling, style and colour before users post it.

Sound off 🗣 …with sound off 🔇 Now you can add a captions sticker in Stories (coming soon to Reels) that automatically turns what you say into text. We’re starting in a handful of countries and hope to expand soon. pic.twitter.com/OAJjmFcx4R — Instagram (@instagram) May 4, 2021

The feature is primarily designed to aid those with hearing difficulties, but it’s also great for those instances when you can’t have the sound turned on when browsing Instagram.

When we at Trusted Reviews attempted to posted a video story today, we were informed of the feature via a notification from the Stickers tab. Here’s how to enable it:

1) Open Instagram and tap the + icon next to your profile picture in the top left corner to open the Stories interface. Select the thumbnail to choose the video from your or record your video within the app.

2) Once the video has been added/recorded, tap the Stickers option and select Captions from the list. If speech is detected, Instagram will use speech-to-text tech to quickly transcribe it.

3) You’ll see the words appear on the display, in sync with the pronunciation of them. However, there are other options you can select at the foot of the screen. To alter the colour, simply hit the wheel at the top of the display.

4) Tap the text itself to edit the contents and clear up any inaccuracies. Pinch in and out to make the text larger or smaller and use a finger to position it in the optimum place.

5) Post your Story as normal.

In a tweet today, Instagram confirmed the feature is coming to Reels soon too.

How Do Story Comments Work on Instagram (And How to Use It)

speech bubble on instagram story

What to know

  • Your Instagram Stories can now get comments from others.
  • The Story Comments feature is enabled by default. Anyone who can see your story can see the comments on it as well.
  • Users can choose who gets to comment on their story. Comments remain on a story until the story expires.
  • Tap on the speech bubble in the bottom left corner of a story to comment.

Instagram now lets you leave comments on other people’s Stories, which can be seen by others, as well as invite comments on your own Story. Here’s everything you need to know about the new feature – who can comment, who can view Story comments, how to comment on a Story, and most importantly, why should you bother.

Story Comments: How it works

Firstly, comments on a Story are different from the ‘messages’ that you send when you want to text or react to someone’s story.

If comments are turned on by the user, you’ll see the ‘Comment’ icon at the bottom left corner of the Story , next to the ‘Message’ field. When someone leaves a comment, it appears at the bottom of the Story, similar to how comments appear on a Live stream.

But who gets to comment on a Story, and who can view?

Who can comment on your Story?

Anyone who can view your Story can view the comments on it . But when it comes to commenting, it all depends on the one posting. Users with a Private account can allow comments from their Followers or Followers they follow back. Public accounts can allow comments from Everyone or Followers they follow back. Both account types can also turn off Story comments altogether.

speech bubble on instagram story

How to comment and view other comments on a Story?

  • To comment on a Story, tap on the speech bubble in the bottom left corner.
  • Type your comment carefully (there’s no edit button) and send it through.
  • Your comment will now appear in the comments section. Tap on it to view all comments.
  • You can delete the message later. Simply tap and hold on your comment and select  Delete . If you’d rather send it as a DM, tap  Message .

Here’s a visual guide for your reference. Go full screen for a better view:

You can comment on your own Story too, which can function as a nice caption. And if you want to preserve the comments, simply save the story to your highlights.

Although users might be apprehensive of Story Comments at first, the feature can help get a conversation going for as long as the story lasts. Since Stories are how people mostly share these days, it also opens up new ways of interacting on the platform, which is what Instagram’s wants to achieve with it. Whether or not you even want to have comments on your Story is entirely up to you. And if you want to moderate the comments space and block users, there’s that too.

Story Comments is rolling out to users across regions. You should see a message telling you about it when you’ve received it.

Top Instagram Story hacks for 2023

500 million people use Instagram Stories every day. And in 2023, there are more features for businesses to take advantage of than ever before.

Some might say there are almost too many features.

Which is why we’ve narrowed down our favorite hacks and little-known features to 30. These are the most time-saving tricks that will make you look like a pro on Stories and ensure you use the platform to its full advantage.

General Instagram Story hacks

1. create a patterned backdrop for sharing a feed post.

Is adding a custom backdrop necessary when you share a feed post on your Story? Goodness, no. But like wearing lipstick to a Zoom meeting, sometimes it’s just nice to add some pizazz to something routine.

Locarno Beach picture with patterned backdrop

How to do it:

  • Find the feed post that you’d like to share and screenshot it, cropping so it’s just the post.
  • Next, click the paper airplane icon on that original feed post and select “Add post to your Story.”
  • Stretch the feed post to fill the whole screen—this seems wild, I know, but this will make the final post into a tappable link to the original post.
  • Next, open your camera roll and add in the background pattern of your choice.
  • Then, paste in the cropped screenshot of your post on top and arrange or resize as you’d like.
  • Upload the whole thing.

2. Fill the background with a solid color

The default gradient backgrounds are nice and all, but sometimes, you’ve got something to say that can only be framed by a wall of blinding chartreuse.

  • Tap the draw icon.
  • Select a color from the palette ( tip: swipe right to see additional color options, or press and hold down on any particular color to open up a rainbow gradient of choices).
  • Once you’ve chosen a color, press anywhere on the image or text part of the screen and hold two or three seconds to fill

3. Uncover even more colors! More!

You’re greedy, but we’re not judging. You actually have access to every color of the rainbow and then some with Instagram Stories. Find your specific brand hues, or get funky with a questionable shade of puce.

  • Open Instagram Stories and select the brush tool.
  • Tap and hold any of the default color circles. This will open a color slider.
  • Explore the slider to find the custom color of your dreams!

Alternatively, drop an image into your Story and use the eyedropper tool to grab the exact matching shade.

4. Use a green screen in your Instagram Story

Green screen technology has been a gamechanger for social media. You can be anywhere and everywhere. Including the moon. Especially the moon.

  • Scroll right through the filters at the bottom of the screen to get to the magnifying glass; tap to search.
  • Search “green screen” and select Instagram’s green screen filter.
  • Tap Add media to choose your background video or photo from your phone’s image gallery.
  • Take a picture or make a video in front of this fake backdrop.

Instagram’s teleport feature is also fun — it uses the greenscreen backdrop, but the backdrop only appears when you move your device so you can create a fun reveal effect. (You’re in your bedroom… and then you’re on tour with Destiny’s Child! Yowza!)

5. Share with a select group of VIPs

Now that your boss and your Uncle Steve and your strata council president are all following you on Insta, the pressure to be a professional employee/niece/neighbor can really put a damper on your best, stupidest Instagram thoughts.

Instagram’s Close Friends feature is a chance to share more intimate, exclusive content to a select group (sorry, Uncle Steve!). For businesses, maybe it’s a way to offer some special treatment to members or VIPs (which, again, probably does not include Uncle Steve).

  • Go to your Instagram profile, click the three lines in the top corner.
  • Select Close Friends .
  • Search for your BFFs and click Add (there’s no limit right now on how many people this can include).
  • To remove people, click on Your List and hit the remove button (don’t worry, they won’t be notified if they’re cut).
  • Now, when you go to post a Story, the option to share to Close Friends will be at the bottom of the screen next to Your Story.

6. Schedule your Instagram Stories in advance

We know Stories are supposed to be a spontaneous medium. But are you really at your desk or on your phone all day? No! You’re living life so that you have something to make Instagram Stories about.

You actually can’t schedule Stories directly in the Instagram app… but you very much can schedule them with Hootsuite.

How to do it: Check out our step-by-step guide to scheduling your Stories with the Hootsuite schedule.

7. Add a layer of translucent color to a video or photo

Maybe you see life through rose-colored glasses, and want other people to, too. No sweat: just use this quick trick for colorizing your images or videos.

  • Upload or shoot your video or photo.
  • Tap the marker icon on the top of the screen.
  • Select the highlighter icon at the top of the screen.
  • Choose your preferred color from the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap and hold the photo until a layer of translucent color appears over top.

8. Post multiple Stories at once

It can take some time to properly prepare, edit or curate a multi-part Story, as any social media savant knows. But maybe you don’t want to leave your followers hanging as you search out the perfect background color or combination of stickers for Part 2 of your series on your local boat show. The solution is to prep multiple Story posts to all post at once (in the order you choose, of course) using Instagram’s Multi-capture tool.

  • Open Instagram Stories and scroll down to find the Multi-capture tool (a circle surrounded by another circle made of dashes).
  • Take a photo (note: you can’t upload pics or create video in this mode). You’ll see your snap added to a little circle in the bottom left-hand corner or the bottom of the screen.
  • Take up to 9 additional photos, for a total of 10. Each will be the foundation of a separate Story post.
  • When you’re done, tap on the little circle icon (in the left-hand corner, if you’re using a filter, or at the bottom of the screen if not) to move to the editing screen.
  • Here, you can take your sweet time adding text, stickers, music, or effects to each photo.
  • Ready to post? Tap Next .

9. Add music to your Instagram Story

Your Story needs a soundtrack! Needs it.

  • Record your video, take your picture or upload your content.
  • On the edit screen, tap the music note icon on the top of the screen.
  • Select your song.
  • On the bottom, scroll between options to showcase the lyrics or the album cover.
  • At the top of the screen, tap the color wheel to change the color of any text.
  • Tap the number in a circle to adjust the duration of the clip.
  • At the very bottom of the screen, scroll to select the portion of the song you’d like to play.

10. create “progression” posts that build on an image.

Build the drama over several Story posts, by adding new elements to the same base image. Oooh, the suspense!

  • Craft a Story post as usual with video, photos, text, stickers or drawings.
  • Before you upload it, click the save icon (a downward-facing arrow above a line) at the top to download your composition to your camera roll (if you’ve added any gifs or music, this will save as a video).
  • Upload your Story by clicking the Send To button on the bottom right corner.
  • Next, start a new Story.
  • Select Create, then go to your camera roll and select that first Story you’ve saved.
  • Now, you can seamlessly build on top of that first Story with additional elements.
  • Save this new creation to your camera roll.
  • Repeat as necessary.

11. Create a “revealing” Story series

Uncover a mystery image with the help of the eraser tool. This next hack involves skills from trick #3 and #7, above. Hope you’ve done your homework because this is absolutely a test.

  • Add an image in create mode.
  • Now fill the screen with color (see trick #3!).
  • Select the eraser tool.
  • Erase a bit of the color layer to reveal a small sliver of your image underneath.
  • Hit the save button to download this to your camera roll… but do not upload it yet.
  • Uncover some more of the image by continuing to erase the color layer, hitting the save button at various stages to capture the reveal step-by-step.
  • When you’re done collecting all of these images, start a fresh Story post and upload that very first image.
  • Post the next saved images one by one so that followers will see the image being uncovered in stages.

12. Create cool effects with the eraser tool

A few strategic swipes of the eraser can create the illusion of photo and other elements merging into one. Harmonious! Inspiring! Is this… art?

  • Open the photo you’d like to use.
  • Use the marker tool (we like neon) to create a visual element that overlaps the central object of your photo.
  • Now, use the eraser tool to erase any marker bits that overlap with the main photo object. It’ll look like the drawn bits are weaving around it. An optical illusion!

13. Compose a multi-image Story

The more images, the merrier! Use the paste tool to throw as many photos into a Story as you’d like. Who would dare stop you?!

  • Open your camera roll and select a photo.
  • Tap the share icon, and click copy photo.
  • Back in the Instagram app, click in a text box and select paste.
  • Repeat to pile on the pics.

14. Use Instagram’s photobooth feature

You’re a model, baby! Instagram’s new Photobooth feature will take four snaps in a row, which you can then showcase in a variety of dynamic formats. (There are a lot of flashing camera bulbs, we’ll warn you right now.)

  • Open Instagram Stories and scroll down to find the Photobooth tool (an icon that looks like a pile of photos).
  • Choose a filter if you’d like, and then hit the shutter button. You’ll get a 3-2-1 countdown for each of four shots.
  • In the preview screen, you can add music (“Covergirl” by RuPaul is the only correct choice, btw) or click the Photobooth icon again at the top to choose from a few different formats — like film roll, which looks like vintage film.

15. Create Boomerangs from your live photos

Did you snap a moment with your iPhone that you want to relive again — and then relive again backwards? And then forwards? And then backwards again?

If you’ve taken the photo as a Live photo, it’s possible. (If you’re not sure how to take a Live photo in the first place, just open your camera app and tap on the concentric circles at the top!)

  • Open Instagram Stories and swipe up to view your photo gallery.
  • Pick a live photo from your camera roll.
  • Hold down on the photo until the word “Boomerang” appears.

16. hide hashtags and @mentions.

Preserve your aesthetic vision by tucking unlighting hashtags or tags out of sight. It’s the digital equivalent of hiding your electrical cords behind your mid-century-modern desk before Architectural Digest comes a-knockin’.

  • Type out your hashtags and mentions.
  • Hit the stickers button and select your camera roll.
  • Add an image from your camera roll, which will be placed on top of your hashtags to obscure them.
  • Resize your image to fill the screen: the hashtags are technically there for Instagram to read, but human eyes won’t be able to see!
  • If you start off creating a post with an image, add a text box on top and type your hashtags and mentions.
  • With the text box still active, click on the rainbow wheel at the top of the screen.
  • Tap the eyedropper icon.
  • Tap a spot on the photo to change the text to that same color and blend in.
  • Resize the text box if necessary.

17. Express yourself with even more fonts

The standard Instagram Story fonts are just the tip of the typographic iceberg.

If the in-app typewriter or Comic Sans-knockoff lettering isn’t doing it for you, find something more exciting to paste in.

  • Head to the Instagram Fonts Generator website on desktop or mobile.
  • Type in your message and hit enter to see your font options.
  • Copy the message and paste into the Instagram Story text box.

Pro tip: If you have a branded font, add your text right to an image with Photoshop, Over, or another image editing app, and then upload to Stories from there.

18. Layer text to add a shadow effect

For text that pops, try this double-up trick.

  • Type out your text, then select all and copy.
  • Start a new text box and paste in that text.
  • With text still selected, click the rainbow wheel at the top and choose a different color.
  • Shift that text ever so slightly and layer underneath the original text so it looks like a shadow effect.

19. Change text alignment in seconds

Put your Tinder skills to good use here: a quick swipe of the text will spice things up and shift things left, right, or back to center in a snap.

How to do it: As you’re typing, quickly swipe to the left or right to realign.

20. turn your story into a shopping spree.

If you’ve got an Instagram Shop, you can tag your one product in each Instagram Story with a product sticker.

When shoppers want to learn more about that cool hamster-print vest, they’ll just click on the sticker and head to your Shop to begin their digital shopping spree. Learn how to set up your Instagram shop here.

  • Build your Instagram Story and tap the sticker icon.
  • Select Product .
  • Choose the item from your product catalog.
  • Customize the product sticker to suit your brand.

21. Change the color of a question sticker

To color coordinate or not to color coordinate? This is the question… or rather, a question about what to do with your question sticker.

  • Tap the sticker icon and select Question.
  • Type out your question and then tap the rainbow wheel at the top of the screen.
  • Continue to tap until the question sticker is the color of your choosing.

22. Access more gifs than ever

If there’s such a thing as too many gifs, we don’t want to hear it.

While Insta’s search allows you to peruse Giphy’s library, using the Giphy app itself allows you to create albums of your favorites for easy access—and you can share right from Giphy.

  • Open the Giphy app and find the gif you want.
  • Click on the paper-airplane share icon (or the heart icon if you’d like to favorite and post later).
  • Select the Instagram icon and then choose Share to Stories .
  • OR select Copy GIF and then paste into your Story.

Pro tip: If you have your own homemade gifs that you’d like to share on Insta Stories, save them to your camera roll and just copy and paste directly into a Story.

23. Create a Grid of Photos

Instagram Stories’ built-in layout tool feature is the perfect way to share multiple images in a variety of neatly organized grids, formatted to the specific dimensions of Stories. Because sometimes you just can’t choose which picture of your sushi dinner is the cutest, we get it!

  • On the left-hand side of the screen, scroll to find the Layout tool a square with disecting lines).
  • Your screen will now be divided into quadrants. Add a photo to the first square by swiping up to select one from your gallery, or use the camera to take a new picture.
  • Repeat for each quadrant.
  • Alternatively, switch up the layout by tapping the Change grid icon on the left-hand side of the screen.

24. answer questions on a live story.

Answering your followers’ questions on an Instagram Live Story is like a fun interrogation you’re doing to yourself. (Need some help getting started with Instagram Live? Check out our step-by-step guide here. )

  • Prompt your audience for questions in advance of your Q&A with a Questions sticker.
  • Once you’ve gone live, tap the question-mark icon at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap the question you’d like to answer, and it will appear on your Live screen as you broadcast.
  • Questions will be greyed out once they’ve been selected so that you don’t pick the same one more than once.

25. Pin a sticker to your video

This is one of the oldest Instagram Story tricks in the book, but we’re not too big to admit that the mechanics of it have stumped us for years. If you, too, have been longing to pin a sticker, emoji, gif, or text to a specific moment or motion in a video, here’s the breakdown.

Pro tip: not sure which emoji to use in your Story? Try our free emoji translator .

  • This is essential: film the video within the Instagram Story. You can’t upload a video for this trick! We’ve tried! We’ve failed!
  • Add a sticker (or text, etc) to the Story.
  • Tap and hold that sticker.
  • Use the slider to scroll to the right point in your video.

  • Find an effect you like and click the bookmark symbol.
  • Next time you open your camera, that effect will be available to select.

Picture this: a dynamic, moving backdrop for a gorgeous selfie or sick product photo. There’s only one word for this slick combination of animated and still imagery: jazzy.

  • Record a video or swipe up to choose one from your photo gallery.
  • Open up the sticker menu.
  • Select the photo sticker.

How to Add a Speech or Thought Bubble to a Photo or Video

Put a speech or thought bubble into your video using this free online tool. Make your subjects think or say something by adding a sticker and adding text. Perfect for making comics, animations, memes, and more.

How to Add a Speech or Thought Bubble to a Photo or Video

A picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes, adding words to a picture adds context or humor that would otherwise be missed. A thought bubble or speech bubble is a bubble of text ascribed to a certain individual in the scene that derives from comic books.

You can use a thought bubble to show what someone is really thinking, without them having to verbalize it in video or having to use captions.

Here’s how to add a speech or thought bubble to your photo or video in 3 steps:

  • Choose your photo/video
  • Add your speech/thought bubble(s)
  • Finish and share

Step 1: Choose your photo/video

Upload your content to Kapwing’s Video Collage Creator .

Using the resize tool, change your photo or video dimensions as desired. 1:1 format is best for Instagram. 9:16 is portrait mode dimensions. 16:9 is the standard landscape mode dimensions. There are also special dimensions for social media available, or create your own custom dimensions!

Step 2: Add your speech/thought bubble(s)

There's many different ways to add a speech bubble inside of the Kapwing Studio:

  • Image Search : Go to the "Images" tool in the main toolbar and search for “speech bubble” or “thought bubble” to find those images. Make sure the image is transparent or use the " Erase " tool to remove the background from the sticker. You can also add the keywords “transparent,” “png,” or “svg” to find more transparent images.
  • Emoji : Add a speech or thought emoji by clicking "Images" and the "Emoji" tab. Kapwing has the full library of Apple iOS emojis built in. Then, scroll down to find the thought bubble emoji and add it to your picture or video.
  • Upload : Find a speech bubble PNG that you want to use on Google Image search or anywhere else online and upload that file to Kapwing. You can also copy/paste the image from your clipboard.
  • Shapes : Kapwing has a speech bubble shape in the "Shapes" tab. You can add the speech bubble and change the fill and outline color.

Blank image in studio

After you add the speech or thought bubble, click on your image overlay to resize and position it on the image or video.

Once you are happy with your bubble, click “Add Text” to add its contents. Add anything or everything you are thinking or feeling to your image. Then, style and resize the text so that it fits within the speech bubble.

text layer overlay in studio

If you are adding bubbles to a video, check out the timeline feature in the bottom panel to time your bubbles to appear and disappear as the video plays. You can use the "Timeline" button in the main toolbar. In the example below, I added a speech bubble for a short part of the video using Timeline.

Timeline view

Step 3: Finish and share

Once you are happy with your image or video, click Export in the top corner of the screen. After a few moments of processing, Kapwing will return the file that you can save to your computer or phone. Download or share the Kapwing link with your friends!

9 New Instagram Features and How to Use Them

From AI stickers to Broadcast Channels, here's everything you need to know about Instagram’s latest features, with a step-by-step guide to using them all.

Photo of Kirsti Lang

Content Writer @ Buffer

Instagram is one social media platform that is evolving at a rate of knots. Remember when all you could do on Instagram was share oversaturated images of your food? (Love you, Lo-Fi filter.)

Now the social network lets you do everything from broadcasting to your followers to creating your own stickers with AI , with a host of new features only hitting the Meta-owned app in the last few months.

If you’re happy with tried-and-tested photo and video sharing, that’s all well and good, but I’d encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. The Instagram algorithm loves early adopters of its new features.

Making the most of them will help you reach previously untapped corners of your audience or reengage followers. A great example of this is how Notes updates will appear at the top of your followers' inboxes (but more on this below).

In this article, I’ll unpack everything you need to know about Instagram’s latest features and give you a step-by-step guide to using them all. Here’s what you can expect to learn about:

Broadcast Channels

Collab posts with more friends, insights on desktop, meta verified, music on carousels, reels templates.

  • AI stickers

Photo stickers

This is one of Instagram’s most popular new features among creators and brand accounts — with good reason. Broadcast Channels, which hit apps in February 2023, offer you a chance to send mass updates to followers who have opted in.

Creating a Broadcast Channel (only available to those with an Instagram Creator account ) will allow you to send text, photos, videos, voice notes, and even polls to your followers who have joined the channel. Broadcast Channels offer a unique way of sharing launches, big announcements, and company news, or just fostering a deeper sense of connection between you and your followers.

A great example of this is how the trainers behind the Sweat app helped users stay accountable in their 12-week challenge by creating a Broadcast Channel for each program and trainer. The trainers sent encouraging messages, voice notes, and videos, and included polls to make the channels more interactive.

Below are examples from @kelseywells and @kayla_itsines .

We have an in-depth guide to creating your own Instagram Broadcast Channel and how to use it (with screenshots), so do head over there if you’re going to take the plunge. Here’s a high-level overview of how to get set up:

How to create an Instagram Broadcast Channel

  • Tap the message icon at the top right of your Instagram app.
  • Tap the new message icon on the top right.
  • Choose ‘Create broadcast channel’. From here, you’ll be able to enter a channel name, choose an audience, specify an end date, and choose whether or not to show your channel on your profile.
  • Once you’ve chosen your settings, tap ‘Create broadcast channel’ at the bottom. Your chosen audience will get an invite and join the channel if they accept.

Collabing on posts is not a new feature — Instagram made it possible for two accounts to partner on a post back in 2021 — but now they’ve opened the feature up so you can invite up to three friends to co-author a feed post, carousel, or Reel .

What’s great about this feature is that it means your content will appear in the feeds of your collaborators’ followers, too. The post will also be visible on all the collaborators’ profile grids, and all the engagement on the post will be shared by the accounts.

Again, we’ve got an in-depth guide to Instagram collab posts here , but here’s another high-level how-to.

How to create an Instagram Collab post

  • Tap the Create (+) icon at the bottom of your Instagram app and choose the photo or Reel you want to upload.
  • In your final editing screen before posting (where you enter your caption), tap ‘Tag people’ then ‘Invite collaborators’.
  • Search for the users you want to partner with and tap their names to select. Tap ‘Done’ on the top right.

speech bubble on instagram story

  • Don’t forget to write your caption, add a location, and more before you post. When you’re ready, hit Share. Your collaborators will receive an invitation to join the post. Once they’ve accepted the invitation, the post will live on both of the accounts’ grids and feeds.

In a helpful move for social media managers everywhere, Instagram’s analytics , Instagram Insights, is now available on desktop, too.

How to access Instagram Insights on your computer:

  • Head over to your Instagram profile on your desktop browser of choice. Underneath your bio, you’ll find a short summary of your recent reach. Click the ‘View Insights’ link next to it.

Instagram’s New Features

  • You’re in! In the desktop version of Insights, you’ll find an overview of your Reach, Engagement, and more. At the top of the screen, you’ll be able to toggle between specific time frames, from seven to 90 days.

Instagram’s New Features

While this is not an Instagram-exclusive feature, it means a huge change for brands and creators using the platform, so I thought it was worthwhile including it here.

Getting verified on Instagram is certainly nothing new — that little blue tick has been around almost as long as my beloved Lo-Fi filter — but Meta has introduced a whole new way to get one.

With the introduction of Meta Verified in 2023, accounts no longer have to belong to a notable public figure to get the coveted checkmark. Subscribers can pay a monthly fee to be verified on Instagram (and big brother app Facebook). They’ll also get access to some premium features like increased access to support and account protection, and personalized stickers.

How to sign up for Meta Verified on Instagram

  • Head over to your Instagram profile by tapping your profile picture on the bottom right of the app.
  • Tap the hamburger menu (the three lines on the top right).
  • Choose ‘Meta Verified’.

speech bubble on instagram story

  • Read through the explainer, then tap ‘Next’.
  • Choose which Meta accounts you’d like verified.
  • Confirm and pay. From here on out, you’ll be charged the monthly subscription fee* unless you cancel. It could take up to 48 hours for your blue tick (and all the benefits) to appear.

speech bubble on instagram story

*Note that the cost of your subscription will differ depending on your region.

The ability to add music to Instagram photo posts has been around for a few months, but Instagram recently rolled out the feature for carousel posts (those with multiple photos) as well.

How to add music to carousels

  • Tap the Create (+) icon at the bottom of your Instagram app as you would with a regular post.
  • Tap the carousel icon just underneath your photo preview, on the right. Select all the photos you’d like to include in the carousel, then tap ‘Next’ on the top right of the app.
  • Choose your desired filters, then tap ‘Next’ again.

speech bubble on instagram story

  • Now you’re on the final editing screen, where you can add your song of choice by tapping ‘Add music’.
  • Scroll through the list or search for the song you’re after, then tap on it to select.

speech bubble on instagram story

  • Tap the ‘30’ icon to set how long you want the song to play for. Swipe the audio bar at the bottom left or right to choose the segment of the song you want to play. When you’re happy, tap ‘Done’.
  • Again, don’t forget to write your caption, add a location, tag friends, and more before you post. When you’re ready, hit Share.

speech bubble on instagram story

Millennials — remember how you could include a song on your MySpace page? Well, Instagram’s Notes feature is kind of like that (just not quite as invasive for your followers). Regardless, the teens love it, The Verge reports .

Before we go too far down memory lane: with Notes, you can share a short text-based update with followers who also follow you. Notes dropped in December 2023 but was recently updated so that users could share a song as well as text.

New Notes will appear in a bar atop your follower’s messages inbox, so the feature is a great way to keep your account top-of-mind for followers, even if your Reels and posts haven’t quite made it into their feed. It could also help you reach followers who may not have seen new content or announcements (just like @thepilatespt and @paolasbodybarre have done in the screenshot below).

Instagram’s New Features

How to share a Note on Instagram

  • Tap the speech bubble just above your profile picture.
  • Add text by typing in the bubble, or tap the music icon below your photo and select your song of choice. You can have both text and music, if you choose.
  • Hit ‘Share’ on the top right to publish.

speech bubble on instagram story

Sure, video editing is a heck of a lot easier than it used to be, but the fiddliness of cropping and tweaking clips on your phone is still headache-inducing, no matter how often you do it.

Enter: Reels templates.

The feature has been around for a while, but Instagram recently updated the process to make templates so much easier to use.

This clever play from Instagram allows you to effectively steal another Instagrammer’s edit, using your own clips or photos in place of theirs. This is particularly handy for the clever Instagrammers who have managed to nail their video and music timings!

Not all the Reels on Instagram are available as templates (the creator will have had to toggle an advanced setting on, more on this below). On Reels that can be used as a template, you’ll see a little button that says ‘Use Template’ right above the original creator’s name on the left-hand side of the app (like the screenshot below of this Reel by @mati_espy_home ).

How to find Reels you can use as a template

  • Tap on the create (+) button in the Instagram app, then choose ‘REEL’ at the bottom of the screen.
  • Choose ‘Templates’ at the top of the screen.
  • Here, you’ll find a library of Reels you can use as a template for your next video, including a selection recommended for you and trending Reels. Tap on your chosen Reel, then follow the steps in the next section.

You might also find Reel templates you like on the Reels or Explore pages, so be on the lookout.

speech bubble on instagram story

How to create a video with a Reel template

  • Once you’ve found a Reel you like that is available as a template, tap the ‘Use as Template’ button.
  • Tap on one of the clip placeholders to insert your own photos or videos, then ‘Next’.

speech bubble on instagram story

  • From there, you can either publish your new Reel as is (tap ‘Next’ again), or hit the ‘Edit video’ button on the bottom left to make tweaks.
  • If you tap the Edit video button, you‘ll be taken to the regular Reels editing dashboard. Here, you can change the timings of the clips, the music, and the transitions that carried over from the template. You can also add more photos or videos, text, and stickers. When you’re happy with your version of the video, tap the blue arrow on the right-hand side of the screen.
  • This is the final editing screen before posting. You can write your caption, change the cover of your video, tag people, add a button, location, or a paid partnership label, and more.

speech bubble on instagram story

  • It’s also where you can set whether or not your Reel can also be used as a template. Scroll to the bottom to find ‘Advanced settings’.
  • Toggle ‘Don’t let others use this reel as a template’ on or off.
  • Ready to send your Reel out into the world? Tap ‘Share’.

Instagram is clearly leaning into stickers this year, with not one but two new ways to create your own unique stickers in Stories and messages.

AI Stickers

Whether you’re looking to find a sticker applicable to your niche situation or just something really silly, AI stickers can be a ton of fun.

Case in point for the latter: My request for a sticker that communicated to my husband that he needed to stop sending me distracting Reels while I was working on this article yielded the confusing, albeit adorable, sea monster below. (To be fair, it was a terrible prompt.)

Instagram’s New Features

More straightforward prompts will definitely generate better results — Buffer Content Writer Tami Oladipo ’s at the bottom of this section is a great example. These stickers offer a great way to keep the conversation going in your messages or add some personality to your Stories .

To send an AI sticker on Instagram via DMs:

  • Tap the messages icon on the top right of the app to go to your inbox and find the person you want to send your sticker to. (You can also do this by replying to one of their Stories by tapping the ‘Message’ button when viewing their Instagram profile.)
  • Tap the '+' icon on the bottom right, then choose Stickers.
  • Enter a text prompt in the search bar, and your AI stickers will appear below.
  • Tap an AI sticker to send it to your chat.
  • It’s worth noting that if you send an AI sticker, people in the chat will also see the text prompt that you entered.

speech bubble on instagram story

To add an AI sticker to an Instagram Story:

  • Tap the Create (+) icon at the bottom of your Instagram app (or tap on the blue + next to your profile in the Stories bar).
  • Take a photo or video, or choose one from your camera roll.
  • Tap on the stickers icon (the square with a smiley face), then tap ‘AI STICKERS’.
  • Enter a text prompt, then tap ‘Generate’.
  • Tap on an AI sticker to add it to your story.

If you're after something really unique for your Stories, Instagram now lets you turn your own photographs into stickers.

How to create a photo sticker in Instagram Stories

  • Tap on the stickers icon (the square with a smiley face), then tap the 'Create' icon. (In the screenshot below, you'll see all the stickers I've already created pop up in the menu, too.)
  • Choose a photo from your camera roll you'd like to turn into a sticker.
  • Instagram will automatically outline the best part of the photo to use, but you can choose your own by tapping the 'Select manually' button on the bottom left. When you're happy, tap 'Use sticker'.

1 Detail Reveals Ip Man's Strongest Opponent In Donnie Yen's Movies (It's Not Close)

Why 2-season cancelled hbo series is a "timeless classic" with julius caesar events explained by roman expert, jeri ryan is right: seven on nine isn’t a sexual character on star trek: voyager.

Instagram users are eager to try out the Notes feature that Meta released recently. People enjoy Instagram because it lets them connect personally with friends and followers, and Instagram has been teasing new features that allow users to start conversations in new ways.

Instagram rolled out a new feature that is user-friendly and engaging. Known as Notes, this feature allows users to communicate with others through a short text message headlined on a Status Bubble displaying their profile picture. For example, if someone posted ‘ I’m home for the holidays ,' the Note would appear below their photo. These Status Bubbles appear in Instagram’s Messenger area above the DMs. Users like it because it makes discussions more intimate than using the comment feed on a public post.

Utilizing Instagram's Notes Bubbles

Screenshot of Instagram's 'Leave a Note' menu and 'respond to Note' menu.

Users can easily use Instagram's Notes feature. To start, open the app and tap the Messenger icon at the top right. At the top of the menu, users will see Status Bubbles that say ' Leave Note .' Click the + to open a new window. The ' Share what's on your mind ' box allows users to type a note up to 60 characters long. For instance, ‘ What music should I listen to ?’ To add some extra flair, add an emoji! Before sharing, choose either ' Followers you follow back ' or ' Close Friends .' As soon as the Note is drafted, tap ' Share ,' and the short message will display above the user's profile icon for 24 hours.

Users can respond to Notes by tapping the Status Bubble, and this interaction will be private. While the conversation begins with the Status Bubble, it moves to the DMs with replies. Type in the message when the text prompt appears, and the response will appear in the creator's DM, where the two users can converse further.

The feature has only been available for a short time, but already, Meta has expanded its capabilities to let users get even more creative with their status updates. In June 2023, Instagram updated Notes to support music clips . Now, users can post a 30-second song preview to their Notes, along with a short caption. In the same place users would go to create a new Note, they’ll now see a music note icon. Tapping this will open Instagram’s music library, from which they can select a song and choose the portion they want to share.

What are Instagram 'Notes'? Here's how to get and use the app's newest sharing feature

Instagram users , you may have noticed something new at the top of your inbox.

On Dec. 13, the social media company announced the rollout of Instagram "Notes", a feature they described as "a new way to share your thoughts and see what your friends are up to.”

The sharing feature is similar to old-school messaging services like AIM and MSN Messenger, giving users the option to post about their current mood, status or anything else on their mind in 60 characters or less.

If you've seen notes popping up and have questions about how to post your own (or turn them off completely), then keep reading for all the details.

Here's everything you need to know about Instagram Notes, including how to get the feature, why you might not be able to find the notes on your app and more.

What are Instagram Notes?

A look at Instagram's new feature.

Instagram Notes are short posts or messages that appear at the top of other people's inbox.

"When you post a note, you can select followers who follow you back or your Close Friends list as the audience," Christine Pai, a spokesperson for Meta (Instagram's parent company) tells TODAY.com in an email.

Think of it as a thought bubble that appears above your photo or icon in other people's inbox. You'll be able to see your own note there, along with those posted by friends or followers.

Instagram Notes can include text and/or emojis and must be 60 characters or less.

Instagram Notes are totally customizable, but examples include "Vacation starts today let the good times roll 🌴" or "Anyone else watching the big game?"

The note will remain at the top of your friends or followers' inbox for 24 hours before disappearing. You can also update, edit or delete your note at any time.

Friends or followers have the option to respond to your note (as you do theirs) and replies will appear as DMs in your messages inbox.

How to get Instagram Notes

Wondering where to find the new sharing feature?

Pai tells TODAY.com that the new feature is available to everyone with Instagram with the exception of users based in the European Union, United Kingdom and Japan due to regulatory constraints. “We plan to roll out in those countries early 2023,” Pai says.

Why can’t I see Instagram Notes?

If you don’t see any notes and aren’t in one of the specific regions where the messaging tool has yet to be launched, Pai recommends updating the app or logging out, then back in again.

“Usually ‘refreshing’ the app works,” she says.

If you aren’t running the latest version of Instagram, it may be time to update the app on your iPhone or Android.

How to use Instagram Notes

Another look at how notes show up in your inbox.

Follow these steps to create a note or see notes left by followers:

  • Open your DM inbox on Instagram.
  • Your profile photo or icon should appear at the top left along with other followers or friends who've posted a note.
  • Click on "+" to create your own message or status.
  • Write a note that's 60 characters or less. The note will delete after 24 hours.
  • Click on notes shared by friends or followers and type out a response in the message field. Your response will show up in their inbox.

How to turn off Instagram Notes

If you want to keep things the way things were, then you may be tempted to turn off the feature.

For the time being, you're out of luck. According to Pai, Instagram Notes cannot be turned off completely. However, much like Instagram stories, users have the ability to mute specific individuals if they don't want to see what they're posting.
