The industrial engineering program at ASU is consistently ranked among the top 20 graduate programs in the United States. Faculty members in the program are internationally recognized for their innovative research projects funded by both government and industry.

The PhD program in industrial engineering engages students in fundamental and applied research. The overall educational objective of graduate study in industrial engineering is to improve each student's ability to identify, define and solve problems and perform original research in order to address the underlying causes of these problems. Industrial engineers develop qualitative and quantitative abilities to guide the design and operation of sustainable organizations and systems.

This doctoral program provides students with a rigorous education and with research and educational experiences. A large number of students are involved in applied research projects that are carried out in the context of government or privately funded research. Students have many opportunities to participate in highly impactful research projects and interact with the leaders in the subfield in which they choose to specialize. Many students graduate with significant accomplishments resulting from the work they performed during the course of their doctoral study.

This program may be eligible for an Optional Practical Training extension for up to 24 months. This OPT work authorization period may help international students gain skills and experience in the U.S. Those interested in an OPT extension should review ASU degrees that qualify for the STEM-OPT extension at ASU's International Students and Scholars Center website.

The OPT extension only applies to students on an F-1 visa and does not apply to students completing a degree through ASU Online.

Additional Curriculum Information Students are required to complete five core courses within the first year of full-time enrollment in the doctoral program. To be allowed to continue in the program after completion of the core courses, each student must successfully pass a qualifying exam on three of the five core courses.

Eligible students can request a master's in passing after successfully completing the qualifying exam and completing 30 credit hours in the doctoral program.

A written and an oral comprehensive examination are required no later than the semester following completion of 57 credit hours of coursework in the plan of study. The student must also successfully defend the dissertation prospectus and the dissertation research.

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program, or applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.

  • three letters of recommendation
  • proof of English proficiency

Additional Application Information An applicant whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of their current residency.

ASU does not accept the GRE® General Test at home edition.

At the time of application, all applicants must have successfully completed a minimum of nine credit hours of calculus (Calculus I, II, III) with a grade of "C" or higher (scale is 4.00 = "A").

A student with any deficiency coursework must complete each deficiency with a grade of "B" (3.00) or better within two semesters of admission to the program.

PhD in Industrial Engineering

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Industrial Engineering is awarded to students who demonstrate high academic achievement and research competence in the field of industrial engineering. To earn a PhD, a student must complete approved and advanced course work and submit and defend an original dissertation of independent research. The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering expects all successful doctoral candidates to show depth of knowledge and research innovation in their chosen field of specialization.

The MIE department admits applicants to the PhD program either directly after earning a suitable bachelor’s degree (i.e., bachelor’s entry) or after earning a master’s degree (i.e., advanced entry).

Experiential Learning

Northeastern combines rigorous academics with experiential learning and research to prepare students for real world engineering challenges. The Cooperative Education Program , also known as a “co-op,” is one of the largest and most innovative in the world, and Northeastern is one of only a few that offers a Co-op Program for Graduate Students. Through this program students gain industry experience in a wide variety of organizations, from large companies to entrepreneurial start-ups, while helping to finance their education. Students can also participate in an internship or the university’s Experiential PhD program.

Ph.D. Degree Program

There are three paths to the PhD Degree in IE:

  • BS to PhD — Directly from BS to PhD,
  • MS in IE to PhD — For someone with a master’s degree in IE, or
  • MS in non-IE to PhD — For someone with a master’s degree in a different discipline

Both BS and MS degrees must have been obtained from an accredited institution in Industrial Engineering or a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.

Research

Dissertation

  • Students transferring from other institutions may petition up to 6 semester hours with a minimum grade of "B" to be transferred upon approval of the Graduate Program Director, IE Chair, and the Associate Dean of the Cullen College of Engineering.
  • The course selection must be approved by the student’s dissertation advisor.
  • Students whose primary language is not English are required to complete an engineering communications course (INDE 6359) if the GRE verbal score is below 150.
  • Full time students are required to complete one year residency with full time enrollment.
  • Full-time students must enroll a minimum of 9 credit hours per semester, and the enrollment requirement for part-time students is 3 credit hours per semester.
  • Satisfactory performance on the Ph.D. screening examination and oral defense of proposal is required prior to the final defense of the Ph.D. dissertation.
  • The Ph.D. degree will be awarded upon the successful defense of the dissertation followed by the submission of the approved copy of the dissertation to the UH Graduate School.

Screening Exam

The following rules apply to any graduate students who wish to pursue the Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering.

  • Two mandatory subjects: Probability and Statistics for Engineers, Advanced Linear Optimization. (Students who scored B+ or lower in INDE 6333: Probability and Statistics and/or INDE 6372: Advanced Linear Optimization are encouraged to contact IE graduate program director for more information before taking the screening exam.)
  • One subject of choice based on the research area.
  • The in-depth exam is a week-long take-home exam to test the student’s ability to conduct research in the student’s research field.
  • Students must receive a grade of "Pass" in each subject before he/she can be formally considered as a Ph.D. candidate.
  • The exam must be taken on or before the completion of 18 graduate semester hours after entering the Ph.D. program.
  • This exam is administered by the department twice annually: in early January and August.
  • Students must register for the test no later than two weeks prior to the exam.
  • The registration form can be obtained from the department or download here .
  • The students will be notified of the exam results approximately two weeks after the completion of the exam. The results will also be sent to the Graduate Program Director and the IE Department Chair.
  • Students shall not be given more than two opportunities to take the exam. For the second trial, students may take only the subject areas they failed in the first trial. The second trial must be taken as soon as the next exam is offered again after the first trial.

Dissertation Advisory Committee

The candidate must select a dissertation advisory committee, whose composition is subject to the approval of the IE Graduate Program Director and the IE Department Chair.

  • The advisory committee must be composed of at least five faculty members, including at least three members from the IE department and two faculty members outside the department.
  • The IE Graduate Program Director and the IE Department Chair must approve any subsequent changes to the composition of this committee.
  • Students are not allowed to change committee members without the permission of the Ph.D. Program Director and the department chair. A formal petition must be submitted to the department for changing Ph.D. committee members.

Formal Dissertation Proposal

A formal written dissertation proposal must be submitted to the dissertation advisory committee in a timely manner after completing the Ph.D. screening examination. The student should provide committee members with a copy of the proposal approximately two weeks before the scheduled presentation.

Industrial Engineering PhD

School of engineering and applied sciences, program description.

The Industrial Engineering PhD program develops research leaders who can excel in academic settings and applied laboratory or industry environments. Through close collaboration with esteemed faculty members specializing in operations research, production systems, manufacturing, and human factors, our students gain invaluable insights and expertise. The program integrates rigorous coursework with supervised research experiences, culminating in a substantial and independent research project. Students become independent scholars, showcasing their work through presentations at conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

G-SCOP is a multidisciplinary research laboratory addressing the challenges of designing, optimizing, and managing products and production systems. The research conducted covers the entire lifecycle of a product or product/service, from its creation to its end-of-life, including design, production, distribution, usage, and then recycling, reuse, or disposal phases.

The production system can address both manufacturing industries and health systems, energy management and usage systems, and more. In this field, the major scientific challenges in the coming years are divided into two main areas:

- Achieving the digital transition of production and product/service design systems.

- Developing a human- and society-centered production and product/service design system. G-SCOP tackles these challenges through research conducted in Flow Management and Integrated Product Design, supported by cross-disciplinary expertise in Industrial Information Systems and Optimization Methods, both in their applied and fundamental forms. The recruited individual will be integrated into the GROG team, whose work focuses on decision support to optimize the performance of production systems, whether in the design or operational phase.

These production systems for goods and services can be a single machine on a production line, a complete workshop, a logistics platform, or a supply chain consisting of multiple companies. For this purpose, operational research tools and techniques are used. The work addresses both theoretical models and industrial applications. PhD thesis offer description: The increasing market share of electric vehicles will lead to a growing demand for batteries [5,13]. These batteries are primarily composed of "cells," which themselves made of materials (Lithium, Cobalt, Graphite, etc.) considered strategic by the European Commission. These materials are costly to extract and are subject to multiple risk factors (geopolitical, environmental, social, etc.) [3]. These risks are further amplified by the reaching of planetary limits [12]. One of the industry's challenges is to establish a supply chain that is resilient and aims to reduce environmental impact [9]. The concept of circularity, derived from the circular economy, aims to address these goals [1,6,7]. Applied to a supply chain [2,4], its primary principle is to reuse products at the end of their life cycle (production waste, end-of- life products, or those no longer in use) by moving as little backward in the chain as possible. This is referred to as "reuse" if the product is reused as is, "remanufacturing" if assemblies are reused, and so forth [11]. The second principle is to use a product that no longer meets its original specifications for a different purpose, known as "repurposing" [8,10]. From a supply chain perspective, this involves sending products, with or without transformation activities, to other supply chains. This PhD thesis aims to characterize the activities necessary to increase the circularity of a supply chain. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to formalize and simulate various potential scenarios for such circular supply chains. In the first phase, for each scenario, it will be required to implement means to measure circular performance at different decision levels (Strategic, Tactical, and Operational). The next phase will involve comparing this performance regarding sustainable issues (economic, environmental, and social) to propose a method for scenario selection. Finally, a deployment methodology can be proposed as support for operational activities.

Expected Outcomes

• A state-of-the-art review of circularity indicators, circular supply chains and production systems for electric vehicle batteries.

• Definition of scenarios for developing circular activities.

• Modeling and quantification through simulation and/or testing of circular activity deployment scenarios

. • Implementation of a methodology and digital decision support tools to support the deployment of scenarios.

What’s the Difference Between Explosion and Fire Protection Engineering? 

Fire protection engineering programs have been in the United States for some time now.  These programs focus on the prevention and control of fires. Update on cornell-uaw negotiations.

Dear Ithaca campus community,

As you may know, the university and the United Automobile Workers (UAW) have been working on a new collective bargaining agreement since April 2024. The UAW represents about 1,300 of our employees across campus, including in Dining, Building Care, Facilities, CALS, CVM and the Statler Hotel. The university and the UAW have had a productive labor-management relationship for more than 40 years, and we are committed to the continued success of this relationship and to reaching our next agreement.

Despite the best efforts of the university, the parties have not yet reached a new agreement. The parties have been successful on a number of key issues concerning the bargaining unit, such as health and personal leave (“HAP”), vacation consistent with university policy, and health and safety. We have proposed to the UAW that we use the federal mediator assigned to the negotiations or a mediator of the UAW’s choice to assist the parties in reaching a complete agreement. The UAW has rejected this suggestion.

The University’s latest offer to the UAW includes the following:

  • 6% wage increase in the first year, with additional increases in each of the additional proposed years.
  • Changes to wage rates based on years of service which, with the 6% increase, result in wage increases of at least 10% for more than half of the unit.
  • A reduction of the time for new employees to reach the job rate for their positions, from three years to one year.
  • An increased wage for our most senior employees, recognizing them at 10 years and 25 years of service.
  • Bonuses recognizing the longevity of employees at 5 and 15 years of service.
  • Increases to clothing and shoe allowances across the unit, including provision of these allowances to additional groups of employees.
  • Increased pay rates for employees providing peer-to-peer on the job training.
  • Increased eligibility for shift differential.
  • Support for tipped employees with retirement savings.

We are committed to continuing to bargain with the UAW to reach a new agreement.

The university is aware that the UAW has voted to authorize a strike and has scheduled a rally for today at Bailey Hall. If a strike is called, employees represented by the UAW may decide to join the strike or they may elect to report to work. We respect employees’ right to make this decision.

If the UAW calls a strike, the university has contingency plans in place to maintain essential services. Any shifts in operations, such as reduced dining hours or offerings, will be communicated on a rolling basis as these impacts may vary day to day. Employees with questions should consult with their supervisors for additional guidance on contingency plans.

The university continues to bargain in good faith. We remain hopeful we will find common ground on the remaining open issues and reach a tentative agreement acceptable to the employees represented by the UAW.
