FIR review: Vishnu Vishal’s film is a taut thriller with smart twists
Fir review: vishnu vishal pushes boundaries both as an actor and producer with fir. the film offers him ample scope to flex his acting chops..
It is rarely do you see movies being made in Tamil cinema with a Muslim protagonist. Debut filmmaker Manu Anand’s largely engrossing thriller FIR delves deep in the way we perceive people based on their ethnicity. What is instantly likeable about the film is that it doesn’t try to preach why it’s wrong to judge people based on their religion. Instead, it makes us empathise with the anguish of the film’s lead character who is a proud Indian.
Vishnu Vishal plays Irfan Ahmed, a chemical engineer from IIT Madras, who works in a small firm but has big dreams. For quite some time, he has been attending interviews to land a dream job. The one question which haunts him everywhere he goes is – Are you religious? Irfan stays with his mother who works with the police. He has a close set of friends, a girlfriend, who lives in another city.
As we follow the life of Irfan Ahmed, we are also introduced to a parallel story of an investigative agency being on the lookout for a dreaded terrorist named Abubakar Abdullah, who is apparently planning a massive terror attack. Gautham Menon heads the agency and he’s closely working with a team to nab Abubakar Abdullah before he could wreak havoc. When Irfan accidentally gets caught in the mission to capture Abdullah, his life tuns upside down.
FIR, coming from a first time writer-director, packs a solid punch. Not only it manages to keep the screenplay racy, but it also stays consistently gripping, even with over a dozen key characters. Unlike most Tamil films, FIR is not hero-centric and that’s what makes it refreshingly different. It’s one of those films in which every character plays a vital part and holds the film together. Manu Anand’s understanding of how investigative agencies work in India is very impressive. The terrorism angle as a backdrop is another key aspect of the film which is seldom explored in Tamil cinema. To do it with finesse and without going overboard in the treatment makes FIR one of the better commercial films in this space.
Vishnu Vishal continues to back and pick films that push him out of his comfort zone. After scoring a huge hit with the psycho killer thriller Ratsasan (now being remade in Hindi with Akshay Kumar as Mission Cinderella), he pushes boundaries both as an actor and producer with FIR. The film offers him ample scope to flex his acting chops. As someone desperate to prove his loyalty towards his country and his innocence, the actor delivers a very sincere performance.

One of the highlights of the movie is its female characters and how they’ve been used effectively. Raiza Wilson, Reba Monica John and Manjima Mohan have solid parts to play with each one of them getting at least one scene where they leave their mark. Raiza's portrayal of a Muslim intelligence agent is particularly interesting. Filmmaker Gautham Menon, whose recent good stint as an actor, continues with FIR, in which he plays the chief of the intelligence agency - a character that fits him like a glove. Composer Aswath helps in elevating the tension of the story with his pulsating background score.
FIR has some smart, well-written twists for a thriller. As the twists untangle themselves in the end, the film feels more complete.

‘FIR’ movie review: Vishnu Vishal stars in a fast-paced, taut thriller
Director manu anand also showcases how we perceive certain people and why we do it.

A still from ‘FIR’
Triplicane, or Thiruvallikeni, is among the most interesting neighbourhoods in Chennai. Full of small lanes and bustling roads, the area is famous for two important religious institutions: the Big Mosque, and the Parthasarathy Temple.

They are both significant worship places for the Muslim and Hindu community in the city.
It is in Triplicane that actor Vishnu Vishal’s latest, FIR, begins. Irfan Ahmed, a gold medalist in Chemistry from IIT, works in a small firm, but is looking out for offers. He keeps attending job interviews, which invariably end up with the question: Are you religious? His mother works with the police, and his tryst with the police station is limited to the time he brings food for his mother. He has a group of friends, a girlfriend who is in a different city, and is the quintessential Chennai youngster you would meet on the road.
He is Muslim and proud of that. This could be a rather small detail in a person’s life, but when he is caught in what is perceived to be a big terror threat to the city, what happens?
Director Manu Anand’s FIR delves deep into the working of investigative agencies, which are on the lookout for a man, Aboobucker Abdullah, who poses a threat to the peace of the nation. So, who is Aboobucker Abdullah and what is his connection with the protagonist, Irfan?
- Director: Manu Anand
- Cast: Vishnu Vishal, Gautham Menon, Manjima Mohan, Raiza Wilson
- Storyline: A chemical engineer gets connected with an act of terrorism. Can he come out of it?
FIR ’s strength and weakness are somehow the same thing: its speed. With multiple cities like Chennai, Bangalore and Kochi being showcased within a few minutes, this racy script might be a little tough to follow for people who are used to gentler, slower films. Various characters get introduced, and before you can register them, the film moves on to another character, another location. But the speed keeps the viewer interested, which could well work in its favour in the theatres, which are finding it hard to draw audiences who are used to consuming content in the comfort of their homes on OTT platforms.
Vishnu Vishal has certainly grown as an actor in recent times. Post the thrilling Ratsasan , which was a wonderful theatrical experience in 2018, he seems to have become a lot more serious about the craft of cinema. As Irfan, he delivers a sincere performance; one that successfully conveys the flutter between ambition and anguish.
Gautham Menon gets a role that requires more presence than nuance, and he does the job. To the director’s credit, he also tries to showcase three female characters (played by Manjima Mohan, Raiza Wilson and Reba Monica John)… that they get at least one solid scene each augurs well for the film. How they all come together in their own ways in the final explanation, is among the highlights of the film.
Also helping them are the technical department; Prasanna GK’s editing, Arul Vincent’s cinematography and composer Ashwath’s score, all upping the tension on screen. Despite being a thriller, FIR also manages to throw in some powerful moments, but could have done well to avoid some unnecessary over the-top elements that seem to dilute its core premise in the first place.
FIR is currently running in theatres

FIR Movie Review: A punchy thriller that gets watered down by convenient writing
Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).
There's a lot to like about Vishnu Vishal's FIR . It is one more effective film that reminds us that the system is always greater than the people it serves and we aren't safe even if we have a gold medal from IIT or a family member in the police force. And the odds are always stacked against us if we are from the minority. The Muslim community, which has either been overlooked or suffocated with an overdose of cliches in Tamil cinema gets a breather in FIR .
Cast: Vishnu Vishal, Raiza Wilson, Manjima Mohan, Reba Monica John, Praveen Kumar, Ram C Director: Manu Anand Rating:2.5/5
Excluding one highly controvertible Islam preacher's character, the film gets its representation right. For starters, the protagonist Irfan Ahmed lives in Triplicane, the religious hub for both Muslims and Hindus in Chennai. He is a religious Muslim, who prays five times a day and is a teetotaler, but takes his leeway when it comes to smoking. Blemishes like this humanise Irfan, and I also loved the effort that has gone into the character sketch of the two major supporting characters, Prarthana Raman and Anisha Qureshi. Looking macroscopically, having a brahmin and Muslim girl on opposing ends might feel like tokenism, but Prarthana and Anisha aren't caricatures. Raiza Wilson's Anisha will be remembered as the first hijab-clad action hero of Tamil cinema.
Debutant Manu Anand sets the bar so high with a lot of interesting elements like these that when inconveniences come in the form of forced comedy and loopholes it almost feels criminal. I would hate to analyse a film based on the pre and post-intermission halves, but in FIR , the difference is so jarring that you can't help yourself from missing the highly tactful writing of the first half in the latter. If you have seen the release promos of FIR , it is no surprise that it is the tale of a chemical engineer who gets framed for terrorism. The tension Manu Anand sets till the point Irfan gets arrested is so tastefully made that it keeps you on the edge of the seat.
However, the shockingly convenient writing that follows takes a toll on our investment till then. Which secret agent on a mission goes by their original name? Which police van transporting the country's most wanted criminal goes unescorted? Which good guy, who stands for what's right, ends up aiding a major catastrophe? Of course, there are the proverbial twists that bank heavily on 'the one, big climactic reveal'. But, the reveal, which should have been bang on target, misses it by quite a distance, and the clutters in the pre-climax is plain predictable. FIR in a way gave me a feeling of an exam sheet of a bright student, who spent all his energy and time in giving the most exquisite and detailed answers for the essays but went with random options for the MCQs in a rush to finish the exam. These inconsistencies in the screenplay, however, don't hinder the performances of the lead actors. Vishnu Vishal, who was highly pumped up for FIR , had called it his career-best performance during the promotions. Well, he turns out to be right as he brilliantly fits the part and conveniently ticks the check box of an action hero. Raiza impresses in a highly unconventional role. With two stunning performances in both of her major releases so far, it’s going to be interesting to see where she goes from here. Nevertheless, FIR is an important film because it doesn't question or explain why Anisha wears a hijab to work. It is an important film because it doesn't question or explain why an Irfan falls in love with an Archana Krishnamoorthy or befriends a Prarthana Raman. Most of us would have had this question on our mind for long: "Where are our Muslim protagonists?" The void for Muslim leads is finally being filled by Khaliqs and Irfans now. But it is undoubtedly scarring to realise that we as a society are still making them scream, "We are not terrorists!" Hopefully, one fine day we will get to see our Wizams and Mohammads dancing to intro songs, cracking jokes and taking on evil kingpins, just like our Karthiks and Shivas.

FIR movie review: Vishnu Vishal, Raiza Wilson and Reba Monica John shine in this fast-paced thriller
The movie is an engaging fare, thanks to fast-paced screenplay and effective performances from its actors. But not all its twists and turns are convincing

Story: An extraordinary talented, but unemployed chemical engineering graduate, is accused of being the mastermind behind bomb blasts which rocked the cities of Colombo and Hyderabad. The National Security Agency believes that he is planning more attacks in India, especially in Tamil Nadu. They also strongly suspect him to be Abu Bakkar Abdullah, the most wanted terrorist in the country. However, the youngster denies his association with terrorist groups and claims to be innocent. Will he be set free by the investigative officers?
Review: Manu Anand's FIR touches upon a sensitive subject which also is quite relevant in today's times. The movie's plot revolves around Irfan Ahmed (Vishnu Vishal), an unemployed chemical engineering graduate who lives with his mother Parveena Begum (Maala Parvathy), who works as a cop.
One day, Irfan, who joins as an employee under Perumal (RNR Manohar), a successful entrepreneur who runs a chemical business, travels to Hyderabad as part of his work. Meanwhile, Ajay Dhewan (Gautham Menon), the head of National Security Agency and his team are busy trying to learn the plans of Abu Bakkar Abdullah, a dreaded terrorist who is planning attacks in Colombo and India.
However, they fail to stop the attacks in Colombo. They are hell-bent on stopping the terrorists from executing more attacks in India, especially in Tamil Nadu. Anisha Qureshi (Riza Wilson) and Gunasekar (Praveen Kumar), who are also part of the investigate team, put their best foot forward while tracking movements of suspected people in Chennai.
Irfan, who is about to board a flight from Hyderabad to Chennai, loses his phone at the airport, after which he gets into a heated debate with the officials there. A slip of tongue lands him in trouble and he is questioned by the NSA team to know if he has any connection with terror groups.
Few minutes into the interrogation, a blast outside the airport takes the life of 10 innocent people. This puts Irfan on the spot; more evidences against him leads to his arrest, though he keeps denying any links with the blast.
Prarthana (Manjima Mohan), who appears as Irfan's lawyer, too, starts suspecting him after a point despite lending support to him initially. Who is Irfan? Is he the real Abu Bakkar Abdullah who the NSA is after?
The film stresses on the trauma which Muslim community in our society often undergoes. The repeated questioning of 'are u religious' during job interviews often upsets Irfan which make him realize that he doesn't enjoy the perks enjoyed by other communities in the country.
The suspicion with which others look at him whenever he does something unusual makes him uncomfortable though he has experienced in several times. The movie has appropriately portrayed the struggles of someone who has been framed just because he belongs to a particular community. The dialogue 'criminals are not born, they are made by the system' uttered by Irfan at a crucial point in the story pretty much reflects various loopholes in our law system.
Vishnu Vishal is effortless playing terror accused Irfan who is torn between protecting his unwell mother and proving his innocence. He excels in action sequences and emotional scenes as well. Maala Parvathy as the doting mother is aptly cast. The three female leads have been written interestingly.
Raiza as the aggressive and taut NSA officer Anisha does her part quite convincingly, while Manjima as lawyer Prarthana has a few notable scenes to perform. The director presents Reba Monica John's character, Archana, as Irfan's love interest, with ample suspense attached to it. Just when you think her character is another typical heroine which makes a blink-and-miss appearance, a twist appears which offers her more to do in the story. With subtle expressions and a stiff body language, Gautham as the NSA head, is convincing.
FIR has more such twists in the latter half, but some of them aren't convincing. When you wonder how Irfan is going to come out of solid evidence-based accusations, the director chooses to offer twists and turns which are hard to digest for everyone. They are delivered back-to-back and too unbelievably cinematic, to say the least.
Even with suspension of disbelief, you might find it a little difficult to come to terms with the rushed up ending and character arc provided to the protagonist in the third act. The climax setting reminds you of the similarity it shares with the climax of the first season of The Family Man.
Nevertheless, FIR is an engaging fare, thanks to Arul Vincent's visuals, fast-paced screenplay, effective background score by Ashwath and action scenes by Stunt Silva.
Verdict: The crime thriller has ample thrilling moments supported by an abled technical team and impressive performances from its actors.

FIR Movie Review (2022)
Vishnu vishal's fir tamil movie review - film directed by manu anand.
FIR Movie Cast & Crew
Vishnu Vishal, one of the most promising actors in Tamil cinema is back in the game with his next outing, FIR, directed by debutant Manu Anand. The film has Gautham Vasudev Menon, Raiza Wilson, Manjima Mohan, Reba Monica John, and others in pivotal roles.
STORY: Can a name change the life of a man upside down? Yes, says FIR. The film follows the story of Irfan Ahmed (Vishnu Vishal), a Chemical Engineer, who is falsely accused of being an ISIS terrorist named Abu Bakkar Abdullah, responsible for executing fatal terrorist attacks in Colombo and Hyderabad. Since Irfan Ahmed is a Muslim, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrive at a decision that he is the terrorist that they have been searching for. Is Irfan Ahmed a terrorist indeed? Or is he an innocent youth? If so, how does he prove his genuineness? The film answers these questions.
SCREENPLAY, DIALOGUES & DIRECTION: Debut director Manu Anand presents a film that is stylish and racy for the most part with an engaging screenplay. Manu gradually builds the tension in an organic fashion and so when Irfan Ahmed gets arrested by the NIA and Police, we feel the pressure. The sequence of events that lead to the arrest of Irfan is effectively shot and put together, and there are many such scenes that keep you engaged. The writing is definitely good, especially the dialogues. The lines that highlight the problems faced by Muslims are noteworthy and they are sure to be related by the masses. FIR has an important message that is effectively showcased and is one of the promising takeaways of the movie.
On the flip side, the revelation scenes towards the end lack credibility, and it kind of raises a question about the necessity of the police brutality that we saw earlier in the film. If the reasoning part was convincingly written and pulled off, it would've made the film look complete. As a result of which, we begin to question the logic behind several scenes. The second half feels rushed and we are made to process a lot of information in a short span of time. The mother sentiment angle also doesn't really strike a chord. The romantic moments with Reba Monica look to be an unnecessary diversion when the film is progressing at a brisk pace with its core premise.
Despite all these shortcomings, FIR is a racy action thriller that holds your attention for the most part because of its highly engaging screenplay.
CAST: Vishnu Vishal pulls off a highly impressive performance showcasing the emotions in an impactful manner. He is earnest in the role of Irfan Ahmed and scores well in the action scenes as well, fitting the bill neatly. Gautham Vasudev Menon is given a stylish outlook and his performance is apt for the role. Among the three leads, Raiza Wilson stands out with a striking performance, putting up a confident front. Manjima Mohan is equally good in a neatly written role, while Reba is fine. The rest of the cast doesn't really lend solid support and some of the performances look artificial.
TECHNICAL: Ashwath's background music is dynamic, adding to the tension and thus elevating the impact of several scenes. The songs are passable. Arul Vincent's cinematography gives a stylish perspective to the film and he does commendable work. GK Prasanna's fast-paced cuts aid the director's vision effectively. Due credits to stunt choreographer Stunt Silva for the raw and intense action sequences.
SO? In a nutshell, FIR can be termed as an engaging action drama that carries an important message.
Verdict Despite some misses, FIR is a racy action thriller that holds our attention for the most part!

FIR MOVIE REVIEW
FIR is a film written and directed by Manu Anand, and produced by Vishnu Vishal under the banner Vishnu Vishal Studioz. It has Vishnu Vishal playing the lead role, while Abishek George, Gautham Menon Reba Monica John, Manjima Mohan, Raiza Wilson, Gaurav Narayanan, Prashanth Rangaswamy and others in important roles.
Vishnu Vishal plays the role of Irrfan Ahmed, a gold medallist in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras. He attends various job interviews, but is denied work because of his religion. So he starts working in a friend's chemical factory. He becomes a victim of circumstances, and is arrested by the National Intelligence Agency as a terror suspect. How he manages to come out of this, and the consequences he faces forms the rest of the plot.
First things first, FIR is a sensitively written film, that walks the tightrope really well, because any misstep in the writing would have led to the film stereotyping Muslims as terrorists - something the film actually intends to speak against. It would be a crime to put a box on director Manu Anand's writing and call it just 'sensitive', it is also clever at a lot of places with a lot of twists.
Such writing can only translate well on screen if there is clarity of thought, and a sense of what the film wants to achieve. And Manu has gotten it right in his debut film itself. Vishnu Vishal shows a lot of maturity in his portrayal of Irrfan Ahmed.
Even though the female actors have very few scenes, all 3 - Raiza, Manjima and Reba Monica's characters have agency and the performances are on point as well. Among the other cast, theatre artist Abishek George nails his performance, and Gautham Menon has an authoritative screen presence.
As a hacker, Prashanth Rangaswamy's characterization could have been done better. In an otherwise serious film, his character alone sticks out and dilutes the intensity of scenes. For instance, every character from the NIA is seriously looking for Irrfan Ahmed, while this character is designed casually.
With a runtime of 2 hours and 10 minutes, the film has lags at very few places, but predictable scenes occur regularly. However the scenes that surprise us are solid and effective in nature. The editing by GK Prasanna is slick and crisp and complements the director's writing well. It is also one of the reasons why the film majorly works. Ashwath's pulsating score is also extremely effective and becomes a backbone of the film.
Overall, the film has solid writing, and is technically strong in terms of music and editing. The visuals could have been a bit better, with nothing extraordinary. The few scenes that dilute the film's intensity could have been treated more seriously to give us a far better product. But that doesn't mean FIR is not engaging. It had the potential to be a top notch film, but decided to stay content with a 'good film tag.

FIR Review: Fast-paced Thriller
Movie: FIR Rating: 2.75/5 Banner: VV Studioz and Abhishek Pictures Cast: Vishnu Vishal, Manjima Mohan, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Reba Monica John, Raiza Wilson, Vignesh Vijayan Music: Ashwath DOP: Arul Vincent Editor: Prasanna GK Director: Manu Anand Release Date: Feb 11, 2022
“FIR” is a Telugu dubbed version of a Tamil movie of the same name. The film stars Vishnu Vishal, a well-known Tamil star and husband of Gutta Jwala.
Actor Ravi Teja presenting the film in Telugu has created curiosity.
Story: Irfan Ahmed is a chemical engineer from IIT. He lives in Vizag. He fails to get a job due to his name (Muslim identity) despite attending many interviews in the last three years.
He is frustrated for not getting a job worth his educational qualification. His mother is a police constable. Irfan Ahmed works in a local pharmaceutical company to earn some money.
One day he heads to Hyderabad to check pharmaceutical orders his company placed. As he is returning to Vizag, he loses his mobile at the airport.
Around the same time, a bomb blast happens in the parking lot of the airport. Suspecting his behavior, the National Intelligence Agency sets surveillance on him. The NIA team thinks he might be Abu Bakkar, the most-wanted terrorist.
Eventually, they take him into custody despite Irfan pleading innocence. Is Irfan really a terrorist? Or a victim of false investigation?
Artistes’ Performances: Vishnu Vishal plays the role of Irfan with so much sincerity. His convincing portrayal makes us get involved. Reba Monica John is a surprise package.
Manjima Mohan as a lawyer is okay. Gautham Vasudev Menon fits well in the role of National Security Advisor.
Technical Excellence: The film has an able effort from the technical team – cinematographer, action director, editor, and music director. The fast-paced editing and background score are the major highlights.
Highlights: The twist Vishnu Vishal’s acting Technical output
Drawback: The lawyer’s thread Mother sentiment scenes
Analysis If you have seen web dramas “The Family Man” or “Person of Interest”, you would easily enjoy this thriller “FIR”, which also offers many riveting moments.
The title “FIR” doesn’t stand for ‘First Information Report’, but for three Muslim names. The film’s protagonist is a Muslim. He faces suspicion from everyone in his day-to-day life due to his religious identity.
He also gets arrested for a simple mistake at the airport. But the film is not about a Muslim man questioning the system that stereotypes their religion.
“FIR” is a taut patriotic thriller that focuses on how national investigative agencies hunt terrorists and avert possible attacks.
The film also looks into how agencies do surveillance and sit on a case for many months and years tracking the activities of the suspects.
“FIR” is narrated in a fast-paced manner by moving the story from Vizag to Hyderabad and Colombo. Even the romantic thread is short.
It completely focuses on officers tracking down the activities of the terrorists and hero Vishnu Vishal is one of the suspects. His thread with lawyer Manjima Mohan doesn’t work much.
The film has its share of issues, like talking about many points at the same time, but everything culminates well in the end. The final twist changes the entire mood. At one time, we feel the film is going downhill, but the twist suffices everything.
If you are ready to watch a thriller that doesn’t fall into the commercial format, this will work for you. A neat thriller!
Bottom line: Taut and racy

FIR Review: Spurious messaging pushes stereotypical images of Muslims
Spoilers ahead
In this movie, the IAF, yes, the Indian Air Force, bombs Ambattur Industrial Estate. You read that right. Keep reading for an argument on why despite what FIR might seem at a passing glance, it applies the same Hindu-nationalist yardstick to measure how bad, or good or Indian enough a Muslim living in this country can be.
FIR starring Vishnu Vishal is marketed as a thriller. It’s essentially a supposedly ‘thrilling’ take on how Indian Muslims, good or bad, are damned either way. In the film, the National Investigative Agency (NIA) headed by Gautham Vasudev Menon is on the hunt for a faceless Islamic State operative in Chennai. This operative, Abubakar Abdullah, releases videos of himself in a mask rambling on about reigning down violence. In the meantime, Vishnu Vishal who plays Irfan, a “good” Muslim and IIT-Madras chemical engineering graduate just wants to find his dream job, but his religion stands in the way. He is ‘a proud Indian Muslim’ until the fateful day he is implicated as Abubakar and arrested.
Vishnu Vishal tries to put on a convincing performance of a man whom the world is unfairly closing in on, swinging between calm resignation, frail optimism and outbursts of fury. Yet, the film’s intentions to truly portray the lives of Indian Muslims in times of heightened Islamophobia appear spurious.
Instead, it sets an ultimatum for them to abide by. For debutant director Manu Anand it would seem Indian Muslims must exist within a strict binary. They are either embedded deeply within the state apparatus, the very same that is used to prey on Muslim communtities in real life or they are violent terrorists; zealots with no regard for human life. To escape oppression, they must become oppressor themselves.
A character embodying this notion is Anisha Qureshi (Razia Wilson). Wilson’s uneven performance as a harsh, no-nonsense hijab-wearing NIA agent does not come off as a gesture of inclusivity. Not once, but twice, she hungrily participates in the extended custodial torture of characters. Her excuse is her hyper-nationalism and that “terrorists [like Abdullah] are giving all Muslims a bad name.” Replicating, and internalising the violence of an anti-Muslim state isn’t exactly a progressive stance. The fate of Muslim characters in the film begs the question to the director, and to others in Tamil cinema in particular. Are there no narratives beyond the one where Muslims have to be either ultra-patriotic martyrs or murderous terrorists?
Read: Either 'good man' or terrorist but hardly the hero: The Muslim characters of Tamil cinema
If there are any doubts regarding the film pushing this Hindu-nationalist agenda, look no further than GVM’s character and the treatment he gets, apart from his grating portrayal of a sharp-suited MIB rip-off. He’s a NIA head named Anish and plays chess regularly with the Prime Minister. He is seated close to power, portrayed here as benign and simply concerned about a looming terror threat, at least until they decide to drop an actual missile on part of Chennai city. Menon gets to live unscathed, monologuing unimpressively in a lift by the end of the movie.
Do Razia Wilson or Reba Monica John (as Irfan’s old college flame, Archana) have meatier roles than those reserved for female leads in most Tamil films? Yes. And Reba Monica John more or less delivers on screen what’s expected of her. Unfortunately, it’s hard to be wholeheartedly welcoming of the change in female characterising. The two women are reflections of the biases implicit in the film. Archana’s climax-sequence big reveal only shows her off as mercilessly brutal as everyone else.
It’s hard to watch a film so stereotype-enabling and try to think about how the music worked, how the cinematography plays out and such. They all work well-enough, fitting quite smoothly into the packaging of the film as a ‘tense thriller’ to the point. In the crescendo of racey music, you are likely to forget you are just being indoctrinated.

FIR Movie Review: A Clumsy Film That Takes Its ‘Message’ Too Seriously
Cast : Vishnu Vishal, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Manjima Mohan
Director: Manu Anand
When I started writing all those years ago, I used to live under the delusion that I was a gifted writer. I'd have an idea, write up a few words and send them to a friend proudly. Her response always was, "Ranjani, this needs another three drafts." I thought about it a lot while watching Manu Anand's FIR starring Vishnu Vishal , Gautham Vasudev Menon, Manjima Mohan and others.
FIR is the story of Irfan Ahmed (Vishnu Vishal), an Indian Muslim suspected of being a terrorist mastermind. Writer-director Manu Anand takes the safe route to this story — a hero intro song, friends, mother sentiment, college romance and so on. Almost as if he suddenly realised he's better than that, he moves on to the 'message' part of the film. In the draft that the film is made from, this shift is not only jarring, but also appears half-hearted.
To be fair, FIR undoubtedly tries. Writers Manu Anand and Divyanka Anand Shankar populate the world with some level of diversity — a Tamil man who doesn't speak English or Hindi, a Muslim woman who leads a mission, a female lawyer who stands up for herself, and so on. They show us that they're not entirely blind to their biases.
Yet, FIR is only as good as the (apparently) non-Muslim writers it's written by. The Muslim identity is reduced to namaz, biriyani and being discriminated against. This comes through in two distinctly superficial ways. One is dialogue. Hindus regularly say bigoted things like "are you religious?" or "no wonder, he made a bomb threat." Irfan, Anisha and other Muslim characters repeatedly talk about the discrimination, sometimes offering impassioned lectures.
But more damagingly, the bigotry is assigned to individuals. FIR pretends that the widespread attack against the community is not a deliberate effort by the political powers of today, but the responsibility of unthinking individuals. So much so that there is a Modi lookalike as the Prime Minister, who is not subjected to any scrutiny at all. In this, FIR fails the cause it takes up. It forces its Muslim characters to go out of their way to be exceptional Indians, placing the burden on them to be cleaner than clean, many of whom also die in the process. So, FIR ends up celebrating Muslim martyrdom instead of condemning Hindu bigotry.
If we can look past the good intentions of the message though, FIR is a clumsy film. The track with Prashanth (itisprashanth) is ridiculous. It takes away from the seriousness of what's going on without offering even a semblance of comic relief. I don't know who this track was written for, but it's a terrible misfire.
The twists don't work in the moment, and are long forgotten by the end of the film when they're explained. With another 2-3 drafts, FIR could have been an extraordinary film, leaving crumbs, having us guessing, theorising and engaging more deeply with its text. But the way it is, FIR is just things haphazardly thrown about.
Vishnu Vishal does his darndest best, playing the range from a vulnerable victim to a grieving son to a dreaded terrorist. Gautham Menon does what Gautham Menon does — he is very comfortable as the English-speaking, coat suit-wearing, suave national security advisor. If you're so inclined, there is also an extended voiceover at the end, summarising the film, with some inanities about patriotism. Raiza Wilson gets enough screen time, but her role is reduced to pulling a gun and flashing it awkwardly.
The biggest let down is that the antagonist makes no impact. The casting, performances, writing — nothing tells us anything substantial. When finally the dreaded terrorist is revealed, it's damp. And then the explanation for why the film is called FIR is almost like school kids playing FLAMES.
This is not to say that FIR is a bad film, it isn't. It is just happy to be mediocre. It is the kind of film that doesn't want to try hard enough to be great. And that's a shame.

If the first half leaves us with a rush, the second half feels rushed. The film, which until then seemed quite rooted in reality, begins to suddenly veer into over-the-top territory with scenes that make us question their plausibility. There’s also a bit of mother sentiment that feels tonally off from the rest of the film (just like the scenes involving a hacker, played by Prashanth). We do get a twist that sort of explains some of Irfan’s actions, but it also gives rise to a different set of questions. As a result, the climax, with shades of The Family Man and Vishwaroopam, doesn’t feel as nail-biting as it should have been.Thankfully, the rapid editing (GK Prasanna) and the pulsating background score (by Ashwath) ensure that the film manages to move at a breakneck pace, and manage to stop us from thinking about logic and help the film keep us engaged.

FIRs strength and weakness are somehow the same thing: its speed.

FIR review: Vishnu Vishal in a still from the movie. (YouTube) Vishnu Vishal plays Irfan Ahmed, a chemical engineer from IIT Madras, who works in a small firm but has big dreams.
Post the thrilling Ratsasan , which was a wonderful theatrical experience in 2018, he seems to have become a lot more serious about the craft of cinema. As Irfan, he delivers a sincere performance ...
It is rare to see a Muslim hero in a Tamil movie. And director Manu Anand's FIR is one of those rare movies. It's a good thing. But, if only good intentions could make great movies, a bad movie would become a rarity. The main theme of this spy thriller, starring Vishnu Vishal in the lead role, is the rampant prevalence of islamophobia.
FIR Movie Review: A punchy thriller that gets watered down by convenient writing. FIR is like an exam sheet of a bright student, who spent all his energy giving detailed answers for the essays but went with random options for MCQs in a rush to finish the exam. There's a lot to like about Vishnu Vishal's FIR. It is one more effective film that ...
FIR: Directed by Manu Anand. With Vishnu Vishal, Manjima Mohan, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Reba Monica John. Irfan, an innocent man with an ordinary life, is portrayed as the evil incarnated by media trials. Is there a journey back to normal life for a man accused of terrorism? Is there more to Irfan than what meets the eye?
Review: Manu Anand's FIR touches upon a sensitive subject which also is quite relevant in today's times. The movie's plot revolves around Irfan Ahmed (Vishnu Vishal), an unemployed chemical engineering graduate who lives with his mother Parveena Begum (Maala Parvathy), who works as a cop.
Its all because your name is "Irfan Ahmed". Tamil movie #FIR is a decent thriller, with good performances by Vishnu Vishal, Manjima Mohan and Raiza Wilson. Running time should be reduced by 15 minutes. Rating 3/5. 18 out of 28 found this helpful.

FIR Tamil Movie Review (Faizal Ibrahim Rais) Ratings:3/5 Review By: M Suganth Site:Times Of India. If the first half leaves us with a rush, the second half feels rushed. The film, which until then seemed quite rooted in reality, begins to suddenly veer into over-the-top territory with scenes that make us question their plausibility.
