It Works: The Complete Original Edition
Simple Success Guides
Author: R. H. Jarrett
INTRODUCTION It Works may be small in size, but it is giant in impact. Originally published in 1926, this little pamphlet has gone on to sell millions of copies and influence countless lives. It Works was written by Roy Herbert Jarrett (1874–1937), a sales executive based in Chicago who was interested in using metaphysical principles to gain abundance and prosperity in every area of life. His writing became not only popular, but iconic, in the area of mental success. Rather than spend hundreds of pages on explanation and exposition, Jarrett boiled down his main principles to their most potent. One might easily be fooled by the small size of the content, but if you practice what he proposes, exactly as he proposes, then you will likely experience more success in whatever area you focus on. I first encountered It Works back in the 1990s, when I worked for a popular bookstore in the Midwest. Customer after customer would come in and ask for “the little red book.” At first, I had no idea what they were talking about, but I quickly learned that they wanted a copy of the pamphlet It Works by R. H. Jarrett. I was intrigued, and finally decided to read it for myself. I was amazed by the depth beneath the simplicity of the message. It’s clear that Jarrett’s material was well-tested before he ever put it down on paper. Part of the Simple Success Guides series, this St. Martin’s Essentials edition contains the full and complete original edition of the pamphlet. This edition also includes additional features to supplement what you’ll learn from R. H. Jarrett. First is The Magic Story by Frederick Van Rensselaer Dey. This classic fable has been the inspiration for those looking for more growth and success in business and in life since it was originally published in 1900. Like It Works , The Magic Story is an early variation on the theme of the Law of Attraction. While not as famous as similar books like It Works and Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, The Magic Story has been influential over the decades and is experiencing a resurgence due to its message of positivity and inspiration. We have also added a number of motivational poems and quotes. These materials are meant to augment the pamphlet’s message, and have been foundational for millions of people looking for inspiration over the last century. My hope is that you will read and enjoy It Works with an open mind, and then try out Jarrett’s methods for yourself, remembering to follow whatever prompts Life presents to you. I might suggest that you read It Works , make your plan, and then begin to implement its main principles. As you do, allow The Magic Story and the poems to inspire you along the way. In this way, the two parts of the book— It Works and the supplemental materials—can work together to help you stay focused on receiving the most positive experiences possible. As always, with these writings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the language is of its time. While we want to acknowledge the limitations of the language here, we have not updated the material, choosing instead to leave the works in their original forms. A final word of advice: make this book your own. We each are responsible for our own response to life, and this book teaches powerful techniques that can help to create a life of positivity and abundance if you use them in the spirit with which they were written. As the title suggests, It Works has worked for many before you, and now these same principles are waiting to help you to experience the life you desire. —Joel Fotinos WHAT IS THE REAL SECRET OF OBTAINING DESIRABLE POSSESSIONS? ARE some people born under a lucky star or other charm which enables them to have all that which seems so desirable, and if not, what is the cause of the difference in conditions under which men live? Many years ago, feeling that there must be a logical answer to this question, I decided to find out, if possible, what it was. I found the answer to my own satisfaction, and for years, have given the information to others who have used it successfully. From a scientific, psychological or theological viewpoint, some of the following statements may be interpreted as incorrect, but nevertheless, the plan has brought the results desired to those who have followed the simple instructions, and it is my sincere belief that I am now presenting it in a way which will bring happiness and possessions to many more. * * * “IF wishes were horses, beggars would ride,” is the attitude taken by the average man and woman in regard to possessions. They are not aware of a power so near that it is overlooked; so simple in operation that it is difficult to conceive; and so sure in results that it is not made use of consciously, or recognized as the cause of failure or success. * * * “GEE, I wish that were mine,” is the outburst of Jimmy, the office boy, as a new red roadster goes by; and Florence, the telephone operator, expresses the same thought regarding a ring in the jeweler’s window; while poor old Jones, the bookkeeper, during the Sunday stroll, replies to his wife, “Yes, dear, it would be nice to have a home like that, but it is out of the question. We will have to continue to rent.” Landem, the salesman, protests that he does all the work, gets the short end of the money and will some day quit his job and find a real one, and President Bondum, in his private sanctorum, voices a bitter tirade against the annual attack of hay-fever. At home it is much the same. Last evening, father declared that daughter Mabel was headed straight for disaster, and today, mother’s allowance problem and other trying affairs fade into insignificance as she exclaims, “This is the last straw. Robert’s school teacher wants to see me this afternoon. His reports are terrible, I know, but I’m late for Bridge now. She’ll have to wait until tomorrow.” So goes the endless stream of expressions like these from millions of people in all classes who give no thought to what they really want, and who are getting all they are entitled to or expect. If you are one of these millions of thoughtless talkers or wishers and would like a decided change from your present condition, you can have it; but first of all you must know what you want and this is no easy task. When you can train your objective mind (the mind you use every day) to decide definitely upon the things or conditions you desire, you will have taken your first big step in accomplishing or securing what you know you want. To get what you want is no more mysterious or uncertain than the radio waves all around you. Tune in correctly and you get a perfect result, but to do this, it is, of course, necessary to know something of your equipment and have a plan of operation. You have within you a mighty power, anxious and willing to serve you, a power capable of giving you that which you earnestly desire. This power is described by Thomson Jay Hudson, Ph.D., LL.D., author of “The Law of Psychic Phenomena,” as your subjective mind. Other learned writers use different names and terms, but all agree that it is omnipotent. Therefore, I call this Power “Emmanuel” (God in us). Regardless of the name of this Great Power, or the conscious admission of a God, the Power is capable and willing to carry to a complete and perfect conclusion every earnest desire of your objective mind, but you must be really in earnest about what you want. Occasional wishing or half-hearted wanting does not form a perfect connection or communication with your omnipotent power. You must be in earnest, sincerely and truthfully desiring certain conditions or things—mental, physical or spiritual. Your objective mind and will are so vacillating that you usually only WISH for things and the wonderful, capable power within you does not function. Most wishes are simply vocal expressions. Jimmy, the office boy, gave no thought of possessing the red roadster. Landem, the salesman, was not thinking of any other job or even thinking at all. President Bondum knew he had hay fever and was expecting it. Father’s business was quite likely successful, and mother no doubt brought home first prize from the Bridge party that day, but they had no fixed idea of what they really wanted their children to accomplish and were actually helping to bring about the unhappy conditions which existed. If you are in earnest about changing your present condition, here is a concise, definite, resultful plan, with rules, explanations and suggestions. THE PLAN WRITE down on paper in order of their importance the things and conditions you really want. Do not be afraid of wanting too much. Go the limit in writing down your wants. Change the list daily, adding to or taking from it, until you have it about right. Do not be discouraged on account of changes, as this is natural. There will always be changes and additions with accomplishments and increasing desires. THREE POSITIVE RULES OF ACCOMPLISHMENT Read the list of what you want three times each day: morning, noon and night. Think of what you want as often as possible. Do not talk to any one about your plan except to the Great Power within you which will unfold to your Objective Mind the method of accomplishment. It is obvious that you cannot acquire faith at the start. Some of your desires, from all practical reasoning, may seem positively unattainable, but, nevertheless, write them down on your list in their proper place of importance to you. There is no need to analyze how this Power within you is going to accomplish your desires. Such a procedure is as unnecessary as trying to figure out why a grain of corn placed in fertile soil shoots up a green stalk, blossoms and produces an ear of corn containing hundreds of grains, each capable of doing what the one grain did. If you will follow this definite plan and carry out the three simple rules, the method of accomplishment will unfold quite as mysteriously as the ear of corn appears on the stalk, and in most cases much sooner than you expect. When new desires, deserving position at or about the top of your list, come to you, then you may rest assured you are progressing correctly. Removing from your list items which at first you thought you wanted, is another sure indication of progress. It is natural to be skeptical and have doubts, distrust and questionings, but when these thoughts arise, get out your list. Read it over; or if you have it memorized, talk to your inner self about your desires until the doubts that interfere with your progress are gone. Remember, nothing can prevent your having that which you earnestly desire. Others have these things. Why not you? The Omnipotent Power within you does not enter into any controversial argument. It is waiting and willing to serve when you are ready, but your objective mind is so susceptible to suggestion that it is almost impossible to make any satisfactory progress when surrounded by skeptics. Therefore, choose your friends carefully and associate with people who now have some of the things you really want, but do not discuss your method of accomplishment with them. Put down on your list of wants such material things as money, home, automobile, or whatever it may be, but do not stop there. Be more definite. If you want an automobile, decide what kind, style, price, color, and all the other details, including when you want it. If you want a home, plan the structure, grounds and furnishings. Decide on location and cost. If you want money, write down the amount. If you want to break a record in your business, put it down. It may be a sales record. If so, write out the total, the date required, then the number of items you must sell to make it, also list your prospects and put after each name the sum expected. This may seem very foolish at first, but you can never realize your desires if you do not know positively and in detail what you want and when you want it. If you cannot decide this, you are not in earnest. You must be definite, and when you are, results will be surprising and almost unbelievable. A natural and ancient enemy will no doubt appear when you get your first taste of accomplishment. This enemy is Discredit, in form of such thoughts as: “It can’t be possible; it just happened to be. What a remarkable coincidence!” When such thoughts occur give thanks and assert credit to your Omnipotent Power for the accomplishment. By doing this, you gain assurance and more accomplishment, and in time, prove to yourself that there is a law, which actually works—at all times —when you are in tune with it. Sincere and earnest thanks cannot be given without gratitude and it is impossible to be thankful and grateful without being happy. Therefore, when you are thanking your greatest and best friend, your Omnipotent Power, for the gifts received, do so with all your soul, and let it be reflected in your face. The Power and what it does is beyond understanding. Do not try to understand it, but accept the accomplishment with thankfulness, happiness, and strengthened faith. Caution It is possible to want and obtain that which will make you miserable; that which will wreck the happiness of others; that which will cause sickness and death; that which will rob you of eternal life. You can have what you want, but you must take all that goes with it: so in planning your wants, plan that which you are sure will give to you and your fellow man the greatest good here on earth; thus paving the way to that future hope beyond the pale of human understanding. This method of securing what you want applies to everything you are capable of desiring and the scope being so great, it is suggested that your first list consist of only those things with which you are quite familiar, such as an amount of money or accomplishment, or the possession of material things. Such desires as these are more easily and quickly obtained than the discontinuance of fixed habits, the welfare of others, and the healing of mental or bodily ills. Accomplish the lesser things first. Then take the next step, and when that is accomplished, you will seek the higher and really important objectives in life, but long before you reach this stage of your progress, many worthwhile desires will find their place on your list. One will be to help others as you have been helped. Great is the reward to those who help and give without thought of self as it is impossible to be unselfish without gain. IN CONCLUSION Ashort while ago, Dr. Emil Coué came to this country and showed thousands of people how to help themselves. Thousands of others spoofed at the idea, refused his assistance and are today where they were before his visit. So with the statements and plan presented to you now. You can reject or accept. You can remain as you are or have anything you want. The choice is yours, but God grant that you may find in this short volume the inspiration to choose aright, follow the plan and thereby obtain, as so many others have, all things, whatever they may be, that you desire. Read the entire book over again, and again, AND THEN AGAIN. Memorize the three simple rules on pages thirteen and fourteen. Test them now on what you want most this minute. This book could have extended easily over 350 pages, but it has been deliberately shortened to make it as easy as possible for you to read, understand and use. Will you try it? Thousands of bettered lives will testify to the fact that It Works. Copyright © 2023 by Joel Fotinos

That purpose is the company’s focus, whether it’s anti-aging serums, energy-boosting teas, or weight-managing gummies. Ahead, this It Works! review will be focusing on a few items from the weight loss collection , including skinny tea, capsules, and gummies.
You already drink coffee, so you may as well sip on something that’s doing more for your body and mind than just providing plain ol’ caffeine. It Works! Skinny Brew combines adaptogens, nootropics, and polyphenols with deliciously smooth French roast coffee to give your body a boost, burn fat, and increase focus. A truly powerful blend, a 30-serving bag is $135 .
The Skinny Brew packs in a ton. Its foundational ingredients include caffeine (from green tea, green coffee beans, guarana, and Yerba mate), EGCG (from green tea), Nootropics (L-theanine, Alpha-GPC, Rhodiola Rosea, Brahmi, and Griffonia Simplicifolia seed), and chromium.
The only other components in the mix are guar gum, natural flavor, and silica for freshness.
One packet of Skinny Brew contains 10 calories and 2 carbohydrates. With 225 mg of caffeine and 1,000 mg of chromium to help with appetite suppression, you’ll also get 50 mg of nootropics for better concentration.
Skinny Brew may help your body burn fat by activating thermogenesis, increasing your metabolism to burn more energy, and boosting focus for better performance across the board.
Coffee has been praised for its health benefits that range from increased focus to an increased metabolic rate . Skinny Brew works by packing in a high concentration of caffeine, along with nootropics, ECGC, and chromium, to help increase your metabolism, reduce your appetite, and burn fat.
By having more energy (from existing fat), your natural energy and motivation for exercise may increase too.
You can enjoy Skinny Brew hot or cold. Mix a packet into 6-8 fl oz of water and enjoy. Since it contains 225 mg of caffeine per serving (the daily recommended max is 400 mg), anyone sensitive to caffeine should not consume this beverage.
Boosting the metabolism is a surefire way to lose weight. But how do you do that? Well, exercise is one, but some say so is eating spicy foods. It Works! has found a solution in ThermoFight Xˣ , a daily supplement that boosts your metabolism naturally while helping you burn existing fat. A bottle of 60 caplets (30-day supply) is $69 .
It Works! ThermoFight Xˣ uses a few powerful ingredients to help kickstart your body’s natural thermogenic activity. One is caffeine, and the other is EGCG from the proprietary green tea blend. You’ll also get the proprietary thermogenic blend that contains real foods like jalapeño, black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, and cayenne to kick your metabolism up a notch.
There aren’t any nutrition facts for ThermoFight Xˣ caplets. Mostly, they’re made from vitamin and mineral blends and extracts, along with 140 mg of calcium, 200 mg of chromium, and 125 mg of caffeine.
ThermoFight Xˣ is all about amping up your body’s natural thermogenic process. Helping you lose weight, it increases energy (by burning stored energy) and promotes ketosis (fat burn). In a clinical study, participants lost an average of 31 lbs in 90 days.
ThermoFight Xˣ works alongside your body’s natural process of thermogenesis. The process is what your body uses to burn calories it’s stored for later—something it normally happens when you eat or when you’re cold . By activating thermogenesis, you’re increasing your body’s ability to burn fat and lose weight .
It Works! recommends taking one caplet twice per day alongside your meals. It’s best to follow your caplet with a full glass of water and ensure you’re drinking at least 8 glasses of water in total throughout your day.
Two caplets contain 125 mg of caffeine , so be sure to stick to the recommended dose. Adults should not exceed 400 mg of caffeine per day.
Who thought snacking on gummies could actually help you burn and block fat? The It Works! Slimming Gummies were designed to stop excess calories in their tracks while special compounds get to work to remove and burn old fat.
Made with natural ingredients you’ve probably heard great things about—like apple cider vinegar and prebiotics—these gummies may not only help you metabolize existing fat, but they also may promise smoother digestion. Try out a bottle of 60 gummies (30-day supply) for $69 or become a Loyalty Member and pay $41 .
The Slimming Gummies use three main ingredients to help you slim down. The first is Morosil Sicilian blood orange fruit extract , which is full of fat-blockers and antioxidants. The next is apple cider vinegar to help curb your appetite and get rid of bloat, and the third is chicory root inulin , a healthy, natural fiber to support your digestive system.
Other ingredients in the formula include water, pectin, citric acid, coconut oil, paprika, and natural citrus flavor. Carnauba wax is added for heat protection, and short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides as prebiotics to support gut health.
Each serving size of 2 gummies has 10 calories, 4 grams of carbs, and just 1 gram of sugar. Made with chicory root, they also provide 3 grams of fiber, along with 500 mg of apple cider vinegar and 200 mg of blood orange fruit extract.
The It Works! Slimming Gummies are designed to help you lose weight in the areas you want to most: your hips and waist. Usually, excess fat is stored there, and the ingredients in this formula do what they do best, which is blocking and burning fat.
Preventing weight gain and burning up old fat , these caffeine-free gummies may help with lowering your weight and slimming down trouble areas.
Slimming Gummies work by a little thing called lipogenesis. This process uses the proprietary ingredients in the formula to stop fat from accumulating in your body. Think of them like you would a killer block in a game of volleyball.
Stopping excess calories from being turned into fat, the supplement instead helps your body burn that energy at the moment. And along with blocking lipogenesis , the gummies also promote lipolysis (breaking down existing fat). Working to burn up some of the fat that’s stored in your cells, it helps you become slimmer with time.
It Works! suggests taking two gummies at the same time each day. You can take them with or without food. Store the bottle between 59-86°F.
The products in this It Works! review should not be consumed by anyone under 18 years old. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medication, or have a medical condition, talk to your doctor before taking them.
It Works! offers solutions to common concerns like beauty, aging, and energy. The focus of this review was on its weight management products which are intended for adults seeking to lose excess weight and intend to take them alongside a healthy diet, regular exercise routine, and positive mindset.
It Works! brews, gummies, and capsules come with a warning for pregnant or nursing women and those with medical conditions. The best course of action before taking them is to talk to your doctor.
Though the company doesn’t list side effects in its product descriptions, we saw a few ingredients throughout the ones featured in this It Works! review we thought worth looking into. The first one is caffeine.
Too much caffeine has been linked to heart palpitations , nausea, anxiety, and digestive upset, and the elevated levels in the Skinny Brew and ThermoFight Xˣ (if taken in excess) may cause these.
ThermoFight Xˣ and Skinny Brew also contain 200 and 1,000 mg of chromium per serving, and while the mineral is generally safe for supplementation, those with renal or liver disease may experience side effects such as weight loss, anemia, and renal failure.
With a name like “It Works!,” its products kind of have to work, don’t they? The reputation of this company hangs on this, and considering its success, we already get the sense that they do. Since we’re not the type to take a company’s word (sorry, not sorry), this section of our It Works! review is dedicated to finding out the truth.
And what better way to do that than to read up on customer feedback? Since this It Works! review is tailored to the brand’s weight management products, we decided to look into the Skinny Brew to see what it’s really like.
For that, we turned to an It Works! review on a blog called Grass Fed Mama . Here’s what the post had to say about how the Skinny Brew tasted:
“ I was really blown away with how rich of a flavor the Skinny Brew coffee was. It is dairy free – which means that you can add creamer to it if you like, or if you drink your coffee black, it is perfect just as it is! ”
If you’re someone who loves coffee, then this one sounds like it makes a great replacement for your regular morning cup. Great tasting coffee means drinking it is something you may just look forward to , meaning you’ll have an easier time sticking to your new routine.
Next, we checked out the ThermoFight Xˣ weight management supplement on an It Works! review page on Influenster. 76 shoppers gave it a 3.6/5 star score that breaks down like this:
The comments were torn on this one, but the majority of folks who tried it said it worked for them . Some say it works along with diet and exercise while others say it works without them having to change anything. What’s the main thing people notice while taking it? It seems to make users feel full . One comment about this reads:
“ This product has given me more energy and definitely makes me feel fuller, sooner, ” while another user wrote, “ Curved all my sugary cravings I used to have, especially em bags or Reese’s every night!! Keeps you focused and upbeat all day. No lie, no change in diet, just up my water intake!! ”
Our last bit of feedback comes from the brand’s Trustpilot page. Take a look at the rating and its snapshot first, then we’ll dive into the comments.
There were a lot of mixed reviews on Trustpilot, but one we saw seems to sum up the experience with this brand—and all brands for that matter. It reads:
“ I’ve been taking these products off and on for more than 10 years ! I’ve tried most everything except the newer products…and I have great results so far! I know these are not “magic”… I also have to do my part of eating right and exercise to get results. Not every product is the right fit for me but some have changed my life. ”
Not every product is going to be the right fit for you. We’re all different and results do vary. When you get a brand as big as It Works! is, it’s common to see feedback that reflects the differences in customers. Overall, feedback is mid-range with some very positive experiences.
While we dug around, we came across a few It Works! reviews that report a lack of results from the brand’s products as well as missing shipments and long shipping times.
This isn’t a huge deterrent from choosing this brand (after all, bodies are different and results vary no matter what the product is), but it is something that sparked us to look a little closer at reviews to find out if this is a common experience customers have with the company.
We checked out the brand’s Better Business Bureau page and found a C+ rating and pattern of complaints from members about trouble canceling their membership. The BBB rating isn’t the worst considering how strict the organization is (we’ve seen F scores for just 1 unanswered complaint before).
As far as we can see there, It Works! has closed or resolved all of its complaints. There’s no doubt this brand is legit, but considering issues are with memberships, it may be good to test the water with a single product purchase first.
It Works! has a great selection of products that have produced results for thousands of people. When trying anything new, it’s tough to take a risk—we get it. But we’ve read some truly great stories from some customers and the fact that this brand is so big alone tells us that something must be working.
When looking at the products themselves, they’re packed with good-for-you ingredients that rival some of the most popular on the market today. Made with nootropics, adaptogens, and science-backed complexes, from a wellness angle, its products look pretty good.
Are they worth it? It really depends on you. There’s no magic pill when it comes to weight loss, but having certain supplements in your back pocket can make all the difference in your mindset and the way you stick to healthy habits.
The biggest way this brand helps its customers save is through its Loyalty Customer program. This section of our It Works! review will give you a rundown of what to expect when signing up. After you pay a one-time fee of $50 , as a member, you’ll get:
Right now, the brand has a promo running that gives new Loyalty Members an extra 50% off their purchases when they use code SAVENOW .
You can buy the brand’s products directly from ItWorks.com or through one of its many distributors. To shop via a distributor, select that option when it comes time to check out. You’ll be connected with one that’s closest to your location.
Want to squeeze in a few more orders before your Prime membership costs increase? You can find select products on Amazon as well.
While not every item it offers is free from animal-derived ingredients, the brand is cruelty-free and has a fantastic selection of vegan products. The skinny coffee, capsules, and gummies we covered in this It Works! review are part of its vegan selection.
Many of It Works!’s products are gluten-free , including the ones we reviewed here. Though they don’t contain ingredients that contain gluten, the brand does not have them tested for gluten and the substance may find its way in during the manufacturing process (ie. via shared machines used for products that do).
If you have celiac disease or an extreme reaction to gluten-containing products, It Works! may not be for you.
It Works! ships within the USA only . The brand gives you the option to shop through a distributor in your area or check out as a guest. The Bill Lawrence adaptation makes a solid case for more TV versions of Carl Hiaasen’s work, even if it falls short at times
The Florida Keys is paradise on earth. As long as you ignore the crime, the corruption, the eccentric locals and some issues involving a pet monkey in a mini diaper. After a fisherman pulls a severed arm from the water (one that’s flipping the bird), the authorities want the problem disposed of immediately. Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a detective on suspension due to an unfortunate incident involving his girlfriend’s husband, is tasked with dumping the limb. He senses that not all right is in this case, and soon he finds himself on the hunt for a possible murderer. Cue the treacherous family members, a gorgeous coroner assistant, a real estate scheme in the Caribbean, voodoo queens and, yes, one misbehaving primate.
Apple TV+’s “Bad Monkey” brings together TV maven Bill Lawrence of “Scrubs” and “Ted Lasso” fame and Carl Hiaasen, perhaps the most beloved comedy crime writer in America. The patron saint of Florida sleaze has made his name on stories of weirdos, scandals and “it could only happen here” drama in the Sunshine State. Given the popularity of his work, and its naturally cinematic qualities (fast-flying dialogue, frenetic action, memorable oddball characters), it’s somewhat surprising that we haven’t gotten more adaptations of his work.
“Bad Monkey” certainly makes a solid case for more, even if it falls a touch short of its goals.
Typically for a Hiaasen story, there are many twists and turns, all helped along by a cavalcade of memorable weirdos. There’s Bonnie Witt (Michelle Monaghan), Yancy’s ex-girlfriend with a secret past; Even Stripling (Meredith Hagner), the widow of the owner of the missing arm who doesn’t seem especially bereaved by what’s happened to her husband; and Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez), a Miami coroner who becomes Yancy’s accomplice. Across the waters in Andros, Bahamas, resides the other weary protagonist of the tale, Neville Stafford (Ronald Peet.) Having lost his beloved beach house to ruthless out-of-town developers, he’s determined to do whatever it takes to get back what is his. And what else is a man with only a pet monkey to do but acquire the services of the local spell practitioner, the Dragon Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith)? It doesn’t take long for everyone’s paths to cross in barmy fashion.
Lawrence is no stranger to a dash of cynicism in his comedy, although his best known works are those that put proud earnestness to the forefront, such as “Ted Lasso”, his Apple TV+ mega-hit. Hiaasen is not known for pulling his punches or leaning into the grotesque with his portrayals of seedy rich bullies, low-level crooks and cops with more on their mind than justice. Lawrence is mostly savvy enough to not get in the way of Hiaasen’s own language, or his oft-explored ecological concerns (the biggest punching bag of the show is a flop-sweaty real estate salesman, played by “SNL” star Alex Moffat, who is desperately trying to sell an ugly McMansion next to Yancy’s house.) It all works best when it embraces the sun-drenched noir of detective questions, shady witnesses and the general aura of bad things around every corner. If anything, “Bad Monkey” could stand to have more bad taste. Some jokes taken from the source material pull their punches in a way Hiaasen never would (Yancy’s attack on his girlfriend’s hubby is far worse in the novel, and funnier as a result.) It’s a Florida show, after all. Why not revel a little more in the state’s surrealness? At least they have the good decency to play a Jimmy Buffet song or two along the way.
On paper, Vince Vaughn is the ideal choice for a Carl Hiaasen antihero. As one of the core members of the Frat Pack, the early 2000s ragtag crew that defined mainstream American comedy cinema, Vaughn’s sardonic persona was one of the smart straight(-ish) guys of the group, halfway between sanity and madness. For the most part, he makes for a good protagonist. Yancy is a good cop who does bad things, a public mess who still has a strong moral core even as he causes havoc wherever he goes. In many ways, he’s a character you could have taken from any Vince Vaughn movie in 2006.
The issue is that the series has no idea when to rein in its star. Why tell one joke when you could make four in a row? Yancy just never stops talking and it wears thin very quickly. This is a Vaughn original since the book has Yancy keeping his quips pretty restrained. Was the star and executive producer being paid by the word? If only they’d given him and the audience some room to breathe.
A 300+ page book gets 10 episodes that are roughly an hour long each, and while some expansions to characters like Neville, Rosa and the Dragon Queen are welcome, the lag is also obvious (and it gives Vaughn even more time to fill dead air with rambling.) One wonders why Lawrence, an expert at the 30-minute comedy, didn’t tighten things up and commit to that format instead. It makes better sense for something that’s supposed to be as zippy as a Carl Hiaasen story. Instead, the expansion reveals the flaws in the narrative, akin to that very messy third season of “Ted Lasso”, which made the same mistake.
One of the bigger twists in the book is revealed rather early and you feel the air deflate the narrative as a result. Would that “Bad Monkey” have been more noir and less comedy.
“Bad Monkey” premieres Wednesday, Aug. 14, on Apple TV+.

Republicans have leveled inaccurate or misleading attacks on Mr. Walz’s response to protests in the summer of 2020, his positions on immigration and his role in the redesign of Minnesota’s flag.
By Linda Qiu
Since Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was announced as the Democratic nominee for vice president, the Trump campaign and its allies have gone on the attack.
Mr. Walz, a former teacher and football coach from Nebraska who served in the National Guard, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 and then as Minnesota’s governor in 2018. His branding of former President Donald J. Trump as “weird” this year caught on among Democrats and helped catapult him into the national spotlight and to the top of Vice President Kamala Harris’s list of potential running mates.
The Republican accusations, which include questions over his military service , seem intended at undercutting a re-energized campaign after President Biden stepped aside and Ms. Harris emerged as his replacement at the top of the ticket. Mr. Trump and his allies have criticized, sometimes inaccurately, Mr. Walz’s handling of protests in his state, his immigration policies, his comments about a ladder factory and the redesign of his state’s flag.
Here’s a fact check of some claims.
What Was Said
“Because if we remember the rioting in the summer of 2020, Tim Walz was the guy who let rioters burn down Minneapolis.” — Senator JD Vance of Ohio, the Republican nominee for vice president, during a rally on Wednesday in Philadelphia
This is exaggerated. Mr. Walz has faced criticism for not quickly activating the National Guard to quell civil unrest in Minneapolis in the summer of 2020 after the murder of George Floyd by a police officer. But claims that he did not respond at all, or that the city burned down, are hyperbolic.
Mr. Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020, and demonstrators took to the streets the next day . The protests intensified, with some vandalizing vehicles and setting fires. More than 700 state troopers and officers with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ mobile response team were deployed on May 26 to help the city’s police officers, according to a 2022 independent assessment by the state’s Department of Public Safety of the response to the unrest.

Moviegoers love "it ends with us," the film adaptation of colleen hoover's bestseller, but the cast allegedly feels differently — about each other..
"It Ends with Us," the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover 's bestseller, is in theaters now. But rumors of an alleged feud between the cast start with Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni .
The movie follows a flower shop owner named Lily Blossom Bloom (Lively), who falls in love with a dashing neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid (Baldoni) and reconnects with her stoic childhood sweetheart, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar).
Directed by Baldoni and produced by Lively, the heart-wrenching film is a largely faithful retelling of Hoover's book, grappling with the insidious nature of domestic violence and cycles of abuse across generations.

"It Ends with Us" also stars Jenny Slate , Hasan Minhaj, Isabela Ferrer and Alex Neustaedter.
While the movie marks the "Gossip Girl" alum's first starring role since 2018's "A Simple Favor," it also marks a return to rumors surrounding on-set drama for Lively as internet sleuths have been digging into her seemingly rocky relationship with Baldoni.
From oddly paired press junkets and awkward red-carpet appearances to interview snubs from the cast, here's why the movie's promotional tour has the internet up in arms.
It all started Aug. 6 at the New York City premiere of "It Ends with Us," when fans noticed there wasn't a single shot of the entire cast together.
Lively was photographed with husband Ryan Reynolds (who has joined in on the press junket run for this movie as well), fellow A-lister friend Hugh Jackman , and co-stars Jenny Slate and Brandon Sklenar.
But what stood out the most was that Baldoni only appeared on the red carpet solo and side-by-side with his wife, Emily Baldoni, and other friends and family — but never with Lively or other co-stars.
According to People magazine , Baldoni also allegedly didn't introduce the film ahead of the screening with Lively and Hoover, despite being the director and star of the film.
Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, acquired the rights to the book in 2019, and Lively's casting in "It Ends with Us" was announced in January 2023.
Amid speculation of a feud, Baldoni has employed a PR manager, highly experienced in crises, per reports. According to The Hollywood Reporter and People Magazine , Baldoni has partnered with Melissa Nathan, founder of The Agency Group PR.
Nathan previously represented Johnny Depp during his litigation with ex-wife Amber Heard.
The Agency Group lists crisis communication and management as one of their services on its website: "Drawing on our extensive experience handling high-profile crises, we possess the expertise to guide individuals and corporations through any communication challenges they may face."
USA TODAY has reached out to The Agency Group for confirmation.
Following the premiere, internet sleuths began scrutinizing the cast's social media activity and claimed that Hoover and Lively unfollowed Baldoni on Instagram.
None of the main cast members of "It Ends with Us" follow Baldoni on the social media platform, as of publication. Lively follows Sklenar, Hoover and Slate.
'It Ends with Us': Five major changes between the book and movie
Lively has promoted the film in joint interviews with co-stars Sklenar , Slate and Ferrer .
Even Lively's husband Reynolds got in on the promo action, conducting a playful interview with Sklenar , in which he pretended to crash the actor's press junket.
However, fans began to notice Baldoni was doing press for the film primarily in solo interviews, including appearances on the "Today" show, "CBS Mornings" and "Access Hollywood."
When asked about Lively on "Access Hollywood," Baldoni gushed about the "brilliance of Blake Lively" and how she informed his performance as Ryle.
"She's such a wonderful listener," Baldoni said. "So, having her as a scene partner made me better."
Fans doubled down on the cast drama rumors when Slate — who plays Lively's on-screen best friend Allysa — avoided directly answering a question about Baldoni's directing chops.
"Talk to me, what was that like — having (Justin Baldoni) be director but also scene partner?" an interviewer for Deadline asked Slate at the New York premiere.
To which Slate answered, "I mean, what an intense job? To have to do so many things." She added that she "was looking around just being like, 'I'm good with just acting, I love it.' "
And at no point did she mention Baldoni.

However, during an interview with People magazine , Sklenar opened up about working with Baldoni and said the "Jane the Virgin" actor did a "great" job balancing his duties as actor, director and producer.
"The entire crew that he ensembled was so incredible," Sklenar added. "Everybody in this film is just on the top of their game across the board. It was a really pleasant environment to work in."
At the movie's New York City premiere Aug. 6, Baldoni told Entertainment Tonight that he felt there were "better people" suited to direct the sequel to "It Ends with Us."
In October 2022, Hoover picked up where "It Ends with Us" left off and published "It Starts With Us," centering on the relationship with Lily and Atlas. It has not been confirmed whether a sequel is in the works.
"I think Blake Lively's ready to direct, that's what I think," Baldoni told ET. "This isn't my night — this is a night for all the women who we made this movie for. This is a night for Blake, this is a night for Colleen. I'm just so grateful that we're here, five years in the making."
On Aug. 8, in an interview with the "Today" show, Baldoni continued to praise his co-star, saying that while Lively is "best known as an actress" and "fashion icon," she's "so much more than that."
"She's dynamic, creative. She had her hands in every part of this production and everything she touched, she made better," Baldoni said.
In an interview published on Today.com, Baldoni said, "Every movie is a miracle. And then, of course, you're navigating complex personalities and trying to get everybody on the same page with the same vision. And mistakes are always made, and then you figure out how to move past them."
He added he approached leading the adaptation of Hoover's 2016 novel from a collaborative place. "I'm a 'best idea wins' person," Baldoni said, "and I always have been, to a fault."
The actor said at times he felt as though people on set wondered "if I know what I'm doing or if I have a point of view because I'm so willing to have my vision changed.
"You don't have to listen to everybody and that didn't happen all the time," he said, "but there were just moments where I would get out of the way too much."
In an interview with Elle UK published Aug. 9, Baldoni addressed "friction" on the set of "It Ends with Us": "As a filmmaker, you’re always navigating personalities."
"There are all these things that happen every day on set, there's always friction that happens when you make a movie like this. Then at the end of the day, it's that friction, I believe, that creates the beautiful art," he told Elle.
"Everything in life needs friction to grow," he continued. "And look, we created something so beautiful and so magical, and it was hard, and it was worth it at the same time."
While Baldoni served as director and producer of "It Ends with Us," it's Reynolds who Lively has praised for his creative contributions.
"The iconic rooftop scene, my husband actually wrote it," Lively revealed to E! News . "Nobody knows that but you now."
"We help each other," she added. "He works on everything I do. I work on everything he does. So his wins, his celebrations are mine and mine are his. I mean, he's all over this film."
The film's screenwriter, Christy Hall, told People magazine she wasn't aware Reynolds had any part in writing that scene .
"There were a couple of little things that I thought had been improvised. Like when he says, 'Pretty please with a cherry on top,' and she talks about the maraschino cherries. When I saw a cut, I was like, 'Oh, that's cute. That must have been a cute improvised thing.' So if I'm being told that Ryan wrote that, then great, how wonderful," Hall said.
While the film adaptation of "It Ends with Us" doesn't shy away from tackling the book's unflinching portrayal of domestic violence, many fans have taken issue with the lighthearted tone of the film's marketing.
"Just so you know, if you haven’t read It Ends with Us, it’s not a romcom," @vnesswiftie wrote on X. "Don’t grab your girls and florals. Know that it’s about domestic violence and there are some triggering scenes. This promo of this movie is pissing me off."
Another X user compared the film's marketing to the campaign for psychological thriller "Don't Worry Darling."
"It Ends with Us promo and Don’t Worry Darling promo ignoring the gender-based violence central to their plots and just not treating it with any care whatsoever," @SNOOPYSD0GHOUSE wrote. "I need this brand of 'feminist' movies to die."
"Having watched It Ends with Us, I’m now quite confused why the promo was giving romcom instead of pushing a message encouraging women in those situations," X user @AlllDaye wrote.
On Tuesday, Aug. 13, Lively addressed the film's domestic violence on her Instagram stories in a pair of posts. "It Ends With Us is a story of the female experience," she wrote in the first Story. "All the highest highs, and lowest lows. And we are so proud of it.
"We have been in celebration of this film and of getting a message so important out there to the masses."
In the next story, she shared statistics that highlight the prevalence of intimate partner violence and provided ways to reach the National Domestic Violence Hotline .
"Everyone deserves relationships free from domestic violence," Lively wrote.
