Is deposit growth a challenge for SBI? Here's what chairman Dinesh Khara has to say

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has raised the alarm multiple times, while the finance minister recently urged public sector banks to develop innovative strategies to attract more deposits.

Business Today Desk

  • Updated Aug 24, 2024, 1:29 PM IST

Khara’s remarks come amid growing concerns from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the government regarding the deceleration in deposit growth across the banking sector.

State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman Dinesh Khara remains confident about the bank's position despite concerns over slowing deposit growth, stating that that the lender continues to achieve strong asset growth.

Khara’s remarks come amid growing concerns from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the government regarding the deceleration in deposit growth across the banking sector. With credit growth slowing to 13.8 percent in the last fortnight and deposit growth dipping to 10.3 percent, the issue has drawn significant attention.

  • UPI transaction: Shark Tank judge Anupam Mittal raises concern over SBI's UPI limit transaction errors

Khara on these concerns said: “We are in a position to support our loan book growth well and so long as we can do that, I don't think we have any challenge.” He emphasized that SBI is managing its resources by unwinding excess investments in government securities—currently over Rs 16 trillion—to ensure sufficient funds for lending.

In the first quarter of the current fiscal year, SBI recorded an 8.18 percent year-on-year growth in deposits, reaching Rs 49.02 trillion, up from Rs 45.31 trillion in the same period last year. However, there was a slight sequential decline of 0.29 percent in deposits.

As Khara prepares to step down on August 28 after nearly four years at the helm of SBI, he reiterated the bank's ability to sustain growth through strategic resource management. SBI in its latest report had challenged the perception that deposit growth in the banking sector is slowing, calling it a "statistical myth."

While it's true that credit growth has outpaced deposit growth in recent years, the report argues that a deeper analysis paints a different picture. In FY23, All Scheduled Commercial Banks (ASCBs) recorded the highest absolute growth in both deposits and credit since 1951-52. Deposits surged by Rs 15.7 lakh crore, while credit grew by Rs 17.8 lakh crore, pushing the incremental Credit-Deposit (CD) Ratio to 113 percent. This momentum continued into FY24, with deposits rising by Rs 24.3 lakh crore and credit by Rs 27.5 lakh crore.

Contrary to the narrative of a deposit slowdown, the data reveals that since FY22, incremental deposit growth has actually outpaced credit growth, with deposits increasing by Rs 61 trillion compared to Rs 59 trillion in credit.

As the report notes, "Decadal deposits have expanded by a sharp 2.75 times, while decadal credit has grown by 2.8 times."

SBI PO Mains: Essay Writing for Descriptive Section 2023

essay on sbi bank

SBI PO Mains 2023 – The SBI PO descriptive section for 2023 will test you on two aspects only – Essay Writing & Letter writing. Previously P récis , Comprehension, and Paragraph writing were also a part. In today’s article, we will take a closer look at how to approach Essay Writing.

What should an Essay comprise of?

An essay is nothing but a short piece of writing on a particular topic. What sets an essay apart is not just being error-free in terms of grammar and spelling but also the structure and flow of ideas in the essay. A basic but ideal structure to follow is:-

1) Introduction:- This should contain a brief introduction of the topic with an explain the background of the topic. Use this section also to briefly mention your view on the topic before elaborating on that in the body paragraphs.

2) Body Paragraphs:- The body paragraphs (or the middle paragraphs) are used to present one’s point of view on the subject in a detailed manner.  You should restrict the number of paragraphs here to 2 or 3. The purpose of the body is to list in detail the examples that support your view. It is always advised to put forth your strongest argument first followed by the second strongest one and so on.  Each paragraph should contain one idea and sentences supporting it.

3) Conclusion:- The conclusion is the place to restate the main argument/view you made by showing the connections made between the different points in your essay. However, one should not use the same words to do so. The conclusion should also not be a place to introduce any new idea or thought but just a summary of your main argument using some of the strongest evidence supporting it.

 Plan Before You Type:-

Although it may seem like a waste of time, it is important to spend a few minutes to first plan and think about what you are writing instead of immediately writing. If you have 15 minutes for one essay, spending about 5 minutes on planning your essay can save a lot of time on thinking while you type. Most people who don’t plan before writing tend to get stuck in the middle or run out of ideas and are forced to think after writing a portion of the essay. This will hamper the flow and structure of your essay if you try to generate ideas while typing.

Spend a few minutes outlining the points you want to make. Make rough points on the introduction, the stance you are taking along with supporting arguments. Make sure you have your sequence with the strongest arguments first and then the remaining arguments.

DOs and DONTs:-

  • Make a time strategy while you practice. For eg: If it’s 15 minutes for one essay, then have 5 -7- 3 plans where you spend 5 minutes planning, 8 minutes typing, and then 2 minutes reading through the final essay to eliminate any grammatical or spelling errors. Make sure you do get the time to read and check for any errors. You can tweak the time-break up and choose one that works for you.
  • Stick to the word limit provided. If no word limit is provided, try to limit your essay to around 250-300 words.
  • Avoid using colloquial, slang, or SMS ‘lingo’ while you type. No using of “I’m”, “wat”, “thx”,”ASAP”, “gr8” etc. or use of informal language such as ‘veggies’ instead of vegetables, ‘Kids’ instead of Children, ‘Anyways’ instead of Nevertheless etc.
  • Use simple language. Even if your vocabulary is very strong, use words and sentences that you believe most of the readers will understand. No extra points are given for using difficult words that very few understand. In fact, it can be detrimental. For eg: “The deleterious effects of smoking…. ” vs ” The harmful effects of smoking… “
  • Do NOT use “I think…”, “I feel… ” , “In my opinion” etc. Avoid the use of first-person and second-person pronouns throughout the essay.
  • Do NOT make broad generalizations such as “Everyone knows that Narendra Modi is a good Prime Minister”. Instead one could say that “Several people believe that Narendra Modi is a good Prime Minister” and this statement can be supported by the text in the essay.

SBI’s new chief Setty wants his bank to grow into the ‘Best Bank’ in India

Believes in finding a firm foothold before taking the next step.

State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty

State Bank of India ’s new Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty believes in finding a firm foothold before taking the next step, even as he wants his Bank to grow into the “Best Bank” in the country.

Recollecting lessons from his school days in his village in Andhra Pradesh, Setty, who took charge of India’s largest Bank on Wednesday, noted that when the academic year began with the monsoon rains, the first lesson for the new students wasn’t from a text book, but a practical one imparted by senior students or many times by the teachers themselves.

“...Our initial, unforgettable lesson was to master the art of walking on the slippery bunds bordering the muddy fields without skidding or losing balance. We were told to... find a firm foothold before taking the next step. This simple yet crucial technique ensured we could make our way safely, step by cautious step...”

Today, as I embark on this new voyage as your Chairman, I realise that I am not the same person i was when i started. Nor is our Bank. We have both grown, adapted and transformed,” he said in a communication to his colleagues.

Setty took charge from Dinesh Kumar Khara, who helmed the India’s largest Bank from October 7, 2020 to August 27, 2024.

Recognising the contributions of his predecessors, who with help from all employees laid a strong foundation for the Bank, Setty said the Bank now proudly serves over 50 crore customers and has market leadership posiiton across products. Further, the Bank has achieved 1 per cent return on assets on arguably the largest balance sheet in the country.

SBI’s new chief emphasised that: “It is now our turn to build on this foundation, to grow SBI into the “Best Bank” in the country. We have to strive to become the most valued financial institution, increase our net profit to reach new milestones, reinforce our image as the Banker to every Indian, touching lives all-around, achieve service excellence, strategic leadership and be an employer of choice.”

Setty joined the Board of SBI as Managing Director in January 2020 and headed Retail & Digital Banking vertical from year 2020 till 2022 and International Banking, Global Markets & Technology portfolio of the Bank thereafter. He has also been heading various task forces/committees formed by the Government of India

In his last quarterly financial results meet on August 3, Khara said the Bank’s cumulative net profit in the last four years, at ₹1.63 lakh crore, is more than what it earned in the last 64 years.

“When I assumed office (in October 2020), our annual profit was ₹40,000 crore. Now, the quarterly profit is ₹17,000 crore.”

“Sharp focus in terms of quality of advances.... shoring up of other income. These are some of the factors that helped us,” Khara said.

SBI Raises Rs 7,500 Crore Via Tier-II Bond Issue at 7.42%

The State Bank of India raised Rs 7,500 crore through the issue of Tier-II bonds maturing in 15 years at a 7.42% coupon, the lender said in a media statement on Wednesday.

The coupon rate was largely in line with the market's expectations of around 7.35-7.40%.

Last week, NDTV Profit exclusively reported that the state-owned bank will tap the bond market with a Tier II bond issue this week.

The 15-year bond issue carries a call option after 10 years from the date of allotment. The state-owned bank received 70 bids worth Rs 8,895 crore at a coupon range of 7.25–7.50%, according to a bid book accessed by NDTV Profit.

The bank saw strong demand for its Tier II bond issue from pension funds, provident funds, mutual funds and other banks, it said in a statement. The bonds were rated 'AAA' by ICRA and India Ratings & Research.

Tier-II bonds are a part of a bank's borrowing mix with less risk than Tier-I bonds in the event of a default. Tier-II bonds are considered subordinated debt because they do not have the first claim on assets in the event of bank liquidation.

The last time SBI raised funds through a Tier II bond issue was in late 2023, when it mopped up Rs 10,000 crore through a 15-year bond at a coupon of 7.81%.

So far this fiscal, SBI has raised Rs 20,000 crore through two tranches of infrastructure bonds.

At the Global Fintech Fest, SBI Managing Director Ashwini Kumar Tewari told NDTV Profit that banks are issuing infrastructure bonds to meet their liabilities, and that it is helping the bank with deposit growth.

Mastering the essay section requires a combination of strategic thinking, concise expression, and an in-depth understanding of diverse topics. This study guide aims to provide comprehensive insights and strategies to conquer the SBI PO 2023 Descriptive English Paper.

Understanding the SBI PO Descriptive English Paper:

The Descriptive English Paper is a critical component of the SBI PO exam, evaluating candidates on their ability to articulate thoughts, present coherent arguments, and communicate effectively. It typically consists of essay writing and letter writing, with a focus on assessing writing skills in a time-constrained environment.

**1. Decoding the Essay Section:

*a. Understanding the Essay Prompt: Start by thoroughly understanding the essay prompt. Identify key words that define the theme and scope of the essay. This initial analysis is crucial for framing a focused and relevant response.

*b. Brainstorming Ideas: Take a few minutes to brainstorm ideas related to the essay topic. Jot down key points, arguments, or examples that can be incorporated into your essay. This process helps in organizing thoughts before delving into the writing process.

*c. Crafting a Clear Thesis Statement: Formulate a clear and concise thesis statement in the introduction. This statement serves as the main argument of your essay and provides a roadmap for both you and the reader.

**2. Structuring Your Essay:

*a. Engaging Introduction: Craft an engaging introduction that immediately captures the examiner’s attention. Consider starting with a thought-provoking question, a relevant quote, or a striking fact related to the essay topic.

*b. Well-Structured Body Paragraphs: Divide your essay into well-structured paragraphs, each dedicated to a specific point or argument. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence and provide supporting evidence or examples to strengthen your points.

*c. Effective Argumentation: Each paragraph should contribute to the overall argument of your essay. Present your ideas logically and support them with relevant evidence. Anticipate counterarguments and address them to strengthen the persuasiveness of your essay.

*d. Language Precision: Choose your words carefully to convey ideas precisely. A varied and sophisticated vocabulary adds depth to your writing. However, clarity should not be sacrificed for complexity.

*e. Concluding Thoughts: Summarize your main points in the conclusion , reinforcing your thesis without introducing new ideas. Conclude with a thought-provoking or impactful statement that leaves a lasting impression.

**3. Time Management:

*a. Effective Planning: Allocate a specific amount of time for planning before you start writing. This helps in organizing your thoughts and ensures a coherent and well-structured essay.

*b. Timed Writing Practice: Incorporate timed writing practice into your preparation routine. Simulate exam conditions to familiarize yourself with the pressure and time constraints of the actual exam.

**4. Continuous Practice:

*a. Regular Essay Writing Practice: Engage in regular essay writing practice on a variety of topics. This not only enhances your writing skills but also exposes you to different themes that may appear in the exam.

*b. Self-Revision: After completing each practice essay, review and revise your work. Look for areas where you can enhance clarity, strengthen arguments, or improve language use. Continuous refinement is key to mastery.

**5. Letter Writing Essentials:

*a. Understand the Purpose: Differentiate between formal and informal letter formats. Clearly state the purpose of the letter and maintain relevance throughout.

*b. Salutations and Closings: Pay attention to appropriate salutations and closings based on the type of letter (formal or informal). This contributes to the overall tone of the letter.

*c. Clarity and Conciseness: Keep your language clear and concise. Avoid unnecessary details and get straight to the point. Clarity is crucial in effective letter writing.

*d. Politeness and Professionalism: Maintain a polite and professional tone, especially in formal letters. This contributes to the overall effectiveness of your communication.

**6. Vocabulary Enhancement and Grammar Proficiency:

*a. Daily Word Lists: Dedicate time each day to learn new words and their usage. A rich vocabulary adds depth to your writing.

*b. Grammar Refresher: Brush up on essential grammar rules. Pay attention to common pitfalls such as subject-verb agreement, tenses, and punctuation.

**7. Stay Informed about Current Affairs:

*a. Read Widely: Stay updated on current affairs by reading newspapers, magazines, and online sources. Many SBI PO essay topics are related to current events, and being well-informed adds depth to your responses.

*b. Critical Analysis of Current Issues: Develop the ability to critically analyze current issues. Understand the multiple perspectives surrounding a topic and use this knowledge to present a well-informed and nuanced viewpoint in your essay.

**8. Seek Feedback:

*a. Peer Reviews: Engage in peer review sessions with fellow aspirants. Constructive feedback from peers provides fresh insights and helps in identifying areas for improvement.

*b. Mentor Guidance: If possible, seek guidance from mentors or teachers. Their experience and expertise can offer valuable tips and strategies to enhance your essay writing skills.

In conclusion, mastering the SBI PO 2023 essay and conquering the Descriptive English Paper require a comprehensive approach that includes strategic thinking, effective structuring, time management, continuous practice, and a strong command of language. By incorporating these strategies into your preparation, you can approach the essay section with confidence, showcasing your ability to articulate thoughts effectively and persuasively in the competitive landscape of the SBI PO exam.
