Although most computer programs have the grammar and spell check, they are not dependable; as they can’t differentiate between homonyms and often suggest corrections that are not correct due to which children make mistakes.

Another negative impact of computers is when a person’s interest in computers becomes an obsession. Everyone knows that we can shop online, even study online, keep record and organize information and can entertain ourselves with endless games or music/movies. However, it is still very important to have a life outside of the cyber world as it is not real life. Suppose computers become the central point of an individual’s life. In that case, their behaviour changes, such as they become lazy and develop anti-social.

Individuals who share all their personal information online like names, address are hampering their safety as their information can easily get stolen. As our dependence on computer increases, our comfort level with computer increases too. Most businesses are unable to run without using computers nowadays, and along with the development of a country, computers have become must in an individual’s life. Car rentals, movie rentals, banking, along with credit apps all is now done with computers.

Our world will remain standstill with a screeching halt if we lose the use of computers. The stock market will crash, credit machines and gas pumps will go down too. All of these proves that we are way too dependent on computers which can become an extreme risk to the way all businesses and lives are running.

Although modern societies and developed countries are heavily dependent on computers, the survival of the human race is not dependent on computers. So, there is no possibility to live without computers nowadays, but one should also find ways to make the dependence on technology less harmful for individuals.

Introduction

Humankind has entered the age where computers do everything from taxes to math problems even sending emails to family members, many people have gotten to the point where their entire lives are governed by computers or the function of computers; the biggest aspect of this is children being born in the digital age and are being raised on computers or how to use them in non-ideal ways. Although computers are responsible for making life easier for people across the world, it has been noted that people have grown too dependent on computers to do what they used to do ten, fifteen or twenty years ago such as teaching a lecture in class, using computers to teach someone how to cook as well as provide gaming recreation. Another aspect of this is people use computers to check different accounts online, it has gotten to the point where people do not even have to leave their homes; computers are used these days to order food online and have it delivered to the home. It can be argued that using computers to perform these tasks are a necessary evil in order for society to keep functioning and the people in it do not get left behind on the times, the computer age has done wonders for society especially for children who are homeschooled. This overdependence on computers have come to rule people’s lives, so the question here is, are we too dependent on computers, the answer is an emphatic, yes!

Too dependent Argument #1

People’s overdependence on computers have reached an all-time high, education is an example of this. Children get bullied at school and principals as well as other education professionals would quell the unrest by disciplining the bully and giving them a time out. Nowadays, people are homeschooling their children through computer technology; the child does not have to leave the house to go school. Parents can just walk a few feet to their computer, type in a username and password; the child can go to school on their computer. This option has made parents who are afraid of their child getting bullied fear for their children’s future less while ensuring that their child is getting the education that is expected of them. Carr states, “that computers have practically made humans seem obsolete, they are doing everything from homeschooling children to allowing professional gamblers to gamble without going to a casino” (Carr, 2015). People have grown to overly dependent on computers to do the jobs that people should be doing themselves, gaming systems is another example of this. On a typical gaming system, people were only restricted to playing video games only. Video game consoles in the present day has given people the power and accessibility of being able to go on Facebook, check their bank accounts etc. Skinner reports, “That laptops in the classroom have made it so children do not have to directly pay attention to the teachers, the computer is their teacher, the educator” (Skinner, 100, 1997).

Another aspect of this argument of being too dependent on computers is recreation time or how free time is spent, an example of this is using video game consoles such as the PS3 and PS4 to send messages over the internet so they do not have to leave the house. Skinner reports, “people’s overdependence on computers have caused their children to adopt a lazy streak that keeps them from being responsible” (Skinner, 103, 2012). People are buying these gaming systems that can do everything for their children, people have gotten to the point where they do not have to go to a currency exchange or even their bank to cash their paycheck; it is all done electronically. Skinner states, “people’s overdependence on their computers will be an adjustment that they will not be able to do without, people have grown too dependent on their computers to do everything even manage money and anything else that they need to do” (Skinner, 104, 2012). Computers have also given people the ability to work from home so they do not have to leave their house to make money, people have become too overly dependent on this because of the lack of employment opportunities, but also technology has made computers the overlords of society where people cannot function without their computer. Skinner reports, “Obesity has skyrocketed tremendously due to people’s lack of physical activity and their dependence on their computer, computers have become the ruin of the future not to mention of children (Skinner, 105, 2012). There were times when parents used to encourage their children to go play outside, parents now have to unplug or show the power off in the house in order to get their children outside; this overdependence on computers has terribly affected the world’s children as well. People do not even have conversations, it is all done on the computer.

Computers have made it so people can do things that might have seemed necessary before such as dating, computers have made it so people can look for a partner online instead of going out to places to meet people. Waldrops argues, “Computers are making exercise a thing of the past, people finding other people through causal meetings is done on the computer through false dating profiles” (Waldrop, 14, 1993). People’s need for companionship has been completely eradicated due to the fact that computers can now be used to keep people at a distance. Waldrops reports, “home computers used to be purchased by parents for their home use, they are now buying it for their children to play video games on which is a waste of technology” (Waldrop, 14, 1993). Computers have made it so people get where they are going via GPS, a computer navigational machine used to guide people to places. Waldrop states, “Small computer machines such as iPods have made people dependent on it by allowing people to sync their music to it instead of going to an opera or a music festival like the old days” (Waldrop, 14, 1993). Computers guide children’s learning process, math and science projects were the epitome of greatness during childhood; teachers were able to teach children through those projects. Nowadays, computers rule and guide children’s learning. Waldrop reports, “More and more children are becoming dependent on computers to teach them everything and there is no going back” (Waldrop, 14, 1993). In conclusion, people have come to be too dependent on computers because it has become known as the easy way of living life without ever leaving home or hiding within the safety of the home. Waldrops states, “Computers have made life easier, but it has also robbed society of its ability to do for themselves as they once did” (Waldrop, 14, 1993).

Humanity has come a long way from learning how to make a fire to building skyscrapers and metropolises. With constant progress and development, we are afraid to look back in time to barely recognize the way former generations lived. Technology and computer science have become an integral part of our everyday life. We use information technology products to memorize, calculate, create, edit, analyze data, and entertain ourselves. A significant part of the population is concerned about computers’ incorporation and the trust level we are giving to them. The worry is fueled by the scale of losses from machines’ errors and malfunctioning. Nevertheless, people will always be reliant on computers that are a consequent outcome of technology’s development and bring a positive impact on humans’ lives.

Machinery products simplify our actions, help us achieve new goals, and save human resources. With computers, individuals can be fast, efficient, and productive during everyday activities. Machines do not have a human factor causing a variety of errors. Lack of sleep, overworking, multiple decision-making distracts peoples’ minds from the actual task. Computers do not possess any emotions and feelings, that is why they are more precise in calculations, assessments, and planning. Whilst saving time humans spend on counting numbers, for instance, they can use it for creation, self-development, and education. We can apply our resources to more productive directions and bring a positive impact on the future life.

Relying on technologies is inalienable as humans cannot exist detachedly creating everything by themselves. Throughout history, we were dependent on animals, weather, nature, cultural beliefs, and other people in the commune. Creating interconnections, sharing experiences, making families is major as it satisfies our social needs and helps us survive. Furthermore, with technological progress, people are more likely to trust computers more than humans.

According to the study by Farjam (2019), humans preferred depending on outcomes based on computers’ decision-making rather than other individuals irrespective of the well-known result. Such penchants might have several motives: suspicion of humans’ betrayal, their emotional involvement, perception of machines as more predictable and precise. We can merely speculate what leads humans to such choices, but the data results present the conclusions. People prefer dependence on machines over humans, and we have to accept that reliance because it is vital for us.

Some can claim computers spread vulgar language and addiction to electronic games which cannot be assessed as positive effects. However, it is unreasonable to blame PCs for their negative influence as people are the ones taking responsibility for their creation. Humans should integrate computers rationally: utilizing machines for entertainment must be limited as all other non-computer types of amusement.

Consuming alcohol and neurostimulators also cause problems damaging individuals’ health, inducing addiction and early deaths. Children that do not know limits on playing videogames, spreaders of inappropriate and vulgar materials via the Internet, shenanigans in databases are all made by us. There are clear solutions such as putting more attention to children’s upbringing, limiting cites with potential adult content, protecting systems containing important data with various tools. Controlling negative outcomes from machines can bring us sensible computer usage.

Hence, PCs are integrated into every corner of our being, and we should perceive them as consequent positive results of progress. Computers give individuals the possibility to be even more efficient, productive, and creative. Rejecting dependence on technology is unreasonable as we must rely on something, and research shows that we choose to give out trust to machines rather than to people. The influence of technologies can be harmful; however, it comes from our inappropriate control. Setting limits and protecting data can help reduce the negative impacts of gadgets and lead to better outcomes using them.

Technology, of course, has many innumerable benefits. But this dependency on phones and computers has impacted humans negatively, too.

First and foremost, it has led users to be completely engrossed in their devices. In fact, there is even a term to describe this: “nomophobia” (no-mobile-phone-phobia) which is when a person has an actual fear of losing or being away from their phone.

Fact #2: According to Trendhunter , 66% of the population suffers from nomophobia today.

What Are The Effects Of Technology?

What does this addiction to technology do to us? Well, even if we are not addicted, technology can have an impact on our mental, physical, and emotional health and wellbeing. From causing stiff necks to heightened anxiety, technology has seeped through all aspects of our lives. And, if not used moderately, technology can really harm us, despite all its benefits — ultimately, by making us too dependent on it.

The Effects Of Technology On Entertainment

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were many ways that people could be entertained, which usually involved interacting with others without a device between them. For instance, people could attend dances, live events, amusement parks, or simply play a game of stickball with their friends from the neighborhood.

Though we still do these activities for entertainment, it’s much less so than before. The way we entertain ourselves these days has changed dramatically since phones, computers, and similar technologies have been interwoven into our lives.

Fact #3: The type of entertainment we get from technology today is known as “passive” entertainment. This could be anything from binge-watching a show on Netflix to listening to a podcast. It does not require much effort. Passive entertainment, or passive leisure, is different from active entertainment or active leisure, which involves the exertion of physical or mental energy.

Technology has had an effect on how we communicate. Back in the day, people had to communicate primarily by talking to each other in person. Over time, technology gave us the unique ability to communicate with people who were far away from us, whether it was by making a phone call, sending an email, or shooting off a text.

Now, with a click of a button, we can talk to anyone in the world, any time of day — albeit with a few exceptions (being in a place without Internet or phone service). This may be good in theory, but the basic principles of healthy communication have been broken down. Think about it: has someone ever dumped you via a text message?

There’s no denying the fact that technology has made it easy for us to talk to our friends instantaneously. But, at the same time, many of us have forgotten how to interact with others without the devices between us. Or, they are able to use the device as a cover-up.

Technology has strongly impacted the way we travel. Today, we are able to find where we are going much more efficiently. This started with inventions like trains, automobiles, and planes. And, centuries later, we have taken this light years further by utilizing the internet and phone apps to make travel easier and more accessible.

Fact #5: In 2019, more than 37 million Americans traveled overseas . In 2002, less than twenty years prior, that number was 23 million. There’s no question that this can be largely attributed to advancements in technology, making travel more affordable and accessible.

However, this has brought humans further away from our hunter-gatherer roots; most of us would have a hard time surviving or even getting around in a foreign place without access to technology. Technology makes it easier for people to travel who otherwise wouldn’t feel confident doing so, but there’s no denying that it’s made us have more dependence on technology.

A long time ago, people would get their information by doing the research themselves, usually with the help of books, a librarian, interviewing experts, or conducting experiments themselves. This could be a rather long process, and you may never come across the answer you’re looking for.

Nowadays, you can quickly type the question you have into a search engine and find your answer. Yet, there is a downside. With the easy access to information, there’s often a lot of misinformation out there, too. Some of it isn’t even written by humans.

There’s nothing wrong with using technology to make life easier and more convenient. It’s when we become too dependent on it that we need to take a step back and re-evaluate our reliance on technology.

If you’re wondering whether or not you’re too dependent on technology, ask yourself if these statements apply to your life:

• Nothing can be done without Internet access. If you lose Internet access, you’re done working for the day.
• You lose track of time when you’re online.
• You use calculators for simple calculations.
• You feel anxious without connection.
• You are addicted to your mobile phone and/or you allow machines to dictate your responses/behaviors.
• You feel buyer’s remorse everytime you buy a new device and/or you obsess over the latest gadgets.
• You have a hard time disconnecting and focusing on the present. You find you’re not living in the present and often record moments instead of appreciating them.
• You don’t have phone numbers and/or addresses memorized.
• You find it difficult to sleep.
• You don’t go out enough; socialization takes place on your phone.
• You haven’t been creative in a while.
• You’re not able to have important and serious conversations in person.
• It’s been a while since you’ve shopped at a brick-and-mortar store.
• You feel like something’s missing when you don’t have your phone.
• You have little concern for your privacy.

Most of us probably will have answered “yes” to at least a few of these statements. But, if you’ve answered yes to a majority of them, then it may be time to start addressing your reliance on technology.

If you think you are too dependent on technology but wondering why technology is bad for society, well, this dependence can be dangerous. Technology can impact us physically, mentally, and emotionally if we are not careful. It can also be harmful to others. Here’s how.

1. Anxiety And Depression

Technology dependence has been linked to anxiety and depression . Whether this comes from the fact that we are withdrawn from others, the pressures from social media , the rise of cyber bullying, or the bright phone screen that is detrimental to our sleep, all of this is taking a toll on our mental health .

Fact #7: According to a study by the University of Missouri , “We found that if Facebook users experience envy of the activities and lifestyles of their friends on Facebook, they are much more likely to report feelings of depression,” said Margaret Duffy, a professor and chair of strategic communication.

2. Impatience

Technology has made us much more impatient than ever before. Because people can be available and accessible at all times, this has led us to believe that people should be accessible and available at all times. Most of us may get frustrated when someone does not answer their phone right away, or if we see that someone has seen a message but has not yet responded. For many, many years, hearing back from someone could take a long time; it was the norm.

Another way that our dependence on technology is dangerous is because it can impact our memory and the happy emotions that come with memory. Since technology has given us the ability to use memory cards on a device to store our information, we have not been accessing our brain’s memory as much as we are capable of doing.

Fact #8: A scientific article entitled “ The Brain In Your Pocket ” states that “Across three studies, we find that those who think more intuitively and less analytically when given reasoning problems were more likely to rely on their smartphones (i.e., extended mind) for information in their everyday lives.”

Technology has increased the rate of technological addiction, which is characterized as the uncontrollable urge to constantly and consistently use technological devices or the programs, apps, and platforms that come with them. Technological addiction is more common among teenagers, but children and adults are seeing the effects as well.

Fact #9: According to the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation , “Researchers have found evidence that people who overuse technology may develop similar brain chemistry and neural patterning to those who are addicted to substances.” This can cause or worsen anxiety, depression, and even play a role in suicide in extreme cases.

Technology gives us the opportunity to learn new skills no matter where we are located. People can start businesses from scratch that run entirely online. However, this quick access to skills can present the same problem as with memorization. Because we turn to our devices for a particular skill-set (for instance, using a water intake app instead of knowing how much water we should be drinking on our own), it can impact our natural skill attainment abilities.

Are We Too Dependent On Computers?

Computers are now the essense of the lives of modern day generation. There are so many reasons to why we would be so absorbed in the functions of computers. Isn't it unbelievable that almost forty years ago there were many people who had never seen a computer before? In the present century, there are computers at almost every corner in the world. There are computers at malls and offices, almost every house in this city (Hong Kong, China). If it is not a personal computer, it is a video game system or a laptop computer. There are even cell phones with the capabilities of a computer! A computer program can perform almost any task that requires a speck of brain power. For example, executing informative information or data, handling data, and operating file systems or production factors (especially flow and automative production in the business industry). Computers enable us to work faster than ever, more efficiently and do jobs that previously must be done by employing people to do.

The main question now lies in whether we are all too dependent on computers. Whether we are adults, teenagers, elderlies or even children, everyone seem to be almost obsessed with or so indulged in the functions modern day technology provides us with that it is becoming a culture the new generation is bringing. Should this change? How much more evidence is needed except to know that most people spend atleast 48% of their time on a screen and that, yes, we are addicted?

Many people spend their time on the computer because it is informative, a good way to interact with others, useful in many ways, environmental (depending on how you view this), and we can save time completing complicated tasks in a short time. Instead of leaving the apartment to go for a walk or a jog at the park, contributing in communities in the reality, or community services, we sit at our desk typing away. Which is 1. Extremely unhealthy, this may cause various eating disorders to happen and or diseases because of the environment we are engrossed in; 2. Can lead to the malfunction of body reactions due to the lack of face-to-face interaction with others and many more problems.

Students especially depend on their computers for projects. Most articles debating whether we are too depend on computer are held by students on the internet. Students say that they do feel they are too dependent on computers at time when it comes to their projects and fear it may be a disadvantage in the near future.

Is it? A poll conducted in January 2004 by more than 2000 voters around the world claim that the majority, with 1002 votes, believe they are a 'computer geek/nerd'. Due to the language used, this poll was most likkely conducted by the younger generation – teenagers, if not young adults. Due to the time gap between 2009 and 2004 - the year the poll was conducted, I would proudly pressume that there would be an increase in the number of voters voting that they are addicted to the computer whether it is for work or entertainment purposes.

While others indulge themselves in entertainment or school work purposes, adults or the older generation would use the computer for conducting business objectives (research, conducting a plan etc.), organizing data files or even to interact with the society. If the technology sector of an organisation, no matter if the industry is medical, business, media or education, fails, the entire sector would be frozen to a stand-still until the system recovers. The scare of an enormous computer crash in 1999 as a result of the year changing to 2000 should be evidence that most people who use computers and most businesses do not have enough independence from computers.

In a recent discussion thread conducted in January 2009, debaters discuss the issues of computer dependence. Of the seven posters participated in the discussion, all felt they are addicted to the computer. Because they spend so much time on the computer, simple daily activities for example keeping the house clean etc are left behind due to the amount of activities one can do on the internet and computer. These activities include banking, shopping, keeping in touch with friends, checking the stock market & news, discussing topics, checking the email, looking for vehicles and prices, paying bills and many, many more. The above simply entitles a small section of the world of technology and some debaters are beginning to wonder what the world would look like away from the technology the 21 st  century brings.

Now, because of the older generation's influence, the younger generation particularly have seized on the extraordinary communication possibilities of the Internet. Even elementary school children have been taught to use computers to perform school work for later reference and to adapt to the modern world society – researching homework support material on the internet, producing printed packages for essays, reports of some sort, and most seem to be overjoyed to know that the younger generation is able to use almost professionally this undeniably useful and modern technology.

For what? We teach the younger generation to use the computer because we live in the era of e-mail and video-conferencing. Are we creating a new form of culture that can only be expressed through technological means? Are we willing to sacrifice the nature of the world for more developed convience to ourselves? The media is full of stories of romantic possibilities of the Internet and again the younger generation have not been slow in exploiting its potential. We ask ourselves, do we really need this? Is this truly helpful to us as fellow human beings?

We  know that despite its' wonderous ability the World Wide Web can do, it may have pitfalls for the unwary; we also know that computers can be the new factor to create a better safer environment reducing the use of trees for paper on essay writing or letters. In conclusion after the above discussion, I conclude that, yes, the new generation is too dependent on computers. Not only because there are more evidence to my opinion than it helps the environment, but it is because this is becoming a general fact in society that we have depended on technology for over a century and most are still debating whether we, human beings, are conducting the right actions for our environment after light-bulbs, fossil fuels, and plastic. Would we be creating more havoc by depending on technology even further?

Abstract A great number of specialists agree to the fact that while technology improves, people become more dependent on it, which is the case of the computer. Having a computer and the knowledge to use it has a lot of advantages but also disadvantages. The use of the computer makes many things easy; you can find whatever you want on it, and this is very helpful for everybody. Just as these advantages, computers also have disadvantages. The disadvantages include: damages to health, learning skills, and sociability. With the use of computer people have quit doing things that they used to enjoy, or the thing they need to do.

Are we too dependent on computers? If you remember how everything was ten years ago, you would realize that we have been getting very dependent on computers. We used to research on books, magazines or newspapers, and we used to read what we were researching about. With the internet most of us do not worry about researches since we just need no write a keyword and we would have what we want. Another thing why we are becoming dependent on computers is because we can communicate through it. Technology has been improving throughout years, and that is the reason why we become dependent of it. Extreme computer use damages the sight. As Natalio Izquierdo stated, “By working long hours using a computer, a compilation of systemic and ocular symptoms may develop.” (para. 1). The light of the computer burns the retina and that makes the quality of sight decrease.

One article (“Computer VDU’s & Eye Damage,” 2012) states that London Hazards Centre investigation says that 71 to 90 percent of the people that stare in front of a computer screen, more than six hours per day, suffer from eye issues (para. 4). Excessive computer use also causes headaches, general fatigue, and poor performance. These last three are most common on people who do not have the enough knowledge to use it without problem. Long time in computer alters the biological clock. Susan; a close friend, used to spend long time in front of a computer and she noticed that something weird was happening. Susan lost the time notion; hence the biological clock loses the control, for her the days seems shorter than the day before. Once she understood what was happening, she looked for a solution. It was harder for her to adapt to her normal routine. Also computers have made people lazy in the active way. Most children struggled with obesity because they do not have active lives (exercise) because they prefer to be in the computer chatting or playing. One of the most important things is exercise since it prevents some diseases and because of the computers many people do not do it.

Also muscular pain, poor blood circulation, and even joint issues are other consequences of been in a computer for long time. According to Hupston (2011): Back, neck, and shoulder pain is the natural result of prolonged sitting at work behind a computer, as is bad posture. This can cause headaches and excessive tension in neck, shoulders, arms, forearms, wrists, back, hips, thighs and legs. The result is increased fatigue to the muscles and ligaments supporting the lower back and this can eventually lead to tissue injury and spinal joint dysfunction. (para. 1). Sitting for long periods of time increases the possibility to have poor blood circulation. This happens because we tire or debilitate a muscle called psoas. The effect of damaging that muscles not only affects that, but also depletes vital energy and affects organ functions and the immune system. Moreover, excessive computer use affects general relationships. People stop interacting with other people. This is another problem, people need to interact with others, and this issue is most common in children and teenagers. Children and teenager are becoming “masters of computers” but they are losing the ability of interacting. Subrahmanyam, Kraut, Greenfield, and Gross (2011) have found that “teenagers are more likely to help parents with computers than parents are to help their children” (para. 1). Ten years ago the “normal” thing was the other way, parents helping their children. In the work of Subrahmanyam et al. (2011), “the lack of interaction with peers might be hindered in the development of interpersonal skills.” (para. 2). This means that people who does not interact may loss that ability. This problem is as big that Andrew McKillican (2000) compared living without computer to living without the industrial revolution. (para. 1). That comparison means that we really are dependent or addicted to computer. We can help each other to stop this. As mentioned at UT Dallas webpage (2011, Jan. 19), some signs that can help us to know if we are too much dependent/addicted are: unsuccessful efforts lose track of time, anxiety, neglect friends, and of course, excessive use of the computer (para. 5). People have to be conscious about this issue. Computer’ dependency affects everyone, from children to adults. We as adults must be the first to create awareness, that way we can help others. If someone is not one of those who spend a lot of hours in front of the computer, that one can star helping others. Some ways to help those who are computer’ dependents are: being a good role model, introducing them to other people, getting them involved, and talking with them to encourage them to reflect. Let’s start helping each other to quit to this addiction called, computer.

Computers were invented years ago, and due to their ability to be able to perform various tasks, they have been highly put to use by human beings. Computers make life easier and due to this they have increasingly been put to use and easily found their way into the lives of people. There are various reasons that led to computers being put to maximum use by people. This is because they enable people to do their work while at home, people are able to socialize with those they have never met, and also contact friends and relatives who are living far. As humans continue to use computers, they get addicted to them, and are unable to lead lives without computers. This is because their whole lives depend and revolve around computers. This article will focus on the importance of computers and see whether we are too dependent on them.

The world of today depends heavily on computers and this dependence has both positive and negative impacts. Computers have many benefits, but these benefits also come with negative effects. Various arguments have risen against computers and researchers claim that computers are having negative effects on children. Computers make life simpler; people are able to chat with others online, shop online, and even play games. All these activities can lead to obsession if a person is not careful. The cyber world is not a real world, it is important for people to associate more with the real world than the cyber world. Children should not be allowed to spend all day on their computers playing computer games. Instead, they should be sent outside and play with other children. This will help reduce or prevent computer obsession.

Apart from obsession, other things that arise due to too much use of computers are laziness, obesity, and strained eyes. Children who are used to computers would not want to participate in any other activity because they do not find it interesting. They may end up being obese because they spend all their free time indoors and on their computers. Strained eyes is another disadvantage of too much computer use. People who overuse the computer have difficulties with seeing letters; they have to strain their eyes in order to see. This may lead to visual impairment if too much use of computers is not stopped.

The issue that should be put into consideration when it comes to the use of computers is the safety of personal information. It is good to share information through computers, but there is no guarantee that the information is safe. This personal information includes addresses, full names, phone numbers and other personal details. Too much dependence on computers has led to people being comfortable, and trust that their information is safe in the computers.

Almost everywhere in the world people use computers; the use of smart-cards is computerized, traffic lights are computerized, bank doors, manufacturing companies have robots that are run by computers. When these computers or the internet fail, it means everything will come to a standstill. Over reliance on computers has led to the smallest thing that can be performed without a computer has been computerized.

The United States of America is one of the nations that have almost everything running by the help of computers; from homes to public places, from public places to the security of the country. The military depends on computers to detect threats from external forces, and they use these computers to curb the threats. What may happen if all the computers fail? It means everything in America will come to a standstill and the nation will be vulnerable to attacks.

Conclusively, computers are very important in the lives of humans, but it is essential to reduce over dependence. People should try and reduce the overuse of computers because despite them making life easier, they have as many disadvantages as advantages. It might be difficult for people to note that they are too much dependent on computers, but with time they realized that it is quite dangerous.

Like an addict in denial, some 21 st -century folks are trying so hard to prove that they are not dependent on computers. It is a difficult position to defend because computers pervade 21 st -century societies. Computers are no longer limited to desktops and laptops. The basic definition of a computer covers gadgets that use a microchip. This means that a tablet and a smartphone are examples of a computer. With an expanded view of computers, it is easy to say that we are too dependent on them. We are too dependent on computers because it is used for knowledge acquisition, building relationships, and the acquisition of wealth.

Those who disagree with the proposition that we are too dependent on computers utilize a defense similar to an alcoholic in denial. An alcoholic ingests alcoholic drinks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But when confronted with the problem, he will deny that he has a problem. He will argue he can stop drinking anytime he wants. The same rhetoric can be heard from someone who is addicted to Facebook or computer games. The same line of reasoning can be expected from a businessman who works during weekends using a laptop and smartphone. The same lie can be heard from a housewife who is addicted to online shopping. Overdependence on computers is perceived as a weakness. Therefore, there is a need for a cover-up. Overdependence on computers carries with it the same stigma as alcoholism and drug addiction. This explains the need to overcome our dependence on computers. This also explains the need to deny that a problem exists. However, there is no amount of denial that can erase the problem.

There are those who argue that computers are necessary tools, however, they believe that human beings can live without them. Their argument is based on the knowledge that human beings are adaptable. In a time of natural disaster or war, humans have demonstrated their ability to make the necessary changes to survive the challenges that are before them. Victims of natural disasters have demonstrated their ability to survive and thrive even in the absence of electricity. Those who adhere to this mindset attempts to set aside a few days a week where they do not use any type of computer gadget. However, they have not demonstrated total independence from their need to use computers. Those who are working in an environment that requires constant use of computers have imposed some sort of “fasting” and deny themselves the right to use computers. For example, they can develop a system wherein they are able to spend the weekends without touching a single computer gadget. It is through this process that they are able to demonstrate that they can live without the use of computers. It is a defiant stance against the tyranny of computers in their lives. However, the non-usage of computers is limited only on the weekends. Thus, it is not a convincing proof that they kicked the habit goodbye.

There are three major reasons why 21 st -century folks have become too dependent on computers. First of all, a computer is a primary component of a phenomenon called social media networking. Computers, such as laptops, desktops, tablets, and smartphones, are needed to access the World-Wide-Web. People access the Web for several reasons, but the most frequent excuse for using the Internet is to access social media networking sites. Computers are primary tools in the modern way of establishing and nurturing relationships. People are social beings, and therefore, it is hard to resist the use of a mechanism that enhances their ability to communicate and strengthen their relationship with friends and loved ones.

Social media networking sites allow for the establishment of long-distance relationships. At the same time, it is a viable tool in the creation of virtual communities in a fast-paced world. Human beings are not only desperate for relationships; they are also desperate for communities. People need communities as a source of guidance and support in times of need. Communities are needed to establish certain identities. Communities provide meaning to individual lives. However, it is difficult to build traditional communities when people are living far apart. It is impossible to build communities when people are always busy. The solution to their problem is the creation of virtual communities using social media platforms.

The secondary reason for the overdependence on computers is the need for knowledge acquisition. Google and other search engine websites are important tools when it comes to the rapid acquisition of knowledge. Human beings thirst for knowledge in the same way that an African antelope desperately seeks water in a dry land. People are willing to build libraries to enhance the knowledge acquisition process. Hundreds of millions of books had been printed to satisfy this desire for knowledge. Colleges and universities were established because of the desire for more information. The Internet provides the same satisfaction. However, there is a big difference. The Internet delivers information at the speed of light. In other words, there is no need to visit the library. There is no need to peruse several books in order to acquire the needed information. Before the Age of Computers, readers usually require the metacognition of scholars in order to find the answers to their questions. For example, they need to develop a certain skill in order to find a book that will yield the answer regarding the boiling point of water. In the present time, search engines like Google will provide the answer in a click of a button.

Finally, the third reason for overdependence on computers is due to wealth acquisition and the need to buy goods. Computers have become the primary tools in wealth acquisition. 21 st -century bankers are unable to function without computers. Stockbrokers need computers to buy and sell stocks. Businessmen are dependent on computers because of management requirements. They also need computers when they venture into e-commerce. Gone are the days when financial information is recorded on paper. Financial information is now secured using electronic copies. It is easier to create redundant copies of financial information as compared to copying data through the use of ink and paper. But aside from the acquisition of wealth, computers are needed to purchase goods and services. In the past, people are dependent on telephone lines to call storeowners and order the products and services that they needed for their home or their business. In the present time, shoppers can acquire goods and services wherever they are. There is no need to wait until they get home. Smartphones and tablets enable them to access online stores wherever they are. The ability to purchase items using mobile gadgets is a convenient option. They will never revert back to the old way of shopping for the things that they desperately needed.

Those who believe that they are not overly dependent on computers have failed to demonstrate that they can go through an entire year without using computers. In reality, they cannot even go through a single week without using computers. This assertion is true, especially after the definition of computers had been expanded to include tablets and smartphones. There are three major reasons why 21 st -century folks are unable to live without computers. First, they need computers to establish and nurture relationships. Second, they need computers for efficient knowledge acquisition. Third, they need computers to acquire wealth and to acquire goods and services. Computers made life easier for businessmen, investors, scholars, and ordinary folks. There is no going back to the time when people are not too dependent on computers.

You can also relax on computer by playing games, show video or do what you want...Beside computers can also help you save important documents, it will help you find information faster... Australian students are increasingly taking tests on computers . This includes major tests used to check national progress on literacy and numeracy.

The idea is this prepares students “for the future”, because “technology is everywhere”.

But as our two recent studies suggest, the way students respond to test questions on computers may not be the same as on paper.

This is a particular issue amid concern over the latest round of NAPLAN results , which appear to show too many Australian students are not learning basic skills in English and maths. NAPLAN (for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9) has been fully online for two years.

Our research

In our recent study , we reviewed 43 studies comparing tests on computer and paper. This included research from 18 different countries (including Australia, the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom). Fourteen of these studies focused on school-aged children.

In general, the studies showed for younger school students (who had less computer skills), test scores tended to be higher when done on paper. This effect dropped off as students got older.

We also found when it came to computer testing, scores were worst when students needed to answer complex questions involving multiple steps.

This is due to the demands placed on working memory (the part of your thinking that allows you to hold onto multiple pieces of information at one time – for example, a list of names and coffee orders). When working memory has too many pieces of information at once, we experience “high cognitive load”.

Students may experience this if they are unfamiliar with using a particular computer or particular program, testing platform or browser.

Students may also experience high cognitive load when the questions they answer become more complex. Not only are they working out the answer, but they are working out how to use the computer (or reminding themselves how to use it) at the same time.

Comparing students on paper and on a computer

We also saw this phenomenon at work in our own 2023 study , even when students were well into high school and familiar with the computers used in a science test.

We compared the differences in test scores for computer and paper-based tests with Year 9 students. This study involved 263 science students from two schools in Perth, where students learn using their own devices. Within this sample, there were 14 individual classes taught by seven different teachers.

Students completed one test on their own computer and another (featuring very similar questions) on paper. We categorised the questions in each test as “easy” or “hard”.

When students answered easy questions, they achieved higher scores (by about 7%) on the computer-based assessment. When students completed hard questions, they performed better (by about 12%) on paper-based assessment.

This suggests the computer mode adds to the cognitive load students experience when answering questions. This is a bit like the way a computer’s memory might become overloaded if you run too many programs at the same time, and it slows down and doesn’t perform as well.

This finding is similar to that of a 2018 study that looked at the verbal skills of a group of children aged between four and 11.

What about working memory capacity?

In our study on Year 9 students, we also tested students’ working memory capacity, by giving them increasingly long lists of numbers to remember.

We then controlled for this using statistics. This allowed us to compare the computer and paper test scores while assuming all students had the same working memory capacity. Under these conditions, we found there was no difference in test scores between paper and computer.

This suggests students with lower working memory capacities are most disadvantaged by computer-based tests. People with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are one group that particularly struggle with working memory . We know there will typically be one or two students per classroom who have ADHD.

What can we do differently?

Computers of course have an important role to play in education, and are powerful learning tools. But our research shows taking a test on a computer is not the same as taking the same test on paper. Schools should consider:

giving students extra working time when completing complex tasks or tests on a computer

teaching students word processing skills from an early age to increase their ability to type and navigate computer programs

minimising any digital distractions , either during tests or during class work. This includes pop-ups, multiple tabs and online games.

Additionally, families should think about providing everday opportunities at home for younger children to learn to type (such as emails, messages and shopping lists). This will help to build their skills and confidence with keyboards and computers.
