Amazon Prime Video’s first-ever Telugu original Ammu has created a good buzz with its teasers. It has been released today. Let’s see how the movie is.

Ammu (Aishwarya Lekshmi), ties the knot with Ravindranath (Naveen Chandra), a police officer. As days pass by, Ravindranath abuses Ammu both physically and mentally. A helpless Ammu bears everything until she meets a criminal named Prabhu (Bobby Simha) and comes up with a plan to get free from her husband. What is that plan? Why did she seek Prabhu’s help? Did she succeed? That forms the story.

Plus Points

The director Charukesh Sekar takes a good story that is relatable to the majority of people in our society. Alongside, he narrates it in a decent manner. Aishwarya Lekshmi is the show stealer of Ammu. She fits the role well and her performance as a helpless housewife who faces domestic violence is solid. Be it her emotions or the courage she faces to deal with her husband, Lakshmi aces it.

Naveen Chandra delivers his finest performance as an egoistic and sadistic husband, who thinks it is his right to control his wife. The variations he showed in many scenes make the audience know what a capable actor he is. Bobby Simha gets a neat role again and he excels with his subtle performance.

Ammu has some hard-hitting dialogues and thanks to Padmavathi Malladi for penning such wonderful lines. Satya, Prem Sagar, and Raghu Babu give their best in their supporting roles. The backdrop of the film is quite impressive.

Minus Points

The first half is decent but some unnecessary lag in the first half down the tempo. Some repeated scenes could have been trimmed to make the film a crisp one. Writing a few emotional scenes for Bobby Simha’s character could have made the film more engaging for the audience.

Bobby Simha’s role is brought in to help the heroine. A proper reason should have been showcased for him to help the heroine. The story is a bit predictable and runs on a familiar thread for the most part.

Technical Aspects

Charukesh Sekar scores good marks as a director than a writer. He makes Ammu a watchable film by writing a neat screenplay. Padmavathi Malladi needs to be appreciated for writing thought-provoking dialogues. The cinematography and music are fine, and the editing could have been crisp. The production design, camera work, and gritty visuals hold your attention.

On the whole, Ammu is a film that showcases the domestic violence against women in our society. Impeccable performances by Aishwarya Lekshmi and Naveen Chandra are praiseworthy and major assets of the film. Barring a few lags in the first half and a predictable storyline, the film is decent and can be streamed without any second thought.

Aishwarya Lekshmi, unlike many of her contemporaries, has a constant urge to pick scripts that matter. Courtesy that, she is truly becoming a force to reckon with. After bankrolling Sai Pallavi-starrer Gargi, unarguably one of the best films of the year, she chose to headline debutant Charukesh Sekar’s Ammu – a chilling thriller about a domestic abuse survivor standing up for herself. Cut from the same cloth as films such Thappad and 47 Naatkal, Aishwarya’s Ammu is a very familiar tale of domestic abuse of a helpless wife but thankfully it takes a very interesting detour to present a refreshing end. Aishwarya Lekshmi plays Ammu. The film opens with a conversation between a young girl and Ammu, who is about to marry her neighbor Ravi (Naveen Chandra), who works as a police inspector. The little girl asks Ammu if she really likes Ravi, and if she’s ready for marriage. Ammu says she thinks she knows him and goes on to ask the girl why she would ask such a question.

In what’s one of the best scenes of the movie, Ravi’s character is beautifully introduced and it doesn't take much time for the viewers to learn about his true colors. Ammu’s world starts to crumble when she learns about Ravi’s abusive and authoritative behavior. The rest of the story is about how Ammu deals with domestic violence and whether she succeeds in teaching her husband a lesson.

Ammu will definitely be one of the most important films of this year. It takes a very relevant issue that has been a topic of discussion for a long time and gives it a very interesting spin with the way it chooses to end the film. One could think of such a story and list down all the possible outcomes but this film’s ending would still leave you surprised. Instead of playing out like an awareness film on domestic abuse, Ammu touches upon crucial aspects that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to a woman’s involvement in a marriage. In one of the film’s most crucial scenes, Ammu cries her heart out to her mother and argues about being married so early. The mother jokingly replies, ‘you’re already 25’. In the subsequent scene, when Ammu opens up to her mother about Ravi turning abusive, she quotes the examples of her father and defends it by saying men have no other means to take out their anger and stress.

The film beautifully talks about how women are conditioned to domestic abuse across generations and most have even accepted it as a way of life. There’s also a beautiful scene about a woman’s right to abortion, and it couldn’t have come at a more fitting time than now when the Supreme Court affirmed women's right to abortion in India.

It is quite brave of Aishwarya to headline such a project at a time when she can easily get away by playing the quintessential heroine. It’s as though she wants to make a statement with her films. Therefore, Aishwarya is carefully picking projects that rise above the usual definition of entertainment. As the helpless wife trying to muster courage to find a way out of her abusive marriage, Aishwarya plays her part so well. This is one of her best performances. It is equally gutsy of Naveen Chandra to take up this character and he plays the menacing husband so convincingly. Bobby Simhaa shines in a crucial cameo. Ammu began streaming on Prime Video from October 19.

Ammu Is A Flawed Yet Insightful Drama

Ammu , Amazon Prime’s first Telugu original, is fabulously directed and is replete with fine performances, particularly its central, accomplished turn by Aishwarya Lekshmi . For the duration of its first half, I couldn’t help but compare it with The Great Indian Kitchen , sometimes favorably, sometimes not. In its second half, you realise that isn’t exactly the kind of film it's trying to be. And it is exactly when the film takes this turn that the film begins to soar.

We open with a scene in Ammu’s house — the electricity seems to have gone out and candles are being lit to enable a pelli choopulu. The prospective groom, Ravindranath (Naveen Chandra) is her neighbor — a tall, handsome, and confident man beginning his career as a police officer. Yet, there’s something strange about how wide his eyes are when he’s smiling. There’s a hint of red in them — but is it a play of the makeshift light? We don’t see him as clearly as we’d like to, and before we can catch a good look, the wedding is done and consummated. There is love in this marriage. He holds her by the waist and lifts her, making her spill her coffee. She has to wipe the floor after this, ofcourse, but that’s every marriage, isn’t it? Isn’t it?

When he comes across victims of domestic abuse and molestation, he suggests that the local police station begin a volunteer program to monitor the streets and aid women in need. And yet, he’s annoyed when his wife doesn’t bring his lunch to the police station on time. Slowly, we discover that the boundary between the patriarchally defined gender roles is important to this man — and that he will guard it ferociously. It is important to him to feel like a man, but it is perhaps more important to be seen as a man.

We discover he’s capable of subtle emotional manipulation and gaslighting— when he blows the lid with his wife, he gifts money to her parents. In a riveting, magnificently directed scene, he hits her for the first time — and then immediately holds her, consoling her with an outpouring of affection. He does this not out of regret, but because he’s terrified that he will be seen for what he is, when what he wants to be seen as is man — paternal, provider, protector. Not a pathetic monster. Naveen Chandra has suggested this kind of menace before, but this is his meatiest role, and he does it justice.

It is after this that the film falters for a stretch — Ammu is conflicted, dealing with the rift between the two men within her husband — the lover she imagines really exists, and the monster. She thinks she can get rid of the latter when she showers him with love. But because we know this is a doomed endeavor, the escalation of abuse becomes difficult to sit through. And yet, one can’t help but recognise the abuse — we have all heard of it somewhere, socially, or in the news. The Great Indian Kitchen (2021) dissected tradition to expose oppressive patriarchy — Ammu doesn’t quite do this, and it is possible most will walk away from the film saying “Oh yes, bad men like that exist, we’ve heard of them”, rather than examine the air they breathe and the water they drink for signs of toxicity.

When she encounters Prabhu, a murder convict, at the police station, Ammu begins to see a way out, and this is when the film becomes an effective, rooted thriller after the unevenness of the preceding drama. Bobby Simha is wonderful as Prabhu, and the writing in this stretch is also insightful — when Ravikanth tells Bobby to clean toilets in exchange for going easy on him, the film suggests that domestic abuse and class/caste-based violence both emanate from the same entitled privileged urge to dehumanise, to dominate, to take pleasure in the subservience and the reduction of another. The burgeoning bond between Ammu and Prabhu is a reprieve from the ugliness of the central relationship, as are the couple of scenes with frequent comic actor, Raghu Babu.

Ammu , creatively produced by Karthik Subbaraj, is a bold choice by Prime Video for its first Telugu Original. There is a perception among filmmakers and producers that the Telugu audience doesn’t appreciate stark reality —that it craves escapism. It is precisely for this reason that Ye Maaya Chesave (2010), the Telugu version of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya (2010) ends with Jessie and Karthik together. But the success of films like Care of Kancharapalem (2018) has exposed that perception for what it is — a lie.

Ammu is an imperfect film in which there is a lot to admire, not least its Ilaiyaraaja-evoking orchestral music (Bharath Sankar), and its intricate, naturalistically lit cinematography (Apoorva Anil Shaligram), but one gets the feeling that writer-director Charukesh Sekar’s best work still lies ahead of him.

There’s a popular quote (most recognised from The Usual Suspects ) that goes like this, “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”

Not sure about the devil’s existence — maybe the quote is true — but it does serve as an allegory on the predatory behaviour that is prevalent among controlling, toxic masculine men in our society. Men, like Naveen Chandra’s character Ravindranath in Ammu , might appear like white knights to society, hence nobody ever suspects that their capes are only meant to conceal the blood on their hands.

A blatant, up-close report on such behavioural patterns and the cycle of abuse at the hands of such men are few of the many laudable aspects of director Charukesh Sekar's film. The very first introductory sequence of the film manages to tell a lot. We see the hands of a woman light up candles one by one; the light eventually reveals her to be Ammu (Aishwarya Lekshmi), a 25-year-old getting ready to meet her groom, Ravindranath. Like the flame shining bright on her glowing face, the resilience, love, and hope that she has in her heart, do add up to her beauty. She wouldn't have known then that she would go on to spread that spark of resilience to many around her.

Ravi becomes a dotting husband to Ammu, and she thanks the stars for such a loving partner. From the society's point of view, Ravi is a dutiful cop who cares about the well-being of the citizens. As one might expect, things go south and this happens rather out of the blue. One day, Ammu forgets to take Ravi's lunch to the police station — she isn't aware that it was expected of her — and Ravi takes this to heart. How did such a loving man turn into this, you would wonder, but this only adds up to how cleverly manipulative someone like Ravi can be. It works because this is how rapidly the world seems to have changed for Ammu as well, and this is a film that is meant to make one look from the eyes of the victim and not the perpetrator. More such instances follow, and she fails to take note of the red flags. Things escalate swiftly, and Ravi begins to physically assault Ammu.

Despite progressing like a slow-burn drama that might instantly remind one of The Great Indian Kitchen , the film touches on many pivotal points through some effective dialogues and scene-writing. Be it the conversation between Ammu and her mother, the scene featuring Raghu Babu in which Ammu holds onto the idea that her love can change her husband, the dialogue that speaks for the right a woman holds over her body, or the way Ammu tells a bunch of policewomen that they forgot to investigate her house and that she is being abused... the film gives us plenty to ponder about. Further, it infuriates us to see how helpless Ammu's situation turns out to be, and that there are few options available.

But the biggest discrepancy comes in how Charukesh chooses to give a resolution. A convict on parole named Prabhu (Simha) is used as a tool to attain this, and these portions turn out to be rather unconvincing. We know little about Prabhu other than the fact that he killed two people, that he is on parole to attend her sister's wedding, and that he regrets the crimes he committed. However, is that truly enough for us to take his quest seriously? Also, for a film that was painting a realistic portrait of abuse, such gimmicky turns of events don't work in its favour.

Despite the shortcomings though, Ammu manages to move you, and Aishwarya Lekshmi's performance deserves a lot of credit for it, as she eases through even the most vulnerable of moments. Take note of how your heart strings tug during a close-up that shows her applying make-up over her wounds. Similarly, Naveen delivers quite an effective performance as Ravi; for instance, the scene where he pulls off a tremble on his cheeks when Ammu asks him a yes or no question.

Despite its poor third act, the writing of the first two is such that you might still find yourself searching for answers and closure. For invoking that in us, and for everything else it stands for, Ammu is a win.

ప్రస్తుతం థియేటర్‌తో పాటు ఓటీటీకీ సమ ప్రాధాన్యం ఉంది. అయితే, మంచి కాన్సెప్ట్‌ కలిగిన చిన్న చిత్రాలు థియేటర్‌లో చూసే పరిస్థితి క్రమంగా తగ్గుతోంది. భారీ బడ్జెట్‌, గ్రాఫిక్స్‌, స్టార్‌హీరోల సినిమాలు మాత్రమే థియేటర్‌లో చూసేందుకు ప్రేక్షకులు ఆసక్తి చూపిస్తున్నారు. ఈ క్రమంలో చిన్న సినిమాలకు మంచి వేదికగా ఓటీటీ నిలిచింది. గృహహింస అనే చిన్న ఎలిమెంట్‌తో ఓటీటీలో విడుదలైన చిత్రం ‘అమ్ము’. చారుకేష్ శేఖర్‌ దీన్ని తెరకెక్కించారు. తాజాగా అమెజాన్‌ ప్రైమ్‌లో విడుదలై ఈ సినిమలా ఎలా ఉంది? దర్శకుడు ఈ పాయింట్‌ను ఎలా చూపించారు?

కథేంటంటే: అమ్ము తల్లిదండ్రులకు ఒక్కగానొక్క కూతురు. పక్కింటి స్నేహితుల కుమారుడైన సీఐ రవీంద్రనాథ్‌కు ఇచ్చి పెళ్లి చేస్తారు. పెళ్లయిన కొత్తలో ఇద్దరూ చిలకా-గోరింకల్లా ఆనందంగా ఉంటారు. ఓ సంఘటనతో రవిలోని అసలు రూపం బయటపడుతుంది. అప్పటి నుంచి అమ్మును హింసిస్తుంటాడు రవి. తన వ్యవహారశైలి వల్లే రవి అలా ప్రవర్తిస్తున్నాడు అమ్ము బాదపడుతూ ఉంటుంది. అయినా కూడా రవిలో ఎలాంటి మార్పూ రాదు. ఎన్ని రకాలుగా భర్తను ఆనందింపజేయడానికి ప్రయత్నించినా ఫలితం లేకుండా పోతుంది. అప్పుడు అమ్ము ఏం చేసింది? ఎలాంటి నిర్ణయం తీసుకుంది? రవికి ఎలా గుణపాఠం చెప్పింది అన్నది చిత్ర కథ!

ఎలా ఉందంటే: అమ్ము కేవలం ఆమె కథ మాత్రమే కాదు, ఈ ప్రపంచంలో గృహహింస ఎదుర్కొంటున్న ఎంతో మంది మహిళల ఆవేదన. ఈ ప్రపంచంలో ఎంత పెద్ద కంపెనీనైనా, వేల మంది ఉద్యోగులనైనా పర్యవేక్షిస్తూ చక్కగా బాధ్యతలు నిర్వర్తించవచ్చు కానీ, నలుగురున్న కుటుంబాన్ని ఎలాంటి ఇబ్బంది లేకుండా చేయగల సమర్థత కలిగిన ఏకైక వ్యక్తి మహిళ మాత్రమే. భర్తకు భార్యగా, పిల్లలకు తల్లిగా, అత్తమామలకు కోడలిగా ఉంటూ తన తల్లిదండ్రుల గురించి కూడా ఆలోచించగలిగే శక్తి కేవలం మహిళలకు మాత్రమే ఉందంటే అతిశయోక్తి కాదు. అలాంటి నారీ శక్తి నేటికీ గృహహింస ఎదుర్కొవాల్సిన పరిస్థితి ఉంది. పైగా తాను ఎదుర్కొంటున్న శారీరక, మానసిక క్షోభను బయటకు చెప్పుకోలేని పరిస్థితి. ‘ఆయన నన్ను కొట్టారమ్మా..’ అంటే అమ్ము తల్లి ‘ఎందుకే నువ్వేం చేశావు’ అంటుంది. ఈ ఒక్క డైలాగ్‌ చాలు ఇప్పటికీ తప్పు మహిళవైపు నుంచే జరిగి ఉంటుందని ఆలోచిస్తున్నారన్న విషయం అర్థమవుతుంది. అలాంటి చిన్న ఎలిమెంట్‌తో ‘అమ్ము’ను తెరకెక్కించడంలో విజయం సాధించారు దర్శకుడు చారుకేశ్‌ శేఖర్‌.

పొరుగింటి కుర్రాడైన రవితో అమ్ము వివాహం, ఇద్దరూ సరదాగా గడపటం తదితర సన్నివేశాలతో నెమ్మదిగా కథలోకి తీసుకెళ్లే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు దర్శకుడు. ఆ తర్వాత చిన్న చిన్న విషయాలకే అమ్మును చూసి, రవి చిరాకు పడటం, అది నెమ్మదిగా పెరిగి పెద్దదవుతూ చేయి చేసుకోవడం వరకూ వెళ్తుంది. చిన్న చిన్న కారణాలకు కూడా అమ్మును విమర్శిస్తూ ఆమెపై దాడి చేయటం నిత్యకృత్యం అవుతుంది. ఇలా ఒక సాధారణ కుటుంబంలో మహిళ ఎదుర్కొంటున్న ఇబ్బందులను చూపించే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు. ఎప్పుడైతే తనపై మాత్రమే ఇలాంటి ఘటనలు జరగకుండా ఎదురు తిరగాలని అమ్ము నిశ్చయించుకుంటోందో అప్పటి నుంచి రవి-అమ్ముల మధ్య అసలైన నాటకీయత ప్రారంభమవుతుంది. ఆయా సన్నివేశాలను కూడా చక్కగా తెరకెక్కించాడు దర్శకుడు. అయితే, సన్నివేశాలు కాస్త సుదీర్ఘంగా సాగినట్లు అనిపిస్తాయి. ప్రభు పాత్రలో బాబీ సింహా రాకతో సినిమా మరింత ఆసక్తికరంగా మారుతుంది. చివరకు ఎవరిపై ఎవరు గెలిచారన్నది ఓటీటీల చూసి తెలుసుకోవాల్సిందే. ఈ వీకెండ్‌లో ఒక డిఫరెంట్‌ సోషల్‌ డ్రామా చూడాలనుకుంటే ‘అమ్ము’ అమెజాన్‌ ప్రైమ్‌లో ఉంది.

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే: అమ్ము పాత్రలో తన సహజ నటనతో ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మి ఆకట్టుకున్నారు. భర్త పెట్టే హింసలను భరించే, చివరకు వాటిపై పోరాటం చేసి మహిళగా ఒదిగిపోయారు. పురుషాహంకారం, శాడిజం ఉన్న వ్యక్తిగా నవీనచంద్ర చాలా బాగా నటించారు. ఆయన అలాంటి నటించడం వల్లే సన్నివేశాలు మరింత బలంగా పండాయి. బాబీ సింహా పాత్ర, ఆయన నేపథ్యంలో వచ్చే సన్నివేశాలు ఎమోషనల్‌గా సాగుతాయి. మిగిలిన నటీనటుల నటన పర్వాలేదు. సాంకేతికంగా సినిమా ఓకే. మ్యూజిక్, సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ, నిర్మాణ విలువలు బాగున్నాయి. ఎడిటింగ్‌పై ఇంకాస్త దృష్టి పెట్టి ఉంటే బాగుండేది. ఓటీటీలో రిపీటెడ్‌ సీన్స్‌ అనిపిస్తే, ప్రేక్షకులు భరించే పరిస్థితి ఉండదు. ఇక పద్మావతి మల్లాది డైలాగ్స్ సినిమాకి అదనపు ఆకర్షణ తెచ్చాయి. దర్శకుడు చారుకేష్ శేఖర్ తాను చెప్పాలనుకున్న పాయింట్‌ చెప్పడంలో సఫలమయ్యారు.

Ammu Movie Review: An effectual portrayal about the fight for resilience against abuse

Ammu opens with the shot of the titular character (Aishwarya Lekshmi) being asked by a young girl the reason she wants to marry her neighbour. And just like any other woman in an arranged marriage setup, we see Ammu not having a solid answer. Of course, it is a marriage with consent, but Ammu is oblivious about the man she will be betrothed to in a few moments. Instead, she playfully questions the girl about him. Even if we don’t see the child’s face who finds Ammu's future husband “scary”, it hints at the eerie tale of abuse and misogyny that befalls Ammu in her marital life.

All goes well for the newly married Ammu and her husband/circle inspector Ravindranath (Naveen Chandra) until instances of cold behaviour fuelled by chauvinism begin from Ravi’s side. Ammu, being a diligent, and dutiful wife, doesn’t mind the many red flags about Ravi that comes her way. Instances like Ravi’s reluctance to live off his wife’s earnings may come across as a normal conversation between a couple in this patriarchal world, but the film starts to cement its base with this problematic chauvinism. Ammu does not make the mistake of introducing us to the perils of chauvinism all at once. Instead, it talks about the unchecked passive aggression that goes on to be something even viler. It is easy to paint men as straightforward misogynists, but the film takes time to sculpt Ravi’s character. He manifests the very reality of men who are conceived progressive and preach accommodative ideas on the outside while being covert bigots within closed doors. A parallel track of Ravi being a dutiful cop ensuring women’s safety outside, while being an abusive husband, sums up the hypocrisy of men preaching equality for every woman, except for the ones at their homes.

Ammu’s brilliance in storytelling comes in the form of its slow-burn drama that takes you through the mind of the survivor rather than the abuser. Director Charukesh Sekar builds up the narrative by setting up scenes that individually contribute to a wholesome drama. There is one instance of Ammu relapsing to the pain of her loneliness. It’s not only effective because it readies you to understand the boiling point that Ammu reaches psychologically, but also because it captures the smallest moments where trauma can take over an individual. The film also deviates from the lazy route of making her turn a phoenix from the ashes overnight. Instead, the first half is carefully set up to let you understand the psyche of Ammu. The background score definitely helps in elevating these instances to give it a very terrifying ambiance. There is also a beautiful conversation between Ammu and her mother (Maala Parvathi) about the generational passing down of abuse. It raises the most pertinent question when Ammu asks, “Even if I did something, is it okay for him to slap me?”

The film also touches upon the by-products of abuse. The end of every instance of physical abuse is followed by a manipulation of apology. The value of the scenes beautifully culminates in portraying the agony of mental torture, which is generally overlooked for physical pain. Another idea that is effectively communicated in Ammu is the woman's right over her body and reproductive nature. When she isn’t ready to beget a child yet, contrary to her husband's choice, the film stages an intense scene where Ammu expresses how her right to decide over her body has been snatched away, which also leads her to break down completely for the first time in front of her known circle.

However, Ammu seems to slip in the second half when she teams up with an unlikely ally to take down her husband. While the plot featuring Bobby Simha's Prabhu tries to sit well with the story, it also results in a lull in the screenplay. Ammu gets a little too stretchy and soggy in the latter half, and even the cat-and-mouse chase between Ammu and Ravi becomes a little drab. We also don’t get properly acquainted with Prabhu's life either, and a bit more of fleshing out of the character would have worked in the film's favour. Ammu also seems to be in a hurry to wrap things up, and it feels wrong especially after going down the slow-burn route in the first half.

A little more exploration into the mind of Ammu would have strengthened this film and made it an even more compelling narrative about women's empowerment. Nevertheless, nothing can take away the sheer strength it radiates when Ammu meets her husband eye-to-eye in the finale when the latter is cornered in all possible ways. Ammu is a film that can make many squirm with uneasiness, but it will definitely give a sense of hope and representation to others.

Charukesh sekar's 'ammu', on amazon prime video, with aishwarya lekshmi and naveen chandra, is a partly effective domestic-abuse drama.

Charukesh Sekar's Ammu opens with an arranged marriage scenario. Ammu (Aishwarya Lekshmi) is brought in front of Ravi (Naveen Chandra) and his family. There are no doubts about the alliance, as the families live in the same neighbourhood and know of each other. It's just a formality. Ravi's mother tells Ammu to behave as she normally would. But something about the occasion makes Ammu more subdued than she'd usually be. Earlier, she wondered whether she liked Ravi. The answer was tentative. "I think so," she says. Now, the elders ask the couple-to-be to stand next to each other. She still has an "I think so" look. In a startling cut, we move from this scenario to Ammu and Naveen after marriage, after they've just had sex. Like many scenes in the film, this is reflected in a mirror, which acts as a distancing device. What we are seeing is real – and yet a lie.

At first, everything is okay, and it doesn't take long for Ammu to go from "I think so" to "I love you". And then, the beatings begin. Ravi is a cop who advises an abused woman who comes to his station to be strong. And yet, at home, he cannot shake off his patriarchy. When Ammu asks for something as innocent as a sewing machine, he says a man should not live off his wife's earnings. Soon, we discover he is also a man who wants lunch to be brought to the station. And it becomes worse. Every time he crosses the line, he says sorry. But soon the word becomes meaningless. Ammu talks to her mother about this. It's a lovely little scene that makes us see that the mother may be more progressive than the daughter.

Why does Ammu stay? Why doesn't she just walk out? These are easy questions to ask, but life for the abused is not always that easy. One of the problems with the screenplay is the over-reliance on dialogue to tell us what Ammu is feeling, what's going on inside her head. "How did I become this person?" That sort of thing. It becomes clumsy after a while, especially when you see how elegantly the film is crafted. (Apoorva Shaligram is the cinematographer.) There's a cut from Ammu in daylight, outside of home, to Ammu that same night, back at home. Her face is in the same profile, in the same position, in both frames. It's as though nothing has changed except time. She is back to where she was. Aishwarya Lekshmi is a little off in the big dramatic scenes, but she's wonderful at conveying small shifts of emotion with just a look or two.

The first half takes a long time to underline Ammu's situation – and the scenes, though effective, are fairly predictable. The real subversion occurs in the second half, where the tonality changes. Suddenly, we are in a film like the Alia Bhatt-starrer Darlings . Ammu doesn't just want out of the marriage. She also wants revenge. And with this plot point, the film goes rapidly downhill. Darlings was a dark comedy, and the fantasy-zone revenge aspect worked very well there. But here, the post-interval portions, where Bobby Simha appears as a killer, don't sit organically with what happened earlier. The director maintains the same gentle and tasteful tone, and Ammu's big decisions don't hit home as powerfully as they should. I came away wishing the risks in the conception, in the writing, in the very theme , had reflected in the execution.

His first review was for the Hindi film Dum, published on January 30, 2003, in the Madras Plus supplement of The Economic Times. He then started critiquing Tamil films in 2014 and did a review on the film Subramaniapuram, while also debuting as a writer in the unreleased rom-com Kadhal 2 Kalyanam. Furthermore, Baradwaj has authored two books - Conversations with Mani Ratnam, 2012, and A Journey Through Indian Cinema, 2014. In 2017, he joined Film Companion South and continued to show his prowess in critiquing for the next five years garnering a wide viewership and a fan following of his own before announcing to be a part of Galatta Media in March 2022.

ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మీ (Aishwarya Lekshmi), నవీన్ చంద్ర, బాబీ సింహ ప్రధాన పాత్రల్లో నటించిన సినిమా 'అమ్ము' (Ammu Movie). ప్రచార చిత్రాలు చూస్తే... భర్త చేతిలో హింసకు గురయ్యే భార్యగా ఐశ్వర్య లక్షి కనిపించారు. మరి, సినిమా (Ammu Review) ఎలా ఉంది? గృహ హింస నేపథ్యంలో ఎటువంటి సందేశం ఇచ్చారు?

కథ (Ammu Movie Story) : రవి... రవీంద్రనాథ్ (నవీన్ చంద్ర) పోలీస్ అధికారి. ఓ ఎస్సై. అమ్ము... అముద (ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మీ) అతడి పొరుగింటి అమ్మాయి. పెద్దలు ఇద్దరితో ఏడడుగులు వేయిస్తారు. పెళ్ళైన కొత్తలో అంతా బావుంది. భార్యను రవి బాగా చూసుకున్నాడు. కొన్ని రోజుల తర్వాత అతడి అసలు రంగు బయట పడింది. చిన్న చిన్న విషయాలకు భార్యపై కోప్పడటం, కొట్టడం మొదలు పెట్టాడు. భర్తను వదిలి, ఇల్లు విడిచి వెళ్లిపోవాలని అమ్ము అనుకుంటుంది. కానీ, వెళ్ళలేదు. ఎందుకు? తనను చిత్రహింసలకు గురి చేస్తున్న భర్తను భరించక తప్పదనుకుని సర్దుకుపోయిందా? లేదంటే ఏమైనా చేసిందా? రవి, అమ్ము దంపతుల మధ్య పెరోల్ మీద బయటకొచ్చిన హంతకుడు ప్రభు (బాబీ సింహ) ఎలా వచ్చాడు? ఆ తర్వాత ఏమైంది? అనేది సినిమా. 

విశ్లేషణ (Ammu Movie Review) : డొమెస్టిక్ వయలెన్స్... గృహ హింస... ఏ భాషలో చెప్పినా భావం ఒక్కటే! ఈ అంశం మీద హిందీలో తాప్సీ 'థప్పడ్', ఆలియా భట్ 'డార్లింగ్స్' చిత్రాలు వచ్చాయి. తెలుగులో గృహ హింస నేపథ్యంలో కొన్ని చిత్రాల్లో సన్నివేశాలు ఉన్నాయి. అయితే... గృహ హింస ప్రధానాంశంగా రూపొందిన చిత్రం 'అమ్ము' అని చెప్పాలి. ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉందనే విషయంలోకి వెళితే...

'మొగుడు అన్నాక కొడతాడు... భార్య భరించాలి, సర్దుకుపోవాలి' - మన సమాజంలో తరతరాల నుంచి నాటుకుపోయిన భావన ఇది. 

'ఒక మగాడు పెళ్ళాం మీద చెయ్యి ఎత్తకూడదు. అలా ఎత్తాడే అనుకో... వాడితో ఒక్క క్షణం కూడా పెళ్ళాం ఉండాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు' - ఇదీ 'అమ్ము'లో అమ్మాయితో తల్లి చెప్పే మాట!

తల్లి మాట విని భర్త కొట్టిన తర్వాత బ్యాగ్ సర్దుకుని అమ్మాయి వచ్చేస్తే 'అమ్ము' కథ ముప్పావుగంటలో ముగిసేది. కథలో అసలు విషయం ఇదేనని తెలిసిన తర్వాత చూసేటప్పుడు ఆసక్తి ఏముంటుంది? అనుకునే పాఠకులూ ఉండొచ్చు. 'అమ్ము'లో అసలు విషయం కంటే మించి బలమైన సంఘర్షణ ఉంది. అది మనల్ని చివరి వరకూ సినిమా చూసేలా చేస్తుంది. 

అమ్మ మాట విని ఆడపిల్ల బ్యాగ్ సర్దుకుని వచ్చేయడం అంత సులభం కాదనే విషయాన్ని 'అమ్ము'లో చూపించారు. అందుకు ఎన్నో అడ్డంకులు! కొన్నిసార్లు  భర్తకు భార్య భయపడితే... కొన్నిసార్లు బంధాన్ని నిలుపుకోవాలనే ఆలోచన, ప్రేమ అడ్డు గోడలు అవుతాయని సూటిగా, స్పష్టంగా చెప్పారు. అసలు విషయం చెప్పే క్రమంలో దర్శకుడు కొంత స్వేచ్ఛ తీసుకున్నారు. 

రవి పాత్రలో ఒక్కసారిగా వచ్చే మార్పు ఆశ్చర్యానికి గురి చేస్తే... పోలీసుల కళ్ళు గప్పి హంతకుడిని దాచడం అంత సులభమా? అనిపిస్తుంది. కథకు అనుకూలంగా కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలను దర్శకుడు రాసుకున్నారు. అవి పంటి కింద రాయిలా తగులుతాయి. భార్యను కొట్టి తర్వాత సారీ చెప్పి, మళ్ళీ కొట్టే  రవి లాంటి పాత్రలను ఇంతకు ముందు చూశాం కూడా! 'డార్లింగ్స్'లో విజయ్ వర్మ పాత్ర కూడా అలానే ఉంటుంది. అయితే... ఐశ్వర్య పాత్రను మలచిన విధానం కొత్తగా ఉంది. కథను ఆసక్తిగా ప్రారంభించిన దర్శకుడు... మొదటి గంట తర్వాత కొన్ని తప్పటడుగులు వేశారు. బాబీ సింహ పాత్ర, జైలు బయట అతని కోసం ధర్నా చేసే సన్నివేశాలు కథను కొంత సైడ్ ట్రాక్‌లోకి తీసుకు వెళ్లాయి. నిడివి పెంచాయి. మళ్ళీ ముగింపులో మెరుపు చూపించారు. కథ, కథనం కంటే కథలో అమ్ము పాత్ర తాలూకు సంఘర్షణ, సంభాషణలు ఎక్కువ ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. కథతో ప్రయాణించేలా చేస్తాయి. 

ఇల్లు, పోలీస్ స్టేషన్, ఇంటి ఆవరణ... సినిమాలో పెద్దగా లొకేషన్లు లేవు. కానీ, ఆ ఫీలింగ్ ఆడియన్‌లో రానివ్వకుండా సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ అపూర్వ అనిల్ శాలిగ్రాం మాయ చేశారు. మనల్ని సినిమాలోకి తీసుకు వెళ్లారు. సంగీతం కూడా అంతే! సాంకేతికంగా సినిమా బావుంది. ఓటీటీకి బెస్ట్ ఇచ్చారని చెప్పుకోవాలి. కొన్ని కొన్ని లోపాలు ఏవైనా ఉంటే... నటీనటులు తమ అభినయంతో కవర్ చేసేశారు.  

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారు? : అమ్ము పాత్రలో ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మీ జీవించారు. ముఖ్యంగా ఆమె కన్నీరు పెట్టుకుంటుంటే... కొన్నిసార్లు మనమూ ఎమోషనల్ అవుతాం. భర్త తనపై చెయ్యి చేసుకోవడం సహించలేని తనం, అదే సమయంలో నిస్సహాయతను వ్యక్తం చేసే సన్నివేశాల్లో ఐశ్యర్య లక్ష్మీ అభినయం అద్భుతం! నెగిటివ్ షేడ్స్ ఉన్న క్యారెక్టర్లను ఇంతకు ముందు నవీన్ చంద్ర చేశారు. ఆయనకు ఈ క్యారెక్టర్ చేయడం పెద్ద ఛాలెంజ్ ఏమీ కాదు. అయితే... పతాక సన్నివేశాల్లో భార్య ధైర్యంగా ముందడుగు వేసి, డీఐజీ దగ్గర నిలబడిన సన్నివేశంలో నవీన్ చంద్ర ఇచ్చిన ఎక్స్‌ప్రెషన్ నటుడిగా అతడిని మరో మెట్టు ఎక్కించింది. బాబీ సింహ, ప్రేమ్ సాగర్, సత్య కృష్ణన్, సంజయ్ స్వరూప్ తదితరులు పాత్రల పరిధి మేరకు నటించారు. రఘుబాబు కనిపించేది రెండు సన్నివేశాల్లో అయినప్పటికీ... కథలో కీలక పాత్ర చేశారు.

ఫైనల్‌గా చెప్పేది ఏంటంటే? : మహిళలు ధైర్యంగా ఉండాలని చెప్పే చిత్రమిది. మహిళలకు ధైర్యం ఇచ్చే చిత్రమిది. కథానాయిక పాత్ర కొత్తది ఏమీ కాదు. ప్రతి పల్లెలో, పట్టణంలో, నగరంలో ఒక అమ్ము ఉంటుంది. మనసులో తనను తానుగా అమ్ము వేసుకున్న కంచె నుంచి ఆమె బయటకు రావాలని, భయాన్ని వీడాలని చెప్పే చిత్రమిది. సింపుల్ స్టోరీని ఐశ్యర్య లక్ష్మీ, నవీన్ చంద్ర తమ అభినయంతో చివర వరకు చూసేలా చేశారు. కొన్ని సీన్స్ లాజిక్‌కు దూరంగా ఉన్నా సరే... వీకెండ్ 'అమ్ము'ను చూడొచ్చు. 'అమ్ము' ఎమోషన్, యాక్టింగ్ & క్యారెక్టర్‌లో ఇంటెన్సిటీ మనసును తాకుతుంది.

An eye-opener on abusive marriages!

Amazon Prime’s original movie Ammu focuses on domestic violence and abusive marriages.

With Naveen Chandra, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Bobby Simha in lead roles, the film is directed by Charukesh Sekhar and produced by Kalyan Shankar and Kaarthekeyan Santhanam under the banner of Stone Bench.

It is streaming on Amazon Prime Video from Wednesday, 19 October. Here’s our review:

Ammu (Aishwarya Lekshmi) and Ravi (Naveen Chandra), a police circle inspector, are a newly married couple. Everything about their marriage is so perfect that Ammu believes that she is the luckiest woman to have a husband like Ravi.

She cooks delicious food for him and takes lunch to the police station. She’s the perfect wife.

But soon, Ammu realises that she is the only perfect aspect in their marriage. One day, she forgets to take lunch for Ravi. And that is when she is introduced to his other side. Later, for different and silly reasons, he starts abusing her, and tortures her physically.

Unable to figure out how to survive, Ammu decides to take an extreme step to teach Ravi a lesson. She seeks help from Prabhu (Bobby Simha), a criminal who is on parole to attend his sister’s marriage.

Ravi tortures Prabhu in the police station for not meeting the parole conditions. Prabhu needs help and so does Ammu. How these two manage to teach Ravi a lesson forms the crux of the story.

Effortless performances

The movie will hit you hard. Aishwarya Lekshmi essays a character that is contrary to all her previous roles. She is the perfect choice for Ammu. Aishwarya seems so effortless in her performance as she gets under the character’s skin.

Naveen Chandra needs a special mention here. Though he has been playing roles with grey shades for some time, in Ammu , he plays an egoistic husband who shows no concern for his wife.

His character Ravi is about male ego and masculinity; a wife-beater that we often come across in newspapers and perhaps in our neighbourhood. Being Ravi is not an easy job, but Naveen Chandra pulls it off.

Charukesh kept it realistic

The credit for making such a film goes to director Charukesh. The screenplay is amazing and the plot is down-to-earth.

The scenes of abuse are not shown on screen and instead, all that you hear are screams.

The director has succeeded in portraying the reality: How a housewife’s world revolves around her husband after the wedding, and how the society humiliates and looks down upon a woman who wants to get out of a toxic relationship.

He showcases how many women silently suffer domestic violence for ages for the sake of their parents’ status, kids’ future and societal pressure.

Charukesh did a commendable job in putting all this together while not showing any act of violence.

Ammu is an eye-opener for many women who continue to suffer in abusive relationships without giving a second thought to their own life and future. This is a must-watch movie.

“Ammu” is the latest original produced by Amazon Prime. The film, starring Aishwarya Lakshmi, Naveen Chandra, and Bobby Simha in lead roles, started streaming on Prime App on October 19. This concept is particularly impressive in the trailer.. let’s see how entertaining the movie is..!!

Story : Ammu (Aishwarya Lakshmi) marries the boy next door Rabindranath (Naveen Chandra) with many hopes. At first, everything is fine. Husband pours unconditional love. But.. slowly the dark side of her husband is coming out. Ammu’s world also darkens as she realizes that what was around her until then was only an illusion. Apart from escaping from her husband who tortures her physically and mentally, how should she reveal his true nature to the world? Prabhu (Bobby Simha) is the weapon found by Ammu who is thinking that. Using Prabhu.. How did Ammu persuade her husband Ravindra? This is the “Ammu” story.

Actors Performance:  Naveen Chandra surprises with a typical characterization. Although Fahad imitated the performance of “Kumbalangi Nights” in some frames & scenes, he failed as a sadistic husband. Naveen Chandra has really lived the role to the extent that the women are cursed. Ravi’s role in this film will remain one of the most memorable roles in his career.

Aishwarya Lakshmi portrays the average woman as Ammu. She got into that role very naturally. We feel like we are watching a girl in our house. Especially.. the scene where he is crying and comforting himself at the bus stand is tear-jerking.

However..if there was more clarity in the characterization, the character would have been more elevated and connected. Although Bobby Simha’s role was short, he was impressed with his screen presence.

Technical performance : Camera woman Apoorva Saligram’s performance is the main asset of the film. The way the tone of the movie is controlled to match the emotion in the movie is good. Also.. the way the heroine’s inferior personality is conveyed with lighting is also good.

Bharat Shankar’s music did not sync with the Telugu nativity, and the Telugu translation lyrics also failed to elevate the emotion. This is one of the minuses of the movie. The production design & artwork are good. Director Charukesh’s attempt to tell an ordinary story in an extraordinary manner is commendable. 

However.. he hesitated in the story. Although he was able to create an impact in terms of the trailer by choosing the police-thief chase as the background for the concept of domestic violence, he could not entertain as a movie. In one case it seems so simple. Also.. the way the climax was conceived is not good. If more care had been taken in these two matters, the film would have gone to another range.

Analysis : “Ammu” is an attempt to prove that the wife does not need to bear the beast in Magadi. As it is an OTT release, there is an ease of forwarding lag & repeated scenes… Naveen Chandra’s acting, Aishwarya Lakshmi’s film “Ammu” is a must-watch for screen presences.

విజయ్ హీరోగా సినిమా అంటే తమిళనాటే కాదు తెలుగులో ఈమధ్యన కూడా తనకంటూ ఫాలోవర్స్ ఉన్నారు. రిచ్ యాక్షన్, ఎమోషన్ కలగలిపిన కథలతో ఇతని సినిమాలుంటాయని ఒక అంచనా. ఇంతకీ ఈ చిత్రం గ్రేట్ గా ఉందో, గ్రేటెస్ట్ గా ఉందో.. ఉంటే ఎందులో గ్రేటెస్టో చూద్దాం.

కథలోకి వెళితే గాంధి (విజయ్) స్పెషల్ యాంటి టెరరిస్ట్ స్క్వాడ్ లో పనిచేస్తుంటాడు. ఆ సంగతి అతని భార్య (స్నేహ) కి తెలియదు. వీళ్లకి ఒక ఐదారేళ్ల కొడుకు జీవన్.

గాంధికి ముగ్గురు కొలీగ్స్ (ప్రశాంత్, ప్రభుదేవా, అజ్మల్ అమీర్). వీళ్ల సీనియర్ ఆఫీసర్ నసీర్ (జయరాం).

కెన్యాలో ఒక యాంటి టెరరిస్ట్ ఆపరేషన్లో రాజీవ్ మీనన్ (మోహన్) అనే వ్యక్తిపై దాడి చేస్తారు గాంధి బృందం. ఆ తర్వాత మరొక ఆపరేషన్లో భాగంగా గాంధి తన కొడుకు జీవన్ ని కోల్పోతాడు. అప్పటినుంచి భార్యతో కూడా గాంధికి సంబంధం చెడుతుంది.

కానీ 16 ఏళ్ల తర్వాత రష్యాలో జరిగిన మరొక ఆపరేషన్లో అచ్చం తనలాగే కనపడే ఒక యువకుడిని చూస్తాడు గాంధి. అక్కడి నుంచి కథ ఏ మలుపులు తీసుకుంటుంది? ఇంతకీ ఆ వ్యక్తి ఎవరు? ఇన్నాళ్ళూ ఎక్కడున్నాడు? అతని ఉద్దేశాలు ఏవిటి? అతని వెనుక ఉన్నదెవరు? వీటికి సమాధానాలే తక్కిన కథంతా.

ఐడియాగా ఈ పాయింట్ బాగానే ఉన్నట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది. కానీ కథగా మలిచేటప్పుడు తెలివి వాడలేదు. ఎప్పుడు ఏది రివీల్ చేయాలి, ఏది దాచాలి, ఏది దాచకూడదు అనేది చాలా పట్టుతో రాసుకుని ఉండాల్సింది. ఐడియా బాగున్నా కథగా మలచడంలో, కథనం రాసుకోవడంలో ఘోరంగా తప్పటడగులు వేసారు. సంభాషణలు కూడా అస్సలు గ్రిపింగ్ గా లేవు.

ఇది విజయ్ ఫ్యాన్స్ ని మెప్పించే ప్రయత్నంతో అతని ఎలివేషన్స్ తో తీసిన సినిమాలా ఉంది తప్ప ఎక్కడా రచనలో శ్రద్ధ కనపడలేదు. ఓపెనింగ్ ఫైట్ సీన్లో ముసుగు తీయగానే విజయ్ రివీల్ అవుతాడు అనుకుంటే చనిపోయిన కెప్టెన్ విజయ్ కాంత్ కనిపిస్తాడు. ఆర్టిఫీషియల్ ఇంటిలిజెన్స్ లో విజయ్ కాంత్ ని రప్పించాడు దర్శకుడు. ఆ తర్వాత కొంత సేపటికి విజయ్ డబల్ యాక్షన్. అందులో కూడా యంగ్ విజయ్ పాత్రకి ఏ.ఐ వాడారు. ఈ టెక్నికాలిటీ పక్కన పెడితే తక్కిన కథంతా ఇద్దరు విజయ్ ల మధ్య ఫైటే. అందులో అన్నీ బలవంతపు సంఘటనలు, ఎక్కడా లాజిక్ లేని సీన్లు. లాజిక్ లేకపోయినా పర్వాలేదు, ఎమోషనల్ మేజిక్ అయినా ఉండాలికదా! అదీ లేదు!

నటీనటవర్గం మాత్రం నిండుగా సీనియర్ హీరో హీరోయిన్లతో నింపేసాడు దర్శకుడు.

విజయ్ ది డబల్ యాక్షన్ ధమాకా. ఫ్యాన్స్ కి ఏమో కానీ సగటు సాధారణ ప్రేక్షకుడికి మాత్రం ఓకే అనిపిస్తాడు. డ్యాన్సులు, ఫైట్స్ బానే చేసాడు.

స్నేహ చాలా సేపు ప్రెగ్నెంట్ గా కనిపించి తర్వాత ఒక మిడిల్ ఏజ్ గృహిణిగా కొనసాగింది.

చాలాకాలం తర్వాత అలనాటి హీరోయిన్ లైలా ప్రశాంత్ భార్యగా కనిపించింది.

ప్రశాంత్, ప్రభుదేవా తో పాటు ఆర్జీవీ సినిమాల్లో జగన్ పాత్రధారి అజ్మల్ అమీర్ కూడా ఈ సీనియర్ నటుల సరసన తన ఉనికి చాటుకున్నాడు.

1980ల నాటి హీరో మోహన్ నెగటివ్ రోల్ లో కాసేపు కనిపించాడు. జయరాం కూడా ఓకే అనిపించాడు. చివర్లో ఒక చిన్న సీనులో శి వకార్తికేయన్ కూడా కనిపిస్తాడు.

ఆర్టిఫీషియల్ ఇంటిలిజెన్స్ ని, గ్రాఫిక్స్ ని వాడుకుని టెక్నికల్ గా రిచ్ గా తీసిన సినిమా ఇది. నిర్మాణ విలువల్లో ఎక్కడా రాజీ పడలేదు. చెప్పుకోవడానికి ఎంతున్నా కథా కథనాల్లో ఆత్మ లేకపోయే సరికి అసహనం పెరుగుతుంది.

దీనికి తోడు యువన్ శంకర్ రాజా సంగీతం ఈ సినిమాకి ప్రధానమైన మైనస్. నేపథ్య సంగీతం పరమ చిరాకుగా ఉంది. కథనంలో తేడాలున్నా సినిమాని నిలబెట్టేంత శక్తి నేపథ్య సంగీతానికి ఉంటుంది. కానీ ఇక్కడ మాత్రం కథనంతో పోటీ పడి బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ మ్యూజిక్ సహనపరీక్ష పెట్టింది. పోనీ ఆటవిడుపుగా పాటలన్నా బాగున్నాయా అంటే అదీ లేదు. పాత పాట “స్వర్గమే ఎండ్రాలుం..” అనే ఇళయరాజా తమిళ హిట్ తెలుగులో వినిపిస్తుంది. అదొక్కటీ కాస్త రిలీఫ్ గా అనిపిస్తుంది. “స్పార్క్..” పాట ఒక్కటీ చూడడానికి బాగుంది. వినడానికి మాత్రం కొత్తగా లేదు.

కథ కెన్యాలో మొదలయ్యి, ఇండియా మీదుగా థాయిలాండ్ వెళ్లి, రష్యాలో టర్నింగ్ తీసుకుని ఇండియాలో చావగొట్టుకోవడంతో ముగుస్తుంది. అన్నట్టు ఇక్కడ చెప్పుకున్న అన్ని దేశాల్లోనూ చావగొట్టుకోవడాలు కామన్. సగం సినిమా స్టంట్ మాస్టర్ కి అప్పజెప్పి దర్శకుడు చిల్ అయ్యాడేమో అని అనిపిస్తుంది.

పోస్టర్ మీద ఇద్దరు విజయ్ లని చూపించేయడం వల్ల సినిమా చూస్తున్నప్పుడు టర్నింగ్ పాయింట్ ముందే తెలిసిపోయేట్టు ఉంది. కనీసం పోస్టర్లో ఎంత వరకు రివీల్ చేయాలో తెలియనితనంతో రిలీజ్ చేసారు దీనిని. ఒక కీలకమైన సీన్ తర్వాత, 2008 నుంచి కథ 2024కి షిఫ్ట్ అవుతుంది. సరిగ్గా అప్పుడే పోస్టర్ గుర్తుకొచ్చి ఒక అనుమానమొస్తుంది. ఆ అనుమానం కాసేపటికి నిజమవుతుంది. దానివల్ల తెరమీద కనిపించిన ట్విస్ట్ ట్విస్టులా అనిపించదు.

పోయాడనుకున్న ఒక వ్యక్తి చాలా ఏళ్ల తర్వాత కనిపిస్తే, అన్నాళ్లూ ఎక్కడున్నావని, ఎవరి దగ్గరున్నావని అడగడం సహజం. ఆ ప్రశ్నలు ఎవ్వరూ అడగరిక్కడ. ఏదో ఊరెళ్లి వచ్చిన వ్యక్తితో గడుపుతున్నట్టు కాజువల్ గా గడిపేస్తుంటారు. ఇలాంటి అసహజమైన పాత్రల బిహేవియర్ వల్ల ప్రేక్షకుడు కనెక్ట్ కాలేని పరిస్థితి. అలాగే ఒకచోట చిన్నపిల్లలని హింసించే సన్నివేశాలు ఘోరంగా ఉన్నాయి.

ఒక్క వాక్యంలో చెప్పాలంటే ఇది ఒక విలన్ రివెంజ్ డ్రామా. కానీ అది ప్రేక్షకుల మీద తీర్చుకున్నట్టు అయింది. ఇందులో హీరో, విలన్ రెండూ విజయే. ఎవరితో కనెక్ట్ అయ్యి చూడాలో అర్ధం కాదు.

ఈ సినిమాలోని క్లైమాక్స్ “వరెస్ట్ ఆఫ్ ఆల్” అనే రేంజులో ఉంది. క్రికెట్ స్టేడియంలో ఆ యాక్షన్ ట్రాక్ ఏవిటో, చేజింగులేవిటో, ఫ్లడ్లైట్లంత ఎత్తు మీద చావచితక్కొట్టుకోవడమేంటో అర్ధం కాదు. ధోనీ లాంటి వాళ్లని చూపిస్తూ అంత టైట్ సెక్యూరిటీ ఉన్నచోట ఈ పిచ్చి చేజులు చిన్నపిల్లలాటల్లా ఉన్నాయి. అసలీ క్లైమాక్స్ విన్నాక అయినా విజయ్ ఒక్కసారి ఆలోచించుకోవాల్సింది.

కొత్తదనం లేని కథ, ఎక్కడా హత్తుకోని బలహీనమైన కథనం, ఏ ఎమోషన్ తో ట్రావెల్ చేస్తూ అనుభూతి పొందాలో తెలియని ప్రేక్షకుల నిస్సహాయత, క్లైమాక్స్ పెట్టిన సహన పరీక్ష… వెరసి ఇది “గ్రెటేస్ట్ ఆఫ్ ఆల్ టైం స్టుపిడిటి” అనిపిస్తుంది.

18 Pages Review: Not a Refreshing Story

The names of Allu Aravind, Sukumar, and Bunny Vaas, and the hit pair Nikhil and Anupama are enough to raise interest about "18 Pages". In addition, two songs have become popular. So, the film has generated positive pre-release buzz.

Let us see if the film lives up to expectations.

Story: Siddhu (Nikhil Siddhartha) works as an app developer for a software company. A 2019 diary written by a young woman named Nandini is discovered by him (Anupama Parameswaran).

Siddhu learns from her diary entries that she values face-to-face interaction with others over communication via digital means. Her trip to Hyderabad from her Andhra village was motivated by the need to deliver a cover to Venkatrao, a mutual friend of her grandfather's.

Siddhu develops feelings for her after reading the journal, and he travels to her hometown to finally meet her. Siddhu finds out from Nandini's relatives that she was killed in a car accident a few months ago. Astonished by the news, he heads back to Hyderabad.

Has she really passed away?

Artistes’ Performances: Nikhil Siddharth gives a convincing performance as a young man who falls for a girl he has never seen or met. But he doesn't have a consistent appearance; rather, he seems to be out of shape in a few key spots.

Anupama Parameswaran shines in the role of the heroine.

Sarayu, in her role as Nikhil's friend, delivers some humorous lines. Short cameos from Posani and Ajay are fine.

Technical Excellence: The music by Gopi Sundar is the main attraction. Whether it's the heartbreak song "Time Ivvu" or the melodious number "Nannaya Raasina" or "Nee Valle Pilla," all of the songs fit in perfectly with the movie's overall theme.

Srikanth Vissa has done a fair job with the dialogue. The story that Sukumar has written feels dated.

The film has decent cinematography, but its visual style is inconsistent. Sometimes it just seems so...old.

Analysis A girl and boy falling in love without ever meeting is an old concept. Ajith's "Prema Lekha" dealt with the same subject. So, how does a hero falling in love with a girl accidentally by reading her diary become a novel plot line? The bare bones of Sukumar's story are interesting, but they don't capture the current times.

The script has some serious problems. If Nikhil Siddharth's character fell in love with Anupama after reading her diary in one sitting (the whole thing is only 18 pages long, hence the title), we could see that happening. However, in the film, he is shown to get excited after every turn of the page, and to react wildly to every incident narrated in the story as if it were happening at that very moment. It's hard to imagine how a 2022 computer whiz like him would respond to events in 2019 dairy.

It's also shown that he reads a page or two a day for a couple of days and then starts doing things like turning off social media apps, etc. that Nandini did in 2019. This doesn't feel like a natural response on the part of the character, but rather like a screenwriter's shortcut.

Aside from this and other logical issues, "18 Pages" captures our attention from the start. The initial events, such as Nikhl's break-up with his girlfriend and his reactions to Anupama's diary, are interesting. The situations preceding the song "Nannayya Raasina" are also enjoyable. Another interesting episode in the film is the tension that the hero feels when he suspects she has married his neighbour.

However, aside from a few episodes, the sluggish narrative and unconvincing kidnap drama are detrimental to the flow. The second half is structured like a thriller, and when the true mystery is revealed, it is completely unconvincing. The reason given for the importance of a "cover" is ridiculous and illogical. The final moments appear to deviate from the main theme. Many implausible events occur.

Fortunately, the film concludes in a more convincing manner.

Overall, "18 Pages" succeeds only intermittently; the drama is underwhelming, and the love story fails to resonate. There are some good songs, and the first half is pretty good, but overall it just doesn't feel very modern.

Bottom line: Only Few Pages
