Application requirements

Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree from a regionally accredited institution. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program, or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program. Applications may be considered for provisional admission with a GPA of 2.99 to 2.50.

The letters of recommendation should be from individuals who can speak to the applicant’s potential for success in a graduate program.

The admission committee pays particular attention to the quality of writing, the ideas expressed and the relative match between the applicant and program goals.

University Launches Four New Online Degree Programs

Montclair State University has launched four new fully online degree programs for students seeking a bachelor’s or master’s education. These flexible, online offerings, which will welcome students beginning fall 2024 and 2025, allow students to complete coursework around their busy schedules – with opportunities to engage and collaborate with faculty and classmates.

New online degree programs at Montclair:

• Online Bachelor’s in Psychology , a fully asynchronous program which allows graduates to find success in a wide variety of career paths including roles in social services, marketing research, counseling, mental health, education, business, finance, human resources and more.
• Online Bachelor’s in Business Administration , a  highly ranked  and AACSB-accredited program with concentrations in Marketing, Management, and Finance. The program’s innovative courses help students master the business theories and best practices that promote continuous advancement in the fast-paced workforce of the future.
• Online Master’s in Accounting , designed for career changers looking to enter the accounting field or those interested in preparing to sit for the New Jersey CPA examination. Saint Joseph’s University and the Barnes Foundation Launch Online Museum Education Graduate Program, Marking First-Of-Its-Kind Collaboration in Philadelphia

Innovative partnership offers students a unique opportunity to learn from esteemed museum experts

PHILADELPHIA, AUGUST 5, 2024 — Today, Saint Joseph’s University and the Barnes Foundation announced a new online graduate program designed to prepare future museum educators for roles in public and private institutions. Beginning in fall 2024, the museum education graduate program will offer a Master of Arts in Museum Education and a Museum Education Certificate . 

Building on the educational affiliation between the Barnes and Saint Joseph’s University, which began in 2018 to further the common missions of both institutions, this new, comprehensive graduate program teaches students how to share knowledge with the public in an engaging and inclusive way, from K-12 school groups to museum visitors. Participants will learn strategies for teaching about objects and collections and develop skills applicable to any type of museum, including art and natural history museums, science institutes and historical sites. 

“The uniqueness of our new museum education program lies in the strength of the partnership between the Barnes and SJU,” says Joshua Power, BS ’05, EdD ’16 , dean of the School of Education and Human Development at Saint Joseph’s University. “This program was co-created by these two great institutions to provide a one-of-a-kind educational experience tailored specifically to the museum industry and advancing your museum career.” 

Offered entirely online, the museum education program was designed for students from around the world, with assignments and projects that encourage participants to engage with their local museums. Students will explore various topics, including the history of museum education; pedagogical strategies for gallery-based teaching; and museum management. Each course will be taught by esteemed faculty who bring a wealth of practical experience.

“This innovative endeavor with Saint Joseph’s University is at the heart of our mission to make art accessible and relatable through education,” says Martha Lucy, Deputy Director for Research, Interpretation, and Education at the Barnes Foundation. “The Barnes has been focused on learning since our founding in 1922, so this really is in our DNA — and we are excited to help shape the next generation of museum educators.”

In addition to learning from expert faculty, students enrolled in the program will use the Barnes’ state-of-the-art Visual Experience Platform (VXP), designed specifically for the study of visual material. This innovative online learning tool allows students to zoom in on artworks in astonishing detail while engaging in dialogue with their peers and educators, creating a highly interactive environment conducive to learning. 

Local students enrolled in the program will have access to the many vibrant cultural offerings of Philadelphia as well as internship opportunities at the Barnes and Saint Joseph’s University’s Frances M. Maguire Art Museum , which is housed in the original Barnes gallery building. Internships require 35 hours of fieldwork and a biweekly seminar component. 

Credits earned from the certificate program in museum education can be applied toward the Master of Arts in Museum Education at Saint Joseph’s University. Students who complete the certificate program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher can take six additional courses to earn the MA.

What happens after I submit my application?

After you submit your application, you will hear from an admissions representative within 24 hours. If you have not yet submitted all of your materials (transcript, transcript evaluation if required, government-issued photo ID), then your admissions representative will support you to submit those materials. After your completed application and supporting materials are reviewed, your application will either be accepted or rejected. If your application is accepted, you will be able to complete the enrollment process. This includes signing the enrollment agreement and submitting your tuition deposit. Once your enrollment is complete, you will be able to select a cohort start date and begin preparations for the program!

Is there a cost to apply?

Map: Michigan joins list of states that offer tuition-free community college

Michigan will provide tuition-free community college to its recent high school graduates. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an education budget plan earlier this week. The administration says the state will be able to cover tuition costs for associate degrees and skilled certificates beginning in the Fall.

“In Michigan, we want every single person to be able to get onto the path that is best for them,” Whitmer said, the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY network , reported.

The Whitmer administration estimated that its free community college program will save money for over 18,000 students, up to $4,800 per student each year.

Michigan is one of at least 30 states to offer a version of free community college. Those eligible for Michigan's program must enroll in college full-time and fill out federal student aid form. The program is not dependent on a student's household income.

More than 30 states offer a version of tuition-free community college. Students who are starting out in higher education, looking to to earn certificates or wanting to pursue a skilled trade have the opportunity to do so without going into debt.

Outside of Michigan, Colorado, Minnesota, and New Hampshire are the latest states to implement free college, according to BestColleges . Michigan, Minnesota and New Hampshire's programs will begin this fall. Colorado's program will take effect in 2025.

Free community college programs are often called "promise programs." While the programs significantly reduce costs, they often do not cover other expenses like room and board, transportation and book fees..

Eligibility for these programs differ by state. Often, those who qualify must graduate from an in-state high school and enroll full time. Other qualifications may include academic performance or financial need, Bankrate reported.

Michigan state officials say funding for its Michigan Achievement Scholarship would allow every recent high school graduate to receive an associate degree or skilled certificate at a community college for free. Unlike other states, Michigan says most students qualify for its community college guarantee program.

Students struggle to cover tuition costs

Tuition bills for the upcoming academic year are already here, but only 4% of Gen Z students say they’re fully funded for the entire school year, USA TODAY recently reported.

College costs have risen exponentially over the past several decades, outpacing both inflation and wages, experts say.

Since 1998, the  cost of a college education has grown by 188% , a rate faster than practically all goods and services and inflation-adjusted  hourly wages , according to Research.com. During the same time period, wages increased 26%.

As of June, 90% of college-bound Gen Z students said they don’t yet know how they’ll fully pay for school, according to a poll of 9,097 students surveyed by the  application site ScholarshipOwl . A fifth said they still needed more than $20,000 to meet the year’s tuition.

What are the outcomes of states that cover community colleges?

The average cost of an undergraduate degree ranges from  $25,707 to more than $218,000 , according to the Education Data Initiative. The price varies and depends on whether a student lives on campus and the type of institution they're attending.

Many students will have to take out loans to afford higher education. The weight of those loans can often dictate the types of careers students pursue and the opportunities they will have access to after graduating.

Research from the Federal Trade Commission found that offering free community college increased enrollment by 26% and degree completions by 20%.

Early data from the Tennessee Promise Program - the first free community college program in the U.S.- suggests that more students are enrolling into community college, and more are also persisting in it, according to the study.

The College set to launch 16 new degree programs

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University is launching 16 new academic programs in fall 2024. Twelve of those programs will include online formats, expanding learning opportunities for students across the country.

Ara Austin , senior director of online engagement and strategic initiatives and a clinical associate professor in the  School of Molecular Sciences , knows the importance of growing the amount of options for online students.

“The College offers online degree programs which are not offered elsewhere across natural sciences, social sciences and humanities disciplines,” she said.

“In addition to the required coursework, online students can participate in student organizations, research opportunities and internships remotely. These experiences help students to engage in the greater ASU community and set them up for success after graduation.”

One specific program overseen by Austin was created to further engage online students and offer unique experiences surrounding research opportunities. The  Online Undergraduate Research Scholars (OURS) program helps students participate in research projects in a remote setting.

“Research experiences are crucial for students considering graduate programs, and it gives the students a way to immerse themselves in a specific field or topic that they are passionate about in an applied way,” Austin said.

Between online and on-ground options, The College is dedicated to creating supportive and accessible environments for all students.

Explore some of the new offerings available this fall:

Graduate certificate in American Studies: Online graduate students now have the ability to survey the complexities surrounding politics and social change in the United States. The certificate trains students in applied research methods, critical methodologies, history and the use of storytelling to represent diverse communities.  

Master of Urban and Environmental Planning: Now offered in an online platform, students from around the world can begin their career in planning in public, private, consulting, development and nonprofit sectors. This program offers the same curriculum available to on-campus students. 

BS in biological sciences (neurobiology, physiology and behavior):   Online students can now dive into this concentration of biological sciences. Students will discover how animals and humans function, think and behave, and explore molecular and cellular processes of organismal systems. The program will also provide the tools necessary to understand ecological and evolutionary influences, and develop holistic approaches to animal functions. Students also have the existing on-campus option.

Minor in classics:  Students wanting to expand their knowledge of the ancient world will become immersed in the language and literature of Greek and Roman antiquity through this new minor. The on-campus program includes courses in philosophy, language, art and religion to provide a background on Greek and Roman antiquity.

Minor in classical civilizations: Available for on-campus students, this minor provides a solid grounding in ancient civilization and mythology, along with an interdisciplinary introduction to the ancient world as a whole. Students can uncover insights into any major, as the goal of the program is to aid in obtaining a clearer vision of the future by studying the wisdom of the past.

BA in culture, technology and environment: Launched last year, the culture, technology and environment program on the Tempe campus became the first to draw from all three schools within the humanities division at The College. Now students will be able to engage in humanistic approaches to an array of issues through the new online degree program. The degree addresses current issues such as approaching equitable and diverse global citizenship, climate change, environmental justice and ethical disputes surrounding technology.

BS in earth and environmental sciences: The new earth and environmental sciences degree will teach students how to examine the physical sciences and process-oriented geosciences focused on Earth’s surface environment while establishing foundational understandings about the evolution of Earth’s systems. It provides another option for students, along with the existing  BA in earth and environmental sciences . Both degrees have also been made available through ASU Online.

BA in English (narrative studies): A new English degree concentration will be available for students on the Tempe campus this fall. The program will dive into the various forms, contexts and cultures of narrative. Those interested in dissecting the nature of storytelling will learn methods to interrogate the social, historical, aesthetic and ethical dimensions of stories.

MA in global security (irregular warfare):   The new online graduate program will allow students to focus their study topics on warfare such as proxy wars, counterinsurgency, narrative warfare and other forms of modern conflict. Courses teach both theoretical and practical aspects of irregular warfare and its importance in the global security environment.

Graduate certificate in Holocaust and genocide studies: The new online graduate certificate gives students the necessary context to further educate others about the Holocaust and other acts of genocide. This certificate helps students understand representation, memorialization and commemoration along with providing theoretical and historiographical grounding to understand the Holocaust and examining other genocides in world history.

BA in international relations:  This new degree, available on the Tempe campus and online, provides students with vital knowledge of intelligence; diplomacy and international trade; law; and institutions as they head into the world of public service, and prepares them to work with some of the field’s experts and policy practitioners.

BS in international relations:   Also available on the Tempe campus and online, this new degree helps students develop analytical and quantitative skills in order to take on careers in international public service. Students will learn about data-driven solutions to enact meaningful change in public, nonprofit and private sectors.

Minor in Italian:   Launching this fall, the new online minor will become the first and only program of its kind in the country. Online students will now have the opportunity to learn the Italian language while enhancing their knowledge of Italian history, geography and environment. The minor also offers opportunities to study abroad to further expand linguistic skills or to engage in research collaborations. Students also have the existing on-campus option.

MS in neuroscience: A new master’s degree on the Tempe campus offers students the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge of fundamental neuroscientific concepts. Students will be able to understand the genetic, molecular, cellular and circuit-level changes that occur in the presence of neurodegenerative disease, altered development and disorders.

Graduate certificate in public history: Students looking to kick-start a career as a public historian will gain necessary and applicable skills to do so through the school’s new online graduate certificate. This program allows graduate students to explore local and community history, museum studies, archival training and more. Students also have the existing on-campus option.

Undergraduate certificate in workplace communication: This certificate available on the Tempe campus will teach participants how to lead various teams and create well-versed presentations. Communication skills learned in this program will complement a wide range of majors and will aid in maximizing productivity and satisfaction in professional settings.

Western Governors University awards 50K degrees during 2024 academic year

SALT LAKE CITY — Crystal Pickering aged out of foster care at age 18 and faced multiple barriers to reaching typical teenage milestones such as graduating from high school, let alone attempting college or earning a degree.

"In the middle of my senior year of high school, I was on my own. I got a full-time job at Taco Bell while taking public transportation to school, so I could pay my rent. I faced multiple challenges," she said.

Pickering got pregnant and married at age 20. Her then-husband was in the military, which took them to Louisiana and Alaska. They divorced and she returned to Washington state with two kids in tow.

She resumed attending church and decided to join a dating site for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she met her current husband.

"As things got serious and my lease was up, I moved down here," she said.

For a while, she was a stay-at-home mom and ran a business.

"I have always known that I wanted to do something bigger with my life than just repeat the cycles that I grew up watching over and over and over again and still see," she said.

With her husband's encouragement, she earned a bachelor's degree from Utah Valley University in information technology management.

Next, the mother of five, with the support and backing of family, built on that accomplishment, recently earning a Master of Science degree in information technology management in March from Western Governors University.

Pickering's personal accomplishment dovetails a major milestone for WGU, the national online, nonprofit university. She was among 49,564 Western Governors University students who earned a record 50,168 bachelor's or master's degrees during the 2024 academic year from the national online, nonprofit university established in 1997.

Two-thirds of the graduates were from one or more underserved populations — students of color, first generation, rural or low income.

While each of those graduates has had their own journey, Pickering said they share a common bond: "It's 50,000 people whose lives will never be the same. They have given themselves the opportunity to further their career aspirations and their goals and change the course of their family's lives," said Pickering, who earned her master's degree while working full time for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Tabernacle Choir, where she is its technical program manager.

"In fact, I was finishing my capstone paper in the Philippines while they were on tour," she said.

While she had already earned a bachelor's degree, earning her master's degree showed her children the value of education and how it can change the trajectory of an individual's life.

"That's one of the main reasons why I did it, was to show my kids it's never too late," she said.

WGU President Scott Pulsipher said the university is "reinvigorating the pathway to opportunity and having an impact at scale."

The university's educational model, which is student-centric and personalized, "works," he said.

"We are positioning our graduates to start and advance careers in high-demand fields, meeting workforce needs and strengthening the vitality of their families and communities."

One of WGU's defining characteristics is that it offers degrees in four key areas: business, education, information technology and health professions, including nursing. There is high demand for skilled workers in each of those disciplines.

According to WGU, the university confers 5.2% of the bachelor's degrees in education nationally, which leads United States colleges and universities.

It also awards 5.5% of all bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing nationally and its cybersecurity program is now the largest in the country.

Joe Fuller, chairman of WGU's Board of Trustees, in a statement said that Western Governors University, since its inception, has "worked to create an engine of economic mobility that accommodates everyone, especially those traditionally left behind by higher education."

Fuller, a distinguished management professor at Harvard Business School and co-director of the school's Managing the Future of Work project, added, "It is now doing this at a scale no other institution matches, putting students from all backgrounds, circumstances and experiences on a trajectory for a better life. This is exactly the kind of momentum we need to energize our workforce and our communities."

WGU offers more than 80 certificate, bachelor's and master's degree programs in business, education, health and technology fields in all 50 states.

"We are helping our students live their best possible lives, on a personal and a professional level," Pulsipher said, "and this has generational impacts that ripple into the future. We also are providing employers with the highly skilled, work-ready and diverse talent desperately needed to maintain America's prosperity and its competitive edge."

Pickering said WGU gave her the flexibility to work full time and have meaningful time with her family.

"There's certain seasons of my life and certain times of the year where I have a lot more flexibility, and, you know, I can focus more. But during the holidays, I could pull back and not stress about finals and making sure I'm going to four classes. I was able to ebb and flow with my schedule," she said.

WGU currently serves nearly 176,000 students, which includes the addition of more than 126,000 new students over the past fiscal year — up nearly 30% over the previous year.

With its current rate of growth, Pulsipher said "it's very likely that WGU will be the first institution with more than a million living alumni." WGU currently has more than 340,000 alumni.

It's doubtful that the founding governors of Western Governors University, among them former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, Colorado Gov. Roy Romer and Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer, "ever expected WGU'S impact to be so big and meaningful," he said.

"I think one of the most important things is, it should be telling everyone that the measure of quality in higher education should not be on the basis of how few you admit. It should probably be focused on how many lives have been able to be changed because of it," Pulsipher said.
